Food Lion Feeds volunteers at local Greenville food bank

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) –On Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2025, Food Lion Feeds and the Food Banks of Central and Eastern North Carolina hosted 'Food Lion Feeds Volunteer Day at CENC' in Greenville. This event took place from 8 a.m. to noon at six different Food Bank Branch locations across central and eastern North Carolina, including the local Greenville branch. Volunteer Day is also a great way for Food Lion leaders and associates to come together and give back to their communities. 650 volunteers from across the state participated in the event. Their goal today was to donate over 652,000 meals across the region, completing 352 meal kits every hour. This comes at a critical time as the number of people suffering from food insecurity in the region is over 65,000 people. This is an increase of 9,300 people since this time last year. This also includes 24,000 kids and teens under the age of 18, an increase of 4,300 kids from last year as well. They have been doing this event since 2014 to help address these issues. 'Just wanted to inspire others through being a good human. You never know what the person beside you is going through,' Store Manager for Food Lion, Danielle Bond said. 'While many of us are fortunate, just really take time to give back to your community, and fighting food insecurity is very close to home for us,' Bond said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Food Lion Feeds partners with Foodbank of Southeastern VA for food distribution in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Food Lion Feeds teamed up with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore on Tuesday to put food on tables across Hampton Roads. The event took place at Saint Paul's Mobile Pantry as part of Food Lion's 'Thanks-A-Billion' tour. Drivers were able to pull up for volunteers to put bags of fresh and nutritious food in their vehicles. One person who picked up food, Adam Rodgers, called the program amazing. 'I think it's a wonderful thing,' Rodgers said. 'A lot of people don't have the monthly income to take care of food, there's a shortage. If you can't use it yourself, you come up here because you know eligible people and you pass it out.' According to a release, Food Lion Feeds is celebrating a milestone of 1.5 billion meals donated. Norfolk was one of seven food distribution events on the tour. For more information on Food Lion Feeds, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Feeding Southwest Virginia, Food Lion distribute 600 boxes of food

LEBANON, Va. (WJHL) — A local food bank partnered with Food Lion Feeds and Russell County Emergency Management to distribute hundreds of boxes of food. On Thursday, Feeding Southwest Virginia worked with Food Lion and the EMA to feed hundreds of families at the Lebanon, Virginia government center. Roughly 600 food boxes and bags of fresh produce were distributed. USDA cancels shipments to Tri-Cities food banks Pamela Irvine, the president and CEO of Feeding Southwest Virginia, told News Channel 11 there is no shortage of food insecure people in the region. 'Food insecurity numbers are as high as what they were down here in 2008,' Irvine said. 'I mean, we have several counties down here in Southwest Virginia [where] food insecurity is 20% and higher. And so we know how challenged [the area is] economically, but also with disasters recently here in Russell County, Lebanon and Southwest Virginia, people are suffering.' Irvine credited the resilience and generosity of Southwest Virginians who help make events like Thursday's food distribution possible. 'Sometimes people just need good news and hope, and by providing something as simple as a bag of groceries and a box of food, it just enables people to go another day to have another meal,' Irvine said. Thirty Food Lion volunteers assisted in the food distribution. Food Lion Feeds manager Kevin Durkee said the grocery chain has been committed to nourishing neighbors since its founding in 1957. 'We believe that no one should have to choose between paying their rent or gas and groceries,' Durkee said. 'So if we can take away some of that uncertainty and the difficult decisions that people have to make, then that's what we're here to do.' Feeding Southwest Virginia was one of many food banks nationwide to be impacted by canceled shipments from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to Irvine, a shipment with $513,000 worth of food from the USDA was canceled. 'We need the food,' Irvine said. 'We have been like a lot of organizations, kind of watching to see funding opportunities. Are we going to continue to get funded? So we lost $513,000 worth of food from April to June in funding.' Irvine said help from groups like Food Lion Feeds has been encouraging amid the federal uncertainty. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Food Lion Feeds Kicks Off Orange Bag Campaign to Help Nourish Neighbors

For every orange bag purchased by customers over the next three weeks, five meals will be donated to local hunger-relief partners Orange Bag Campaign SALISBURY, N.C., Feb. 26, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Food Lion launched its annual three-weeklong Food Lion Feeds Orange Bag campaign in stores and online, inviting customers to directly support efforts of addressing food insecurity in their local communities. Food Lion Feeds will provide a minimum of 2 million meals* to neighbors experiencing hunger through this yearly initiative. Since the campaign began in 2019, customers have helped provide more than 25.8 million meals** through the sale of specially marked orange bags and cash donations. The campaign runs from Feb. 26 – March 18 and benefits Feeding America®, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, and local partner food banks throughout Food Lion's 10-state operating area. Food Lion Feeds was founded in 2014 by Food Lion to address food insecurity in the towns and cities it serves. Supporting the effort is easy: customers can purchase specially marked orange bags or contribute cash donations in-store or online via Food Lion To Go. Customers can also use the digital keypads at checkout to donate a specific dollar amount or round up their purchases to support the campaign. Food Lion Feeds will provide five meals for the sale of every bag to Feeding America and its partner food banks, up to 2 million meals. The total donation to each local food bank will be based on the number of eligible bagged oranges sold in each food bank's service area. Additionally, 100% of all cash donations will directly support Feeding America and its partner food banks. 'Our neighbors deserve access to nutritious foods,' said Kevin Durkee, Manager, Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion. 'When customers purchase a bag of oranges, they help nourish individuals and families in their community who are experiencing hunger. This campaign is always impactful for local communities because it gets food directly into the hands of those facing food insecurity. We're grateful to have so many customers who support and join our efforts to provide local families with nutritious meals.' The Orange Bag campaign is one of many efforts Food Lion Feeds leads during the spring. In addition to this campaign, Food Lion Feeds recently launched its sixth season of Score to Give More, teaming up with 50 collegiate basketball programs, including 14 women's teams. Through this collaboration to address food insecurity, Food Lion Feeds will help provide 100 meals* (up to 30,000 meals per team) for every free throw made. The effort benefits Feeding America® partner food banks throughout Food Lion's 10-state operating area. The initiative is amplified during the CIAA and ACC basketball tournaments, when Food Lion Feeds presents checks to its community partner food banks benefiting from the meal donations. The amounts are based on the number of free throws made by each participating college. Through Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion has helped to provide more than 1 billion meals** to individuals and families since 2014 and has committed to donate 1.5 billion meals** by 2025.
