Two bulldozer drivers killed after plunging into ravine, slope
KUALA KRAI: Two men were killed after the bulldozers they were driving plunged into a slope and ravine at two separate locations yesterday. Kuala Krai district police chief Superintendent Mazlan Mamat said the first incident involved a 49-year-old Thai national whose bulldozer slipped and fell down a slope at Ladang Dabong, Km27 of Jalan Sungai Sam-Dabong. He said the police received a call about the incident at 2.50pm. "Initial investigations found that the victim was driving the bulldozer to a hillside area to take a break when the machine slipped and fell down the slope. He was flung from the vehicle and subsequently crushed. "The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. "His body was retrieved from the bulldozer with the help of the Fire and Rescue Department," he said in a statement last night. In the second incident, Mazlan said a 59-year-old local man died after the bulldozer he was driving fell into a ravine over 100 metres deep at Ladang Bonanza, Laloh, Kuala Krai at around 3.30pm. "Preliminary investigations found that the victim had been working at the plantation to build terraces. "However, the bulldozer slipped off the path during the work and plunged into the ravine. "The victim was trapped in the machine and was confirmed dead at the scene," he said. He said both bodies were sent to the Forensic Unit of Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital (HSIP) for post-mortem examination. "The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.

Armed robbers flee with RM390k worth of jewellery from Menglembu goldsmith
IPOH: Three masked men, armed with machetes and 'firearms', escaped with jewellery worth an estimated RM390,000 in a robbery at a goldsmith in a shopping centre in Falim, Menglembu, earlier today. Ipoh district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said the police received the first report of the armed robbery from the public at 1.25pm. "Preliminary investigations at the scene, conducted with the Forensic Unit of the Perak Police Contingent headquarters, revealed that three masked local men entered the premises and stole various pieces of jewellery, including necklaces and earrings," he said in a statement this evening. The suspects, armed with what appeared to be a pistol and a machete, fled the scene in a white Toyota Camry. No injuries were reported. Efforts are underway to track down the suspects. The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old witness, who declined to be named, said the incident occurred around 1.15pm, during Friday prayers, when the shopping centre was relatively quiet. The woman, who works at a shoe shop opposite the gold outlet, said the supermarket's emergency alarm was triggered, but she initially thought it was a routine alarm test. According to her, the suspects had parked their car strategically between the shopping centre's glass doors - equipped with motion sensors - to keep them open throughout the heist. "I didn't notice them entering as I was busy attending to customers. Suddenly, the alarm went off and people started running. It felt far more intense than a routine inspection," she said. "I only saw two of them, with one holding a machete as they exited the gold shop and headed towards the car parked right in front of the glass door," she added.

Priority given to construction of new bridge on Jalan Permatang Pauh, says Nanta
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to build a new bridge to replace the Kampung Bertam Bridge in Jalan Permatang Pauh, Seberang Perai Tengah in Penang will be given priority, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Works Minister said an inspection by the Public Works Department (JKR) Forensic Unit in the middle of last year found that the existing bridge was in a dilapidated condition and no longer safe for long-term use. "I take this issue seriously and will strive for the construction of the new bridge to be given priority in the coming planning and allocation. "The people's safety is always our priority at the Works Ministry," he said in a Facebook post Friday (May 2) after surveying the Kampung Bertam Bridge, which is located near the Masjid Papan landmark. He said that, at the end of last year, temporary repairs involving the installation of riprap, a type of coarse rock material used to protect structures from erosion, at a cost of RM90,000 were carried out to reduce the risk of structural failure. In addition, Nanta said JKR is planning for the implementation of additional temporary repair works, such as polyurethane injection (a form of waterproofing and sealing technique using liquid polyurethane foam), to ensure the bridge can continue to be used without compromising the safety of users. "I was informed that the Seberang Perai Tengah JKR and federal road concessionaire are constantly monitoring the bridge situation," he said. — Bernama
