Oli McBurnie to Swansea City: Rival interest, stumbling block and admission on future
Oli McBurnie to Swansea City: Rival interest, stumbling block and admission on future The striker is set to be on the move this summer, but a return to Swansea may not be straightforward PAMPLONA, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 21: Oli Mcburnie of UD Las Palmas reacts during the LaLiga match between CA Osasuna and UD Las Palmas at Estadio El Sadar on September 21, 2024 in Pamplona, Spain. (Photo by Juan Manuel) (Image: Juan Manuel) The transfer window hasn't even opened yet, but there's a palpable sense of excitement around Swansea City heading into the summer. Having already snapped up two new faces already, director of football Richard Montague and the club's new look recruitment team may well take their plans up a notch over the coming weeks, although judging by the rumblings on social media, it's crystal clear who fans would like to see come through the door. Neither Luka Modric nor Ben Davies, sadly, are likely to fulfil the admittedly ambitious wishes of the Jack Army. Modric is reportedly being eyed up by the MLS, while there are already suggestions that Davies could be a target for teams in Saudi Arabia. News of interest in Oli McBurnie has also seemingly captured the imagination, presumably because there seems to be at least the flicker of a chance that it could actually happen. Article continues below Swansea have, it's understood, placed the striker's name on a list of potential targets for this window, but a lot will still need to happen if a move is to come to fruition. Following their relegation from La Liga, Las Palmas have released the 28-year-old due to clause in his contract, and that clearly pushes him further towards the sort of basket Swansea might be operating in this summer. But they surely won't be the only ones to have been alerted to his availability. Indeed, reports elsewhere claim Hull City have already expressed an interest, while there are also believed to be admirers from elsewhere in Spain. For what it's worth, McBurnie himself is understood to be open to a return to the UK as evidenced by recent comments made in the wake of his release. "Obviously, we didn't reach our goal this year and we didn't manage to stay up, so my contract has gone from three years to being up again, so I'm a free agent," he told BBC Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven this week. 'Then next week, I'll head back home for the summer and have a couple of weeks with the family. It's been lovely being out here but, at the same time, it's obviously hard being away from the family so much. I'll have a talk about it with my missus and see what we want to do.' It seems there may well be some clarity over his next move within the next couple of weeks. Whether Swansea are still in the hunt by then remains to be seen. Article continues below But it's that point that could prove the big sticking point. McBurnie's wage demands, it's claimed, could well be beyond what Swansea are able to offer, and indeed some other Championship clubs. In any case, the Swans need to actually put a proposal down for it to be considered, and sources have indicated to WalesOnline that interest from SA1 hasn't morphed into a concrete approach at this stage. If that's to change, Swansea may well have to get creative.

Swansea City weigh up exciting Oli McBurnie reunion as striker speaks out
Swansea City weigh up exciting Oli McBurnie reunion as striker speaks out The striker is one of a number of options currently being considered by Swansea's recruitment team Former Swans striker Oli McBurnie is now a free agent (Image: Getty ) Swansea City are weighing up a possible reunion with Scotland striker Oli McBurnie, following his release from Las Palmas. The 28-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Spanish side in 2024, but a clause in his contract means he's set to be released after the club's relegation from La Liga. Now, it seems Swansea could well be considering a possible return for the Scotland international, having sold him for £20m back in 2019. Sign up to the Swansea City WhatsApp service to get breaking news and top stories sent to your phone However, WalesOnline understands he's merely one of a number of options currently being considered by Swansea's recruitment team, and there's not yet been anything concrete in terms of an approach at this stage. McBurnie has enjoyed his time in Spain, but is open to the possibility of a return to the UK and, should a deal be possible, would potentially be interested in coming back to the Swans. The striker enjoyed a rich run of goalscoring form during his first spell at the club, netting 26 goals in 62 appearances, Article continues below But Swansea are unlikely to be alone should they wish to press ahead with any interest, with Hull City among the other sides to have been linked over the last few weeks. That interest in his signature is likely to intensify following his release. "We didn't reach our goal this year and we didn't manage to stay up so my contract has gone from three years to being up again, so I'm a free agent," McBurnie told BBC Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven discussing his upcoming exit from Las Palmas. "We've got one game left against Espanyol, then next week I'll head back home for the summer and have a couple of weeks with the family. It's lovely being out here but, at the same time, it's hard being away from the family so much. We'll talk and see what we want to do." Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. Should the Swans choose to move for McBurnie, he could become their third signing of what's already proving to be a busy summer for the club. Scottish youngster Bobby Wales is set to join on a free transfer later in the window, although Swansea will have to pay a compensation fee for his services. Article continues below Meanwhile, winger Zeidane Inoussa has also joined.

Swansea consider re-signing free agent McBurnie
Swansea City are weighing up a move for their former striker Oli McBurnie as he has become a free agent following the relegation of his current club Las Palmas. The Scotland international, 28, has confirmed he has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave the Gran Canaria club for free following their relegation from Spain's top flight. Advertisement McBurnie joined Las Palmas in 2024 on a three-year contract from Sheffield United, who had paid Swansea a fee of £20m for his signature five years earlier. He has settled well in Spain on and off the field, impressing local media and fans by conducting post-match interviews in Spanish. However, he was a transfer target for several Championship clubs in January and his new availability as a result of Las Palmas' relegation will reignite that interest. "We didn't reach our goal this year and we didn't manage to stay up so my contract has gone from three years to being up again, so I'm a free agent," McBurnie told BBC Radio Sheffield's Football Heaven. McBurnie was a fans' favourite during his first stint at Swansea, scoring 26 goals in 62 appearances. The Welsh club have already made two signings for the 2025-26 season in the form of winger Zeidane Inoussa and striker Bobby Wales. The Swans finished this campaign in 11th place in the Championship and made caretaker boss Alan Sheehan their permanent head coach last month.
