Philadelphia Porter Martone balances NHL jump as Philadelphia Flyers consider development plans
Porter Martone (via Getty Images) Philadelphia Flyers prospect Porter Martone is already making legitimate NHL noise before even inking his initial pro contract. The 2025 first-round pick is regarded as the most NHL-ready forward from this year's draft class and recently earned top-level experience by suiting up for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship. Now, the Philadelphia Flyers and Porter Martone must figure out the ideal route forward—how to balance long-term growth with a potential NHL debut this fall. Philadelphia Flyers and Porter Martone have important decision on 2025-26 development trajectory Only 18 years old, Porter Martone has opportunities that others can only imagine. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound right-shot winger ran roughshod over the Ontario Hockey League with 98 points in 57 games a season ago for the Brampton Steelheads. With size, ability, and prototype instincts, it's not a question of whether Porter Martone will make it to the NHL—it's when. "For me, my mindset is to make the NHL next year. If management feels otherwise, that's when I'll talk to my agent. I want to play a full NHL season next year. When you come into camp, you have to earn it," Porter Martone said during the Flyers' recent development camp. That confidence is mutually held by the Flyers' brass. 7/6 Development Camp: Porter Martone General manager Daniel Briere and assistant GM Brent Flahr both have no issue with the notion of Martone reaching the NHL roster through training camp, but they're equally concerned with doing what's best for his long-term development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Upgrade in Marion Read More Undo 'He wants to play in the NHL, and that's a discussion we'll have with his agent. As much as we want him to play, we have to make sure we do what's best for him. We'll figure that out in the coming weeks and see what he wants to do, and go from there,' Flahr said. Martone is presently unsigned, leaving open the possibility of several developmental paths. Accepting a one-year entry-level contract (ELC) with the Flyers would offer an immediate signing bonus and enable Martone to attend both Rookie Camp and full NHL training camp. He could play up to nine regular-season games without using up a year of his ELC. With his combination of size, scoring sense, and high level of competitiveness in tight spaces, Martone is ready to be a difference-maker at the next level. The only question now is when—and how—he does it. All will be watching this decision in the weeks ahead. Philadelphia Flyers' 18-year-old prospect Jett Luchanko battles through brutal season to chase NHL roster spot
Photo by Andy Devlin/NHLI via Getty Images At just 18 years old, Philadelphia Flyers center prospect Jett Luchanko is already carving out a reputation for his poise, speed, and maturity beyond his years. Born August 21, 2006, he's only weeks older than fellow Canadian Porter Martone, whose late-October birthday pushed his NHL draft eligibility back a year. Despite the quirk of a cutoff date shaping their paths, Luchanko's journey through the 2024–25 season has been a masterclass in handling challenges at every level—from making the Flyers' opening-night roster to battling through a demanding OHL campaign and Calder Cup playoff grind. Now, as summer turns to training camp, he's determined to prove he belongs in the NHL for good. From early NHL debut to OHL struggles and AHL playoffs , Jett Luchanko's relentless rise has Philadelphia Flyers fans watching his every move Jett Luchanko's 2024–25 campaign was anything but straightforward. When the season opened, he was in the Flyers ' NHL lineup, playing four games before being reassigned to the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League. The move wasn't a setback so much as a test of adaptability on a struggling junior team that failed to make the playoffs. Despite the adversity, Luchanko tallied 56 points in 46 games, including 21 goals—improving on the previous year's goal total even with 18 fewer games. His year didn't stop there. He also suited up for Canada at the World Junior Championship, showcasing his two-way acumen on the international stage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Преносими лазерни заваръчни пистолети, 50% отстъпка LYH Купете сега Undo By season's end, he was back with the Flyers' AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley, contributing three assists in nine regular-season games and six assists over seven playoff contests. His final Calder Cup playoff shift delivered a slick assist, even as the Phantoms bowed out to the Hershey Bears. Speaking to media on July 5 at Development Camp, Luchanko reflected on those diverse experiences: 'It was definitely a good experience for me overall,' he said. 