Young driver given eight-year ban after his female passenger cheated death in 'horrendous' high-speed crash

Jonathan Hicks, 21, was doing 76mph in a built-up area when he lost control of his high-performance car which hit a wall before rebounding across the road. A "grossly-overconfident" young driver has been given an eight-year ban after his female passenger cheated death in a "horrendous" high-speed crash. ‌ Jonathan Hicks was doing 76mph in a built-up area when he lost control of his high-performance car which hit a wall before rebounding across the road. ‌ A female front seat passenger was thrown out of the Ford Fiesta ST's rear window. ‌ She suffered multiple fractures and underwent extensive surgery. Airdrie Sheriff Court heard she was bedbound for six months during a long and painful recovery. ‌ Hicks, 21, formerly of West Canal Street, Coatbridge, narrowly avoided jail when he admitted causing the woman serious injury by dangerous driving. The crash happened on Coatbridge Road, Bargeddie, shortly after midnight on September 16, 2023. The court heard that Hicks overtook another car on the dual carriageway, where the speed limit is 30, before losing control and hitting a garden wall. ‌ The woman was found lying on the road, covered in blood and screaming for help. Hicks had sustained a head wound. Police investigators found he had accelerated from 14mph to 76mph in just 11 seconds. They also discovered that the woman had not been wearing a seat belt. ‌ The court heard she still suffers physical pain and is prone to panic attacks nearly two years on. Last year Hicks had his driving licence revoked following a previous careless driving offence. Defence lawyer Matthew McGovern said he "accepts full responsiblity" for causing the woman's injuries and pointed out there has been no further offending. ‌ The solicitor added: "It was stupidity on his part and a heavy price has been paid. "But the sentencing guidelines for young persons apply. "The court must have regard to the fact that people of his age are less mature and are poorer decision-makers." ‌ Sheriff Derek Livingston said: "It's gross over-confidence, thinking he can drive at that speed. "It was a horrendous piece of driving with horrendous consequences. "He is a real danger on the road and it needs to be a long time before he is allowed to drive again. ‌ "I'm minded not to impose custody but to throw the kitchen sink at him." Hicks, now of North Ayrshire, must do 300 hours of unpaid community work and will be confined to his home each night under a 12-month electronic tagging order.

Man in tears after 'feud' thugs torch his car outside Coatbridge home

Dimitrios Boncota says he has put "blood, sweat, and tears" into his Ford Fiesta ST but has been left devastated after it was set alight. A Coatbridge man has been left "shocked" and tearful after witnessing his car destroyed in an overnight arson attack. ‌ Dimitrios Boncota shared his devastation after he invested "blood, sweat, and tears" into his Ford Fiesta ST, only to find it reduced to ashes following a fire that broke out shortly after midnight on Tuesday, July 15, on Albion Street. ‌ He is of the belief that his car was mistaken for another target, and is currently waiting for further news from Police Scotland concerning the investigation. ‌ Dimitrios expressed his disbelief to Glasgow Live, he said: "I was beyond shocked when I saw the car in flames through the door peephole. That car's had blood, sweat, and tears put into it, and it's a shame that it's been turned into dust over getting caught in between someone else's feud." Conveying the impact of the incident on his life, he said: "I've been left with no car and been off work today, still in shock, awaiting police to contact me regarding this being investigated. "I haven't heard anything yet, so hopefully this gets resolved soon, and whoever did this is brought to justice. Me and my Mrs, Kerys, were in tears last night seeing my pride and joy go up in flames, and even today kept waiting to wake up from this fever dream." Images show the dramatic scenes as massive orange flames consumed the car. Subsequent photographs show the vehicle utterly scorched by the inferno. ‌ In the wake of the troubling event, Dimitrios has called for anyone with details about the blazing attack to reach out to the authorities. A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We got the call at 12.10am to a vehicle fire at Albion Street in Coatbridge. We mobilised one appliance to the scene." Driver jailed after 140mph motorway chase

A driver who reached speeds of 140mph during a pursuit that began on the M6, according to police, has been jailed and banned from driving. Lewis Moore, 34, from Neston, Cheshire, was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison and disqualified from driving for 14 months at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Friday. Moore admitted to dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a proper licence and driving without insurance. He also received a financial penalty of £154. Officers from Staffordshire Police said Moore refused to stop while driving a blue Ford Fiesta ST near junction 14 on the northbound carriageway of the M6 on 30 December. He reached speeds of 140mph and used the hard shoulder to undertake vehicles in his way, they added. They said the car eventually came to a stop near junction 16 when it ran out of fuel. PC Kara Pilarczyk said officers were "extremely grateful" to other drivers who saw what was happening and gave them space to work safely and detain the driver.
