Northwestern, North Carolina will provide local flavor to NCAA women's lacrosse title game in Foxborough

'We got it the night before our game and we've been wearing it ever since, so we thought it was right to wear it now,' said record-setting attack Madison Taylor. Though BC's season ended before the championship game for the first time since 2016, Sunday's title tilt between Northwestern and top-seeded North Carolina will have plenty for locals to root for. Four Wildcats have Massachusetts roots, including one of their defensive leaders, Cohasset's Jane Hansen, who has 44 caused turnovers this season (including two Friday.) Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up For Amonte Hiller, Hansen, and fellow Massachusetts natives Alex Blake (Medfield), Cara Nugent (Byfield), and Kate Keller (Newburyport), playing for a national championship at the home of the New England Patriots is meaningful. Advertisement 'This is pretty surreal, pretty exciting,' said Amonte Hiller. 'We didn't make it here the last time Foxborough hosted (in 2018). We're just so grateful to be here in the first place.' The Wildcats (19-2) won't settle for just an appearance, however, and thanks to the offensive capabilities of Taylor, a junior from Long Island, they stand a chance against the juggernaut that is undefeated North Carolina. Taylor has 154 points, and the national NCAA single-season goal record with 109. Advertisement North Carolina (21-0) has a talented scorer of its own in redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey, who scored seven goals in the The Tar Heels defense — what defender Sam Forrest calls a 'velociraptor defense' — is stifling. They have outshot opponents 773-466 and outscored them 372-143. With injuries leading to an early postseason exit for North Carolina last year, the three-time national champions are eager for a chance to win their first title since 2022. They are healthy and have plenty of new players, including Andover's Haley Carver, who want to return to the top. 'We have one more game and we are going to give it everything that we have,' said Humphrey. 'This team, I'm telling you, has a lot to give.' A large crowd should be on hand to see the duel between North Carolina and Northwestern. Friday's semifinals brought 10,080 fans to Gillette, the highest total for the women's tournament since 2022. Sunday should be even better despite BC's absence. Much of that is thanks to the legacy the Eagles have established through their consistency and style of play. 'I think the girls in our program play the right way,' said BC coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein. 'They play unselfishly. They play really gritty. They play really tough, and I think they have captured the hearts of a lot of young lacrosse players. Advertisement 'The game is electric and the game is fun to watch, and I think we've captured a lot of fans.' Interest in women's lacrosse has always run high in Massachusetts, thanks to the quality of high school and club programs, but BC's run to the last eight Final Fours spurred on a new generation of lacrosse players and fans who will fill the stands on Sunday. Amonte Hiller is pleased that her team will be who they watch. 'I think it brings a lot of attention to our sport at a critical time in college athletics,' said Amonte Hiller. 'I'm just really grateful to be a part of it in my hometown.'

High-profile players excel at recent Bowls SA Women's Open

This past weekend, Championship Sunday at the Bowls SA Women's Open didn't disappoint once again as the leading players battled their way into contention with the hopes of being crowned South Africa's best for 2025. South Africa's newest Open Singles champion is Bridget Herselman, who took some time off on Mother's Day to edge 21 year old Leila Snyman in a true spectacle of a finale. Herselman,, herself only 27 and a mom of little one, rose to the occasion in a match that looked like it could go either way throughout the contest. Eventually, it was Herselman who managed to prevail in the race to 21. Snyman showed her good form once more in the final and was up at the halfway stage but quite never far enough to make Herselman doubt her drawing abilities. Herselman, who has been something of a stalwart in the national setup, will now get to test her skills in the World Champion of Champions after finally relegating her young opponent 21-18. Another top South African performer Anneke Scheepers managed to ensure another gold medal return. Scheepers was eliminated by Snyman in the last eight of the Singles and lost in the semi-finals as a skip in the Fours leaving her Pairs campaign as her last chance. A 24-7 win over Esme Kruger and Lara York laid the platform for a resounding 27-6 over Claire Cowan and Elma Louw – ironically, the remaining members of Scheepers and pairs partner Megan Ferreira's Fours side. Those big wins sent Scheepers and Ferreira into the final full of confidence and it showed on the greens at Dellville Germiston as a comfortable 22-14 win followed in the final. Anneke Scheepers and Megan Ferreira won the Pairs title Remarkably, the Women's Fours final featured the two teams that faced off for gold last year. And once again, it the team skipped by Tracy Meyeridricks with Taz Bright at third and Charlotte Rossouw and Colleen Marshall in the front that managed to be the last team standing after a 22-18 win over South African international Esme Kruger and her team of Lara York, Ina and Rolinda Fourie. Ina Fourie replaced Nan Roos in the only change to the silver medallists. The attention now turns to Port Elizabeth as the Men's competition begins on Saturday, 17 May. Women's Fours Gold: Meyeridricks, T / Bright, Taz / Rossouw, Charlotte / Marshall, Colleen (Sedibeng Rolbal/Bowls / Henley on Klip) Silver: Kruger, Esmé / York, Lara / Fourie, Ina / Fourie, Rolinda (Eden Bowls / Hartenbos) Women's Open Singles Gold: Herselman, Bridget (Sables Bowling Association / Leases) Silver: Snyman, Leila (Sables Bowling Association / Krugersdorp) Women's Pairs Gold: Scheepers, Anneke / Ferreira, Megan (Western Province Bowling Association / Goodwood) Silver: Mostert, C / Gardiner, Verinia (Ekurhuleni Bowls / Benoni) Women's Veteran Singles Gold: Pretorius, Denise (Bowls Gauteng North / PHSOB) Silver: Mills, Cherry-Ann (Ekurhuleni Bowls / The Lake) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. ASN 2024: Sportswoman Award Burnishes Nor Farah's Mettle For 2026 Commonwealth Games