'I got to see a lot of different players, coaches and teams. It was great, especially to end up back in Lehigh with some familiar faces in the organization and play some meaningful playoff hockey.' Yet the wear-and-tear of such a marathon season took its toll. A minor injury kept him off the ice at Development Camp in July. 'It sucks not to be able to go out there but I'm just doing what's best for me right now,' he told reporters at the Flyers' facility. 'I don't think it'll be an issue at all coming forward.' Flyers staff have noted his mature 200-foot game, natural playmaking, and world-class skating speed. But they've also encouraged him to shoot more. He's aware of it himself, admitting during the playoffs that mixing in more shots is a focus. What's next for Jett Luchanko as he fights to make the Philadelphia Flyers' NHL roster this fall What's next for Luchanko? First up is Hockey Canada's World Junior Summer Showcase, where he and Martone are expected to feature prominently. After that, the real target is September: his second Flyers training camp and a chance to show day in and day out that he's ready for the NHL grind. As he put it after Game Four in the Hershey series: 'Obviously, that's my goal to get back to the NHL and earn a spot with the Flyers. For me, I think consistency is the key. ' If the past year is any indication, Jett Luchanko has all the tools—and the mindset—to seize that opportunity when it comes. Could Anton Frondell fall to Philadelphia Flyers in 2025 NHL Draft?
As the 2025 NHL Draft approaches, the Philadelphia Flyers may find themselves staring at a golden opportunity: the chance to draft Anton Frondell, the top-rated European skater in this year's class. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Anton Frondell is widely projected to go within the No. 3 to No. 7 range, which could put him squarely in Philadelphia's sights depending on how the lottery shakes out. Why scouts are high on Anton Frondell Despite modest stats this season—11 goals and 14 assists in Sweden's second-tier men's league—Anton Frondell has garnered strong comparisons to players like Aleksander Barkov for his 200-foot game and hockey IQ. 'His strength lies in his ability to combine his strong awareness, drive and hockey IQ with his 200-foot game. Overall, he possesses great composure and poise at such a young age, much like Leo Carlsson in his draft year,' according to the Hockey Writers. Breaking down DRAFT PROSPECT Anton Frondell with Alex Appleyard; Flyers hire assistant coaches Anton Frondell, who only recently turned 18 in May, was also playing through nagging injuries for most of the season — a factor that could explain a statistical dip from his 39-point performance (18G, 21A) with Djurgårdens' junior squad last year. "He has a quick, accurate shot and can create his own scoring opportunities. His puckhandling is excellent, allowing him to maintain possession and navigate through defenders. He shows creativity and has a knack for making smart plays under pressure, whether that be with slick passes or taking quality shots on net. Frondell displays a high hockey IQ, often making quick decisions that positively impact his team's play. He reads the game well, anticipating plays and positioning himself effectively. This intelligence contributes to both offensive and defensive phases of play,' added. FC Hockey's Jocke Andersson What makes Frondell especially intriguing for the Flyers is his potential as a defensively responsible, playmaking center—a glaring need for Philadelphia as they continue to retool under GM Daniel Briere. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While no one is calling him the next Barkov just yet, the similarities in style—high IQ, two-way reliability, ability to drive transition—are hard to ignore. Frondell could eventually fill a second-line center role, with upside to grow into a top-line player if his offensive ceiling hits. And just imagine him centering a line with Matvei Michkov in the years to come—a potential pairing of skill, smarts, and scoring touch that could become a staple of the Flyers' top six. Will Anton Frondell fall to the Flyers' draft slot? The big question is whether Frondell will still be on the board when the Flyers pick. Ranked by many scouting services in the top 5–7 range, he could very well be gone by the time Philadelphia makes its selection—but if a run on defensemen or North American forwards happens early, there's a real chance he slips. Also read: For a Flyers team that's looking to build a sustainable winner and already has one of the league's top prospects in Michkov, Frondell could be the perfect fit down the middle—a cerebral, steady, and skilled pivot who could anchor their lineup for years.
