Mara expels six students for bullying, adopts zero-tolerance policy
Students involved in bullying will not be given second chances, says Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. This follows his order for the immediate suspension and expulsion of six students from a Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) in Melaka. Asyraf Wajdi said he was alerted early on Saturday (July 26) to a viral incident involving Form Five students allegedly bullying a junior and requested a full report from Mara management. "All six Form Five students involved in the bullying have been suspended and are recommended for expulsion. There is no need for any appeal," he wrote in a strongly worded Facebook post on Saturday. Asyraf Wajdi also issued a stern reminder to Mara leadership not to entertain requests for leniency, adding he would not entertain personal appeals. "I have made it clear to the Mara management not to entertain any appeals. There is no need for anyone to try to meet me to plead on their behalf," he added. He stressed that Mara would not compromise on bullying, describing it as a serious violation of the values the institution aims to uphold. "We have reminded everyone repeatedly that Mara will not tolerate bullying in any form. We want to produce future leaders with strong morals and good character, not individuals who destroy our values of religion and civilisation," he said. Asyraf Wajdi added he is committed to making MRSM schools and all Mara educational institutions "bully-free zones". "InsyaAllah, I am determined to make MRSM and all Mara education institutions bully-free zones," he said. Mara has yet to reveal further details on the incident, but Asyraf Wajdi's firm stance reflects a growing zero-tolerance approach towards bullying in educational institutions under its purview.

The former students of the 1975 batch of Sultan Yusuff School at their 50th anniversary reunion. LAUGHTER, nostalgia and heartfelt memories filled the air at Lembah Jernih in Lahat, Perak, as 80 former students of the 1975 batch of Sultan Yusuff School in Batu Gajah gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their reunion. Marking half a century since leaving school after Form Five, the event was held at a multi-purpose hall amid a fruit orchard about 3km away from Batu Gajah town. Organised by a dedicated committee led by Ahmad Sohaimi Jamaluddin, the event brought together former classmates from near and far, including Thomas Liew Kooi Nyap and Lai Chee Keong, who travelled from the United States for the celebration. The reunion saw the former students reconnect with each other as well as with the educators who shaped their formative years. Among the teachers honoured at the event were Chee Hee Seng, George Selvaratnam, Surjan Singh, Daljit Singh, Lee Kok Chiang, Thong Kai Foo, See Yim Chow and the school's former laboratory technician Yoon Siew Phang. Speaking on behalf of the teachers, Chee expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome and recognition. 'It is truly touching to be remembered and honoured after so many years. 'Thank you for making us a part of this meaningful occasion,' he said. Liew, in his address, paid tribute to the teachers for their unwavering guidance and dedication. 'Your passion, discipline and no-nonsense approach helped instil values that have stayed with us through life and instilled independence, responsibility and the courage to pursue our dreams,' he said. As a token of appreciation, specially designed T-shirts and keychains created by former student Gerard Lessler were presented to the teachers. The event underscored not only the enduring friendships built during school days, but also the lasting impact of good teachers and shared values. The organising committee expressed their heartfelt thanks to all attendees and contributors, with special appreciation for those who made long-distance efforts to be present.