PETALING JAYA, May 13 (Bernama) -- The ground-breaking success of being crowned Sportswoman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards (ASN) has fuelled the spirit of national lawn bowler Nor Farah Ain Abdullah for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Nor Farah said it will be no walk in the park to Glasgow as she has to first jostle for a place at the quadrennial games with other senior lawn bowlers. 'My biggest target is to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games but I have to compete against my seniors first,' she said after the 2024 ASN here today. bootstrap slideshow After rising to prominence in 2024 with the Fours gold medal at the 15th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship (Pattaya, Thailand), the world number one made history by becoming the first lawn bowler to win the National Sportswoman trophy. Nor Farah, who is resting after sustaining a right shoulder injury, hopes to return to action at the 2025 Hong Kong International Lawn Bowls Classic scheduled for this November. Commenting on the award she received today, Nor Farah described it as the biggest achievement in her career and thanked Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation, notably president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, and the National Sports Council for the strong support given to her and the sport of lawn bowling all these years. Nor Farah stole the limelight after winning the women's singles gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships at Guernsey, Channel Islands, in April last year. Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, who received the Sportsman of the Year Award on behalf of national men's doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, said the recognition received by the 2022 world doubles champions was the highest honour for badminton in the country. Kenny hopes that the success will motivate not just Aaron-Wooi Yik but also other shuttlers to produce excellent results and bring glory to the country on the world stage.

Top-30 recruit Acaden Lewis, former Kentucky signee, commits to Villanova

Top-30 recruit Acaden Lewis, former Kentucky signee, commits to Villanova Show Caption Hide Caption Mark Pope on return of Kentucky-Indiana basketball rivalry Kentucky men's basketball coach Mark Pope said "I love everything about" the Kentucky-Indiana basketball rivalry returning for the 2025-26 NCAA season. One of the top guards in the 2025 men's college basketball recruiting class has traded one group of wildcats for another. Acaden Lewis, a four-star guard who had previously signed with Kentucky, has committed to Villanova, he told ESPN Thursday. The 6-foot-2 Lewis is rated by 247Sports' Composite ranking as the No. 29 prospect nationally and the No. 5 point guard in the 2025 recruiting class. Prior to Thursday, he was the highest-ranked player not currently committed to or signed with a school. REQUIRED READING: 5-star CG Darius Adams commits to Buzz Williams, Maryland basketball's 2025 class He becomes the third member of Villanova's 2025 recruiting class, all of whom have committed to the Wildcats since new coach Kevin Willard was hired. Lewis is the highest-rated player of that group and is Villanova's first top-30 commitment in three years. Prior to his commitment, Lewis had also taken visits to St. John's, Georgia and Miami over the past two weeks. "The staff I ultimately had the most trust in was Nova," Lewis said to ESPN. "We built a relationship since my sophomore year, when I first transferred to Sidwell (Friends School in Washington, D.C.). Kevin Willard and his staff were among the first high-major coaches to recruit me at Maryland. I have built a great relationship with them and have immense trust that I will thrive and they will let me be me." Lewis had previously committed to Kentucky and coach Mark Pope last November and signed with the Wildcats 12 days later. He decommitted from Kentucky on April 10, five days after the Wildcats landed a commitment from Pitt transfer point guard Jaland Lowe. Villanova, which won two national championships and made three Final Fours between 2016-22, has turned to Willard, who most recently guided Maryland to the Sweet 16, to get the program back to national relevance. Kyle Neptune, who succeeded Jay Wright after the legendary coach retired in 2022, went just 54-47 in three years before being fired in March after his final Wildcats team went 19-14 and failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for a third-consecutive season.
