77 bidders vie for ‘forever home' in no-reserve auction frenzy

An investor edged out scores of first-home buyers among a massive 77 bidders at a no-reserve auction for a renovated 'forever home'. A crowd of 300 people turned out to see the Forest Lake deceased estate go under the hammer at the charity auction. The three-bedroom home with a pool sold for $987,000 after auctioneer Justin Nickerson fielded a total of 62 bids. Marketing agent Saeed Moghadeen, of Brisbane Real Estate, said the late owner had donated all proceeds from the sale of her home at 14 Barrier Place to an undisclosed charity. Mr Moghadeen said bids flew after the initial offer of $200,000, with many first-home buyers in the race hopeful of securing the move-in ready property at a discounted price. 'I've been selling property for 22 years and this was the first time I've done a no-reserve auction – I'm now thinking this is probably the way to sell property because the energy on the floor was crazy,' he said. 'Bids were flying from everywhere – I've never seen anything like it before.' A Brisbane-based investor emerged victorious, with the sale price sitting $232,000 above the suburb's median for a three-bedroom house. Aus hotspots where it is cheaper to rent than own Inside slumlord's shocking empire The Aus city 1.5m people are planning to buy in Mr Moghadeen said he would have estimated the home's value around $1.05m. 'This single-level stunner combines comfort with true liveability,' the listing stated. 'Homes like this don't come up often, and this one's being sold at auction with no reserve. Students stage walkout at Forest Lake High over club cut proposal

Students at Forest Lake High School staged a walkout on Friday in protest to planned district cuts to non-school-sponsored clubs. The walkout happened around 1 p.m., with hundreds of students exiting school buildings, before rallying on the overpass over Highway 61. It comes as the Forest Lake School Board discusses a new policy that would cut funding and staff support for student interest groups at middle schools and high schools unless they are either tied to curriculum or Minnesota State High School League activities. As has been previously reported by the Forest Lake Times, this has sparked concern that it would lead to the closure of a number of current student groups, including those that cater for students with disabilities and minority groups such as Hmong club and the Black, Indigenous, People of Color group. Speaking to KSTP, school board chairman Curt Rebelein said that if the policy passes, the groups may have to go through an annual application process and have a non-paid staff member to supervise, claiming that making this change would align the district with state and federal recommendations. But a parent told KARE 11 that there are middle school groups at surrounding school districts that operate with support, expressing skepticism over the argument that making the change would align with state and federal policies. In a memo to parents this week, the school said that students who choose to leave the building would be marked as unexcused for the time missed. "While we support our students' right to express themselves, it's important to note: The proposed walkout is not sponsored or endorsed by Forest Lake Area High School, Community School, Middle School or the Forest Lake Area School District," the memo said. "If you do hear from your student during the day, we encourage you to remind them of the potential academic and attendance consequences of walking out. Please encourage them to remain in class, stay focused, and finish the school day strong. Your guidance in the moment can make a real difference," it added. "We recognize that this may come as a surprise and that many families may not have the chance to discuss it with their student in advance. Our staff will continue to support all students throughout the day and encourage them to stay engaged in class." A vote on the changes is expected sometime next month.

2026 Volvo XC60 Refresh Includes New-Look Grille, Bigger Touchscreen

The and its plug-in-hybrid twin, the , have been refreshed for the 2026 model year. Both models have identical redesigned front ends, with the grille taking after the larger . The interior adds a larger touchscreen that says is more than twice as fast as the outgoing system. Following a reserved 2025 model year that saw no changes, Volvo's set of XC60 compact luxury SUVs gets a facelift. Changes are identical between the gas-powered and plug-in-hybrid models, with the updates focused on exterior styling and interior technology. The exterior styling tweaks are subtle enough, but they bring the XC60 more in line with Volvo's flagship XC90, which was updated last year. The front grille now uses the same diagonal motif, highlighting Volvo's iron mark logo on the grille. Changes at the rear of the SUV are even harder to spot, with the Scandinavian brand simply darkening the taillight shroud. The new look is capped off with new wheel options and a trio of paint colors that includes Forest Lake, Aurora Silver, and Mulberry Red. Unsurprisingly, changes to the interior similarly follow those bestowed on the XC90 last year. The highlight is the inclusion of a new 11.2-inch touchscreen, which replaces the XC60's outgoing 9.0-inch unit. Volvo says the new screen's pixel density is 21 percent better than the outgoing screen. More important than the new hardware is the improved software. The XC60 gets Qualcomm's updated Snapdragon Cockpit software, which is claimed to be more than twice as fast as the outgoing system. The result should be a more responsive touchscreen. The refreshed XC60 is already available to order in select markets, though North America does not seem to be part of that yet. Volvo confirmed to Car and Driver that the reveal was for the global market and we'll need to wait a bit longer for U.S. pricing and availability. If the XC90 can be used as a bellwether for pricing, we don't expect the facelift to cause either the XC60 or the XC60 Hybrid to jump too far from their respective $48,345 and $59,345 starting prices.
