Whanganui rugby: Marist extend streak in thriller
Marist halfback Daniel Kauika had another big match with two tries plus a conversion and a penalty, while fullback and backup kicker Te Heru Reu Koro also added a conversion. The other tries came from Marist's in-form lock Rongomai McLean-Wanoa and winger Shaun O'Leary. Taihape picked up a couple of yellow cards which hurt their chances, but they also got an automatic seven-point penalty try. Their player-provided tries came from hooker Tru Ratana-Horton and reserve forward Sam Reeves, while first-five Chad Whale converted both and landed a penalty. Continuing to lead the Tasman Tanning Senior unbeaten are McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu, who snapped Utiku Old Boys' three-game winning streak with a 31-17 win at Memorial Park. Second-placed Forest 360 Marist Knights dominated the big club derby with Direct Connect Marist Celtic 62-18. At the Country Club, Seales Winslow Pirates scored the last try to pull clear of Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau 22-15 for a much-needed win to climb back up to sixth. McCrea Scanning Counties continued their firm grip on the Whanganui Challenge Shield after a no-nonsense 31-7 win over Border, in a bit of a reunion match with a couple of former Border Premier stars now with Counties facing their old mates. Border therefore fell back from the Top 8, as Kelso Hunterville leapfrogged them after a tough 22-22 draw at home against Bennett's Taihape. Whanganui club rugby: Taihape second on premier table after win over Border
But having played hard games throughout the round, Taihape were conditioned for the tough stuff and took over in the second half to rattle off three straight tries, with Whale converting two of them, for a 26-13 turnaround with less than 10 minutes remaining. Getting a big lift from their bench, which included regular starters, dotting down were incumbent Steelform Whanganui prop Gabriel Hakaraia, who came on behind his brother Te Uhi and skipper Hoani Woodhead in the front row, reserve outside back Ryan Karatau and reserve forward Isaiah Mātana. Similar to Tāmata Hauhā Rātana in the Pa, Border managed to score near fulltime to at least secure what could be an important bonus point – reserve Rusiate Lalanabaravi getting a try which was duly converted. Taihape's victory made it three wins from their past four visits to Waverley since 2022. Also having reached the halfway point of their grade is the Tasman Tanning Senior teams, and the Border Seniors have now done something their Premier side hasn't – won a game on the field, as the home side secured a 35-14 victory over Bennett's Taihape to jump into the Top 8. There are new competition leaders and a sole unbeaten team, as McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu did what they promised and pulled the high-flying Forest 360 Marist Knights into an honest country scrap – holding on for a 15-11 win. The Whanganui Challenge Shield remains locked up at the Macnab Domain, but not without McCrea Scanning Counties having to work to keep up, beating bottom-of-the-table Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau 22-10. The Spriggens Park derby narrowly went the way of Direct Connect Marist Celtic, who held off Seales Winslow Pirates 24-19 while, after their slow start to the campaign, Utiku Old Boys rocketed up to fifth spot on the table after their third straight win, beating home side Kelso Hunterville 31-20. Results, May 16-17 Tasman Tanning Premier Dave Hoskin Carriers Marist 28 (Daniel Kauika, Te Heru Reu Koro, Brett Joyes, Cyprien Bernard, Lachlan Fisher tries; Kauika pen) bt Tāmata Hauhā Rātana 21 (Onewa Tai, Shade Tuaine-Whanau, Rangi Kui tries; Kui 2 pen). HT: 13-5. Byfords Readimix Taihape 26 (Tremaine Gilbert, Gabriel Hakaraia, Ryan Karatau, Isaiah Mātana; Chad Whale 3 con) bt Waverley Harvesting Border 20 (Romu Senileba, Rusiate Lalanabaravi tries; Tyrone Albert 2 pen, 2 con). HT: 13-7 Border. Tasman Tanning Senior Dallison Park: Border bt Bennett's Taihape 35-14. Rochfort Park: McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu bt Forest 360 Marist Knights 15-11. Whanganui club rugby: Kaierau remain unbeaten with dominant 50-13 win over Marist
The play remained scrappy early in the second stanza, but then the decisive moment came when Kaierau fullback Adam Boult hared after a tactical ruck kick from first five Sheldon Pakinga, snatching it and clearing two defenders to score, Pakinga deservedly adding the extras. Kaierau now looked to their deep bench and, after forcing a turnover inside Marist's 22m, the reserve forwards went the direct route, with hooker Joe Edwards diving under the posts for 26-8. Waitokia spied some open space for an attacking chip kick, which he regathered and fired out for winger Ezra Malo to dash into the corner. Marist would not lie down. Following a penalty scrum win, they attacked across the width and eventually hooker Atriane Marino drove through his tackler to score for 31-13. But they would get no closer, as Boult cut through to score a double and then, after reserve winger Adrian Toia snaffled an attempted Marist clearance, his team quickly spread to the clubrooms corner for Waitokia to also get a double, Pakinga converting from the touchline. The try to bring up 50 points was special as a Robinson chip was grabbed by Waitokia, who attacked deep into Marist territory, and then Malo's cross-kick was claimed in the air by Pakinga to score. It was a different story in the curtain-raiser from the senior competition as Forest 360 Marist Knights ran riot against Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau, winning the contest 83-0. The Whanganui Challenge Shield was successfully defended for the first time this season at Macnab Domain, as McCrea Scanning Counties defeated Kelso Hunterville 26-15. Undefeated McCarthy's Transport Rupaehu held off Direct Connect Marist Celtic 24-19, while in the Memorial Park derby, Utiku Old Boys picked up their first win despite a late score by Taihape, 31-29. Results, May 2-3 Tasman Tanning Premier Barracks Challenge Shield – Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau 50 (Te Rangatira Waitokia 2, Adam Boult 2, Raymond Salu, Joe Edwards, Ezra Malo, Sheldon Pakinga tries; Pakinga 4 con, Ethan Robinson con) bt Dave Hoskin Carriers Marist 13 (Carliwyn Riddles, Atriane Marino tries; Wiremu Morgan pen). Whanganui club rugby: Kaierau reclaim Whanganui Rugby Shield with win over Taihape
Coming out of the break, Taihape knew they needed to score first and after multiple phases pounding Kaierau's line, the attackers finally outstripped defenders with second five Cyrus Tasi scoring out wide for 24-19. A missed touch-finder from Taihape let Kaierau work swiftly back into the attacking 22m and, from close range, barnstorming prop Raymond Salu could not be stopped from scoring. Again, Taihape would not lie down as Raukawa scored his second try under the posts for 31-26 with 15 minutes left and then the home side poured on the pressure. But Kaierau absorbed it and from an attacking scrum, Robinson combined with winger Jordyn Turvey to get the ball back and score his double and what proved the match-winner. There was better joy for home supporters in the senior competition as Bennett's Taihape won the curtain-raiser with Gemini Pepper Construction Kaierau 40-10. In the 2024 grand final rematch, Forest 360 Marist Knights extracted considerable revenge with a 60-14 hammering of Utiku Old Boys. Knights sit second on the table to McCarthy's Transport Ruapehu, who picked up a strong 53-12 away win over the previous side to beat Utiku in Seales Winslow Pirates. Perhaps the most impressive result was at Macnab Domain as the rebuilding McCrea Scanning Counties held off a late comeback by Direct Connect Marist Celtic to win 31-27 and secure the Stihl Shop Wanganui Challenge Shield for the first time since 2019. Kelso Hunterville rebounded from losing the shield to Celtic last week by beating Border 45-19.
