Elderly patient survives rare infection at city hosp
Patna: A 71-year-old man has been successfully treated for a rare and fast-spreading infection known as Fournier's Gangrene, following a high-risk emergency surgery at Medimax Hospital, Patna.
The life-saving procedure was led by senior gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeon, Dr Sanjeev Kumar.
The patient arrived at the hospital in an extremely critical condition, suffering from high fever, severe pain and a rapidly advancing infection. Following a comprehensive evaluation, doctors diagnosed him with Fournier's Gangrene, a life-threatening bacterial infection that affects the perineal region, including the area around the genitals and anus.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar said, "Considering the patient's age and comorbidities like diabetes, this was an extremely high-risk case. Timely surgery, debridement (removal of infected tissue), and continuous ICU monitoring played a crucial role in saving his life."
An emergency operation was carried out to remove the infected tissue. The patient was immediately shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU), administered strong intravenous antibiotics and kept under continuous observation. After two weeks of intensive care, he made a remarkable recovery and was discharged in a stable and healthy condition.
The medical team involved in the treatment included Dr Sukesh Kumar, Dr Arvind Kumar Aditya, Sujeet Upadhyay, nurses Khushboo, Sana and Mamata, as well as support staff Vikash and Mohit.
