Over 60 professionally carved ice art pieces are taking over Perry Square. The second weekend of Winter Carnival began Thursday starting with live carvings around 4 p.m. Erie Zoo ready to open their gates for 100th year The Jeannette, Pennsylvania-based ice company DiMartino was out prepping and building the walls Thursday morning with about 115 blocks of ice. One of the carvers said they have prepared their greatest hits and are excited to bring them to life. Fore! Barstool Open returning for another year 'We're going to have a big basketball scene, it's going to have a couple basketball players and a big basketball hoop, it's a pretty fun ice sculpture and we're going to have a huge lion that's going to be carved as well. Those are two of my favorite ones and I think one of the crowd favorites will be an interactive tractor, you'll be able to sit on a three-dimensional tractor with big tires, it will be a fun one for sure,' said Jared McAlister, an ice carver for DiMartino Ice. Live carvings will continue throughout the weekend along with other activities including gallery night at the Erie Art Museum and the Erie Barstool Open on Saturday. Dinner at a nice restaurant is a popular way for couples to celebrate Valentine's Day and local restaurants have been preparing for 'table for two please'. Valentine's Day is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants and local managers said the reservation books are already filled up. Erie chocolatiers busy as Valentine's Day rush starts For many couples, it's a Valentine's Day tradition to celebrate with a nice dinner out. And for many local restaurants, reservations have been filling up fast in anticipation of the holiday. 'It's tight. We've been fully booked for a couple weeks now. We're trying to fit any little piece in that we can to get everyone down here,' said Lucas Winslow, Two45 Grille food and beverage manager. Winslow said the staff at Two45 has been preparing special menus, cocktails, and decorations for the big day. Fore! Barstool Open returning for another year And with cold weather slowing down business for the past few weeks, he said it's refreshing to see a busy night of reservations. 'We've been through it. We're ready to go. We're all very excited to get some people down here obviously in the Winter. It's been a little bit slower but having Valentine's Day and people coming back to the water, I know everyone's excited for the summer, but it's a good time to come down here right now too,' Winslow said. Subscribe Now There's heaters down here and it's actually pretty warm compared to when I was out there like five minutes ago, but this isn't the only way couples will be spending their Valentine's Day. Dinner reservations at the Cork 1794 in West Erie Plaza are fully booked through the weekend, but their general manager says they're committed to giving guests the best dining experience possible. 'We're fully committed for our dinner services. We've brought in some special items like a beef wellington, chicken penne a la vodka, baked brie with honey and pistachios and a couple other cool things just to bring Valentine's weekend all together,' said Greg Jones, The Cork 1794 general manager. Book lovers can head to the Blasco Library over the next few days for a good deal on books for an even better cause. The Friends of the Erie County Library are hosting a sale in the Admiral Room of the Blasco Library Thursday through Saturday. Gannon donating two cruisers to Erie Police Department Books are lightly used and are mostly collected in donation drives. The most a book will be sold for is $2 and what isn't sold will be put back up for sale at the Great American Book Sale in July. Fore! Barstool Open returning for another year 'Inflation has hit every segment of commerce and books are quite a bit more expensive,' said Kathleen Horan, coordinator of small book sales for Friends of the Library. 'Programs that the library offers to children and adults a variety of programs, the idea lab, books for kids, book in a bag, all of those things are paid for by friends of the library.'
