Ivy's First LP In 14 Years Has Adam Schlesinger On Every Song

Beloved New York-reared indie trio Ivy were inactive for the better part of eight years before group member Adam Schlesinger died of COVID-19 during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020. Since then, surviving husband-and-wife duo Dominque Durand and Andy Chase have paid tribute to Schlesinger in a moving video retrospective and overseen several back catalog reissues, but there was no new Ivy album on the horizon — until now. Durand, Chase and longtime multi-instrumentalist Bruce Driscoll have combed through their demo archives to surface the previously unreleased material on Traces of You, which will emerge Sept. 5 through Bar/None Records. Each of the 10 tracks offers contributions from Schlesinger, including lead single 'Say You Will,' which was built from a 2009 demo where he played bass and keyboard. R.E.M./Atoms for Peace drummer Joey Waronker plays on the finished version. More from Spin: Island Time: From Dance Floors to Yacht Rock, the Ting Tings Ride A New Wave The Head & The Heart Turn The Corner On 'Aperture' Tour Foo Fighters, Chappell Roan Head South For Corona Capital With occasional flashes of mainstream success but enduring fan appeal, Ivy are perhaps best known for their 1997 sophomore album Apartment Life, from which 'This Is the Day' popped up in the classic '90s comedy There's Something About Mary and the vibrant, moody 'The Best Thing' garnered modern rock airplay. The trio, who formed in 1994 but slowed down in the 2000s while Schlesinger devoted more time to Fountains of Wayne, last released an album in 2011 with After Hours. 'The songs here were all unused and abandoned ideas from the various albums and film scores we worked on,' the band members tell SPIN of the Traces of You material. 'We'd never released any parts of them.' The resulting music is amongst the most diverse Ivy have ever released, from the bass- and keyboard-driven 'Fragile People' and the wistful, undulating title track to 'The Great Unknown,' which has an almost Garbage-y, electro feel and the tender, acoustic guitar-led 'Hate That It's True.' Band members say album opener 'The Midnight Hour' was the most complete of the fragments, as 'the first verse and chorus were sung back when they were originally demoed. Adam's bass was there and Andy had played all the guitar and keys. The second verse, the bridge and the 'feel the rush' vocal hook were all new additions when we got together with Bruce. What's amazing is that Dominique's vocals between verse one and two are seamless, as if no time had passed.' Schlesinger's Fountains of Wayne cohorts Brian Young (drums) and Jody Porter (guitar) later added parts to the recording. Ivy found themselves slipping back into some old work habits during the process, but thankfully, with ear-pleasing results. 'Dominique disliked the existing idea for 'Heartbreak,' which was Andy on guitar and keys and Adam on bass with the main part of the song you hear at the introduction,' they say. 'By the time we added the horn parts, the chorus chords and found depressing lyrics to offset the happy sound of the song, she came around.' Asked what fans will enjoy most about hearing Schlesinger's work on Traces of You, Ivy's members answer, 'on one song, you'll hear Adam on bass, the next on acoustic, the next on keys, the next he supplied a part of the melody with mumbled lyrics (which we deciphered and completed). His contributions were always gems and we never had to make them work with what we were doing. They were always essential to the idea, or we wouldn't work on the track.' Boca Raton: Resale Weezer ticket prices soar as city prepares for centennial concert

BOCA RATON — As anticipation soars for Boca Raton's centennial celebration, so do ticket prices to see Weezer headline the event. The show is sold out. However, resale tickets to see the Los Angeles-born 1990s rock band range from $200 to about $1,200 on the website They started off ranging from $40 to $124.50. "Oh my God," Ian MacLaren of Boca Raton said when he first heard of the resale prices. MacLaren plans to attend the May 24 concert at the Mizner Park Amphitheater. He and his wife snagged tickets shortly after they went on sale in April for no more than $50, he said. "It's a small venue, which is part of the draw," MacLaren said. "So, if there's that much demand after the tickets go on sale, that can kind of happen. But I am shocked by that." Weezer is set to perform at 7:30 p.m. May 24. The concert will kick off a series of centennial events as the city prepares for its 100th birthday. Gates open at 6 p.m. The 1990s rock band Fountains of Wayne will open for Weezer. It is best known for "Stacy's Mom," the 2003 hit song that propelled the New York City band into the mainstream. MacLaren, 44, grew up in Boca Raton. While he doesn't think he'd have spent more than he did on his tickets for the centennial celebration, he appreciates the city's effort to host the event. "It's nice to see Boca doing things to make the downtown they've built attractive," he said. Lily Onal, also a Boca Raton resident, plans to attend the concert with her husband and some friends. "I love that amphitheater," Onal said. "Anytime I get the opportunity to see any performance, I try to take advantage. And I love the idea of a big performer coming to Boca, because nine times out of 10, if you really want to see anyone big, you have to go to Miami or to Hollywood." Onal bought two tickets for about $300, before they were being resold. "I feel like we're lucky," she said. Onal, 43, has a daughter and a son, both under 8 years old. When it comes to taking them out to events like concerts, convenience plays a significant role in deciding where they'll go. "For the amphitheater, you can either just get an Uber or drive yourself and it's no big deal," Onal said. "It's right here. It's great for Boca residents. It gives us the opportunity to see someone pretty well known so easily and locally." Onal has lived in Boca Raton for the last three years. Before that, she'd lived in Fort Lauderdale. She said her family moved because they wanted to be in a safer, more kid-friendly environment with a city-feel. "It's great when you get things like Weezer coming," she said. "It makes you feel like you're living in more of a metropolitan city, and then you still get to live in this suburb where your kid goes to public school, where they're safe and they're getting a good education, and they're making nice friends, and they're surrounded by good people." The concert will be followed by a centennial celebration drone show May 25 at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with shows at 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Jasmine Fernández is a journalist covering Delray Beach and Boca Raton for The Palm Beach Post. Boys fancied my ‘hot mum' at school – I was spotty with braces and only got boyfriends thanks to her, says Danni Menzies

DESPITE being an awkward teen who didn't fit into the conventional idea of 'beauty', Danni Menzies always managed to bag boyfriends. But it was because her male school peers wanted to hang out with her 'hot mum', the 36-year-old revealed on Fabulous ' brand new vodcast, Date. Delete. Repeat. 6 6 6 Watch Date. Delete. Repeat. on YouTube and listen on all podcast providers now. 'The only people who would want to speak about my mum at school were all the boys," she revealed. "Because my mum was the 'hot mum'. 'She always wore her thong above her jeans when she would come and pick me up from school.' Danni added that, by contrast, she didn't fit in with traditional beauty standards during her school years. 'I had braces, I was spotty, I was fat,' she continued. 'And I'd get boyfriends because they'd just want to come home and hang out with my mum.' The schoolboy fascination with her mum was so extreme that her peers would change the lyrics of the 2003 tune Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne to fit 'Danni's mum'. The iconic pop song contains humorous lyrics about a young boy's crush on his friend Stacy's attractive mother. 'My mum is quite fit, to be fair,' Danni said in reflection. Alongside co-host Alex Serruys, 32, Danni is tackling all things love, sex and relationships on Fabulous' weekly vodcast, Date. Delete. Repeat. If you're not confident talking about tricky subjects, but are looking to improve, then this is the YouTube show for you. 'Alex and I have big personalities – we're very open, but she has a lot more sex than I do,' Danni said. 'In our vodcast, we'll be talking about everything from sex to me freezing my eggs, which I'm about to do for the second time. 'I used to worry about what people think, but life's too short. 'Just have fun, enjoy yourself and say whatever you want.' 6 6 6
