Fortius Athletics in Cambuslang raise over £3000 for Alzheimer Scotland

The team of 20 from Fortius Athletics did the formidable 12-hour endurance challenge. A Cambuslang gym raised over £3000 with 12-hour solstice challenge for Alzheimer Scotland. ‌ The team of 20 from Fortius Athletics did the formidable 12-hour endurance challenge in support of the charity on Saturday June 21. ‌ From 7am to 7pm, they kept equipment running and spirits high as they tackled four disciplines – rowing, skiing, cycling and bench pressing. ‌ Timed to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, the event was part of the Alzheimer's Association's global Longest Day initiative, which encourages individuals and groups to honour those living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia by engaging in meaningful activity. Over the course of the day, the Fortius team covered astonishing distances and workloads – more than 580,000 metres biked, over 276,000 metres rowed, more than 276,000 metres skied and a massive 2300 bench presses completed. The scale of the physical effort was matched only by the dedication behind it. ‌ 'The charity is close to our hearts,' said one Fortius team member. 'Many of us have family or friends who've been affected by dementia, so this was personal. We wanted to do something that reflected the kind of resilience people with Alzheimer's show every day.' Throughout the day, gym members, family and friends stopped by to lend their support—bringing snacks, cheering on the team, and even stepping in for short bursts on the machines. The atmosphere was one of unity and purpose, with moments of quiet reflection shared alongside the buzz of effort and encouragement. ‌ By the end of the challenge, over £3000 had been raised through online donations and in-gym contributions – all of which will go directly to Alzheimer Scotland to support their vital work in research, outreach, and care. The Fortius team shared their thanks to everyone who supported the effort, adding that donations remain open via their JustGiving page. Plans are already underway for next year's challenge, with hopes of making it an annual tradition. 'It was tough. But knowing we were doing it for a cause that matters—something we all care deeply about—that's what kept us going,' said another participant. ‌ 'It wasn't just about reps and metres. It was about standing up for those who can't always stand for themselves.'

The latest 'Thunderbuddy Throwdown' from a Cambuslang gym was a success for fitness and mental health. Fortius Athletics hosted their eagerly-anticipated annual event, bringing together keep-fit enthusiasts of all abilities for an intense yet rewarding day. The day was held in support of SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health), raising awareness and funds for mental health services. SAMH provides invaluable support, information, and services to people experiencing mental health problems across Scotland. Head coach and owner of Fortius Athletics, Nisha Purewal, expressed her immense pride in her community, saying: 'It's incredible to see everyone come together to support such an important cause.' The charity works tirelessly to promote mental wellbeing and ensure that everyone has access to the help they need. Every penny raised on the day will contribute to their vital work. Fortius Athletics has long been dedicated to promoting functional fitness for all levels of fitness, encouraging individuals to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle. The competition truly embodied this philosophy, welcoming participants from all backgrounds and experience levels. Among the athletes were those who had only been practicing the sport for six months, stepping onto the competition floor for the first time, as well as seasoned competitors with up to eight years of experience. This diversity brought a unique sense of camaraderie and inspiration to the day, showcasing that strength lies in more than just physical ability. The day wasn't just about fitness – it was a celebration of community spirit. Local businesses played a significant role in the event's success, generously donating an array of fantastic prizes for a raffle. These contributions added an extra layer of excitement and encouraged even more participation, further boosting the event's fundraising efforts. Fortius Athletics, located in Cambuslang, has been at the heart of the local fitness community for nine years and now boasts over 80 dedicated members. Nisha herself is no stranger to competition, having finished an impressive 10th in the 2025 CrossFit Open in the UK. Her leadership and passion for fitness continues to inspire the Fortius community to aim higher and push further. Throughout the day, 20 determined teams battled through four gruelling workouts designed to test their limits. After a remarkable display of grit and teamwork, the top six teams advanced to a thrilling final, delivering an electrifying conclusion that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Fortius community and its supporters, the event successfully raised an outstanding £2115 for SAMH, contributing to vital mental health resources and programs. Once again, Fortius Athletics has proven that fitness can be a powerful force for good, combining a passion for sport with a meaningful cause.
