Metro Detroit nonprofit, Two Men and a Truck partner to deliver school supplies to teachers
A nonprofit is making sure teachers in Metro Detroit are ready for the new school year by equipping them with free books and supplies.
It's thanks to the nonprofit, Making Spirits Bright, which began when executive director Maria Dismondy noticed a need in Detroit.
"We collect, sort and redistribute books to families who wouldn't have books in their homes otherwise," said Dismondy.
Dismondy started this book bank because Detroit didn't have one at the time.
Now, she's using her resources, and with the help of various partners, they're putting on a free teacher shopping event at Focus: HOPE on Oakman Boulevard.
"This event is about community coming together to support teachers," said Dismondy.
As a former educator, Dismondy says teachers pay hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets to prepare their classrooms for the year.
This Wednesday, around 300 teachers will fill grocery carts with books and supplies they need free of charge.
"Making Spirits Bright could not have done it without Focus: HOPE, who is lending us their warehouse, and Two Men and a Truck, who is transporting the supplies," Dismondy said.
Making Spirits Bright is also receiving help from across Michigan, with one organization donating 30,000 books.
Partners like Two Men and A Truck marketing director Charlene Bush say this is the best part of their job.
"To get to get out and do something impactful, we got guys lining us up to be a part of these opportunities," said Bush.