New submission dates set in senior cop's murder trial
IPOH: The High Court today set new dates for submissions in the murder trial of senior police officer Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, who is charged with killing a Form Five student in 2023. Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet fixed Oct 1 and 2 for the oral hearing of submissions after allowing the defence's application to file a new written submission. The decision was made after the defence team argued that the prosecution had shifted its focus in its legal arguments. "Since the defence wishes to file a new submission after reading the prosecution's submission, I will allow the defence's application. "The defence is to file its new submission within six weeks, and the prosecution is to respond within four weeks. I will set the hearing for the oral submissions on Oct 1 and 2," he said. The court had previously set July 16 to 18 for the submissions. Earlier, lead counsel M. Athimulan, representing Mohd Nazri, told the court that the defence needed to revise its arguments. "Our submissions covered both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more concentrated on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d). "This creates a need to revise our entire submission. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks," he added. Speaking to reporters later, Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz clarified that the prosecution had stated from the outset its intention to prove the case under both sections. He said that their written submission focused on Section 300(d), while the defence's submission primarily addressed Section 300(c). "The defence needs to address the arguments under Section 300(d). It is crucial this is argued now to prevent it from becoming a legal issue during a potential appeal," he said, adding that Section 300(d) pertains to the element of knowledge of the offence. The defence team for Mohd Nazri also includes Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani also appeared for the prosecution. In its opening statement last year, the prosecution argued that the accused's actions constituted murder under Section 300(c) and/or Section 300(d) of the Penal Code. Under Section 300(c), the act is done with the intention of causing bodily injury sufficient in the ordinary course of nature to cause death. Under Section 300(d), the person committing the act knows that it is so imminently dangerous that it must, in all probability, cause death or such bodily injury as is likely to cause death, and commits such act without any excuse for incurring the risk. On Dec 18, 2023, Mohd Nazri was charged in the magistrate's court here for the murder of 17-year-old student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie in Jalan Taman Jati 1 near SMK Jati, Meru, between 11.45am and 12.32pm on Dec 15, 2023. He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which is punishable with death or imprisonment for between 30 and 40 years, with not less than 12 strokes, if found guilty.

Hong Kong school ordered to submit report after alleged student harassment in Shenzhen
Hong Kong education authorities have requested a detailed report from a secondary school following complaints that its teachers failed to promptly intervene when four drunk men reportedly harassed two female students during a study tour in Shenzhen. Advertisement The incident came to light on Sunday after students from Chang Pui Chung Memorial School revealed it in a post on social media platform Threads. According to the post, the two Form Five students encountered the men in a hotel corridor one night during the tour while they were on their way to visit their classmates in another room. The drunk men then approached the girls, tried to talk to them and even filmed them with their phones, the post said. The students then repeatedly called their teachers to seek help, but received no response. It took around 15 minutes before a teacher from another participating school noticed the situation and stepped in. Advertisement Later, a friend of the students reported that a teacher reprimanded the girls for talking to strangers, drawing criticism from some peers who said they felt the girls were being blamed instead of supported.

No place for bullies in MRSMs, says Mara chairman
RANTAU PANJANG: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) takes bullying incidents at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) seriously, especially those involving physical harm, said its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. He said that while such cases had generally declined, the latest incident in Terengganu was deeply disappointing. "Alhamdulillah, overall, such cases have significantly decreased and are now rare. "We rarely hear of incidents like this, but when they do happen, they are deeply upsetting. "To me, any act of bullying that involves physical aggression is serious," he said. Asyraf, who is also Umno secretary-general, was speaking to reporters after opening the Rantau Panjang Umno delegates' meeting here today. He said Mara would not tolerate such behaviour and hoped the action taken against six MRSM students in Terengganu would serve as a warning to others. "There will be no compromise for those involved. The action taken by Mara should be a reminder to all students across MRSM campuses," he said. Asyraf said Mara had completed its internal investigation and expelled six students involved in the case. He added that Mara continues to implement awareness and educational programmes to curb bullying. "I am saddened by this incident, and my objective is to minimise, or ideally, eliminate bullying entirely," he said. In a social media post, Asyraf confirmed that the six MRSM Besut students who bullied a Form Two student and left him injured had been expelled. He said that there will be no compromise on bullying under any circumstances. The victim had earlier claimed that he was bullied by a group of senior students in the boys' dormitory on Tuesday night, sustaining injuries to his abdomen, ribs and back. According to the 14-year-old's police report, he was forced to squat with slippers on his head for 40 minutes and was punched and slapped by several Form Three students. A warden on duty later discovered the incident and filed a report. Earlier today, Terengganu police arrested five students to assist in investigations. The suspects — four Form Three students and one Form Five student — have been remanded for three days beginning today to assist investigations under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
