Fox unveils new product for the cordless community
The NFL has never been more popular than it is right now. Interest in the game has expanded past the product on the field as, thanks to social media, athletes have become bigger celebrities in their own right. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Ancillary events like the NFL draft have become must-see television. This year, nearly 14 million people tuned into the opening night of the NFL draft. For comparison, a recent NBA Playoffs game between the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves averaged 4.96 million viewers. Related: Comcast spends big bucks to bring back an NBA legend While Netflix has emerged as the early winner of the streaming wars, legacy media companies have begun to fight back. Disney (DIS) launched Disney+ years ago, but relative newcomers like Paramount+ from CBS Viacom (PARA) and Peacock from Comcast NBCUniversal (CMCSA) show that broadcasters are not ready to concede U.S. eyeballs to Netflix. During its earnings call this week, Comcast admitted that sports are the key to unlocking Peacock's future. NBC pays the NFL $2 billion annually for the right to broadcast games. It pays the Premier League another $450 million annually and billions more for the rights to the Olympics every two years. Fox (FOXA) , the last of the four major broadcast networks, is launching its own streaming product this fall, and like its rivals, the company will rely heavily on sports to drive subs. Image source: Brown/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images This week Fox Corp. let the investment community know its streaming plans when it revealed that Fox One will debut in the fall ahead of the start of the NFL season in September. Fox One will include programming from Fox News, Fox Sports, and other programming from what is left of Fox's broadcast business. The company did not say how much the service will cost, but it did emphasize that the service will not be designed to cannibalize Fox News, which is by far cable's most-watched news network. Related: Fox News gets huge 'bump' from a wave of surprising viewers "We do not want to lose a traditional cable subscriber to Fox One," said CEO Lachlan Murdoch. Instead, Fox One will be aimed at the "cordless community" that has eschewed buying a cable package. Fox will look to form partnerships to bundle Fox One with other streamers. Fox reported a third quarter profit of $346 million, or 75 cents per share, a steep decline from the $666 million, or $1.40 per share, the company made a year ago. On an adjusted basis, Fox made $1.10 per share in the quarter. Much of that decline in profit was due to higher expenses as revenue rose 27% in the quarter to $4.37 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of 92 cents per share on revenue of $4.19 billion. Much of the gains were driven by its cable news division - Fox News, Fox Business, and Fox Sports 1. But the reason for the dip in profit was that Fox hosted the Super Bowl this year. Fox saw its operating costs jump 45% in the first quarter thanks to the big game. And while Fox was able to charge as much as $8 million for a 30-second ad during the game, there are still major costs to putting on the show, on top of the $2.2 billion Fox pays the NFL annually for the games. Fox was able to generate a record $800 million in ad revenue for Super Bowl LIX. Fox also reported higher expenses for digital content and marketing. Overhead expenses jumped 8% in the quarter. Fox to Launch New Streaming Service, Fox One, This Fall
Fox Corp. revealed new details about its streaming service on Monday, including that it would debut this fall and would be called Fox One. The announcement came ahead of the company's upfront, an annual pitch to entice advertisers with a slate of upcoming shows. Lachlan Murdoch, the company's chief executive and son of the Fox Corp. founder, Rupert Murdoch, previewed the service on a quarterly earnings call. The name Fox One, he said, was a reference to the combined heft of the company's TV shows, cable channels and broadcast network, including National Football League games. 'Whether it's the Super Bowl, the election cycle or the upfront, our company is at its best when we work together as one,' Mr. Murdoch said. Mr. Murdoch did not say how much Fox would charge viewers, only that it would not be less than what its cable subscribers pay. Unlike Disney or Warner Bros. Discovery, which have put paid streaming services at the center of their businesses, Fox Corp. has until now adopted a more piecemeal approach. The company, which owns the Fox News cable channel and the Fox broadcasting network, operates the Fox Nation streaming service and Tubi, a free ad-supported service with TV shows and movies. The Fox Nation streaming service will continue to exist as a stand-alone product within Fox Corporation, but Fox One subscribers will be able to bundle their subscriptions with Fox Nation. Mr. Murdoch also said that Fox had been approached by operators of other streaming services about offering a bundled subscription, though he did not identify them. Fox recently announced plans to team up with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery on a sports-focused streaming service called Venu. That service was canceled before it got off the ground amid legal challenges. Like Venu, Fox One is meant to coexist with the company's lucrative traditional TV business. In his remarks, Mr. Murdoch said that the service was aimed at the 'cordless' market, referring to viewers who do not have a pay-TV subscription. Traditional cable customers who already have access to Fox channels will be able to get Fox One free of charge. 'It would be a failure if we attract more connected subscribers,' Mr. Murdoch said, adding, 'We do not want to lose a traditional cable subscriber to Fox One.'

Fox One streaming service just announced — here's when it's launching and what's included
Fox will be releasing its own steaming service, dubbed Fox One, and it should debut in time before the start of the NFL season kicks offs in September. Fox owns a multitude of channels, and Fox One will be a hub for all those services including Fox Sports, Fox news programing and its TV shows. "FOX One is designed to reach outside of the pay-TV bundle and deliver all the best FOX branded content directly to viewers wherever they are," the CEO of Fox One, Pete Distad said in a press release. In a Variety report, CEO Lachlan Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch said Fox One would be "'holistic of all of our content, sports and news" that is needed to reach "a large population outside the cable bundle." Fox hasn't listed everything that will be available on Fox One but here's a list of channels that will have content on the streamer: The big draw for most people who pick up the service will be all of the sports channels, especially since Fox offers a lot of NFL games and the Big Ten NCAA conference, which stretches from coast to coast now. Fox Sports also broadcasts some MLB games and LIV Golf events. Between this new service and the recently announced update to the ESPN streamer from Disney, it's clear that this a fallout from demise of Venu Sports, which was supposed to combine sports offerings from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. That plan was scuttled in January. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. As for Fox One's price, there is still no information about the potential monthly cost for Fox One. In February, Murdoch said that it would be "modest" and that Fox would "price the service accordingly." Today, in the Variety report, he said that Fox has "modest" expectations for the service and that the cost will be "relatively low." Disney hasn't announced pricing for the updated ESPN yet, but for comparison DirectTV's MySports starts at $69 a month. YouTubeTV, which airs Fox Sports and other sports channels with its multiview option, will run you $82 a month, and that's before adding on packages for the MLB or NFL. Anything lower than those prices would be a boon, though you'd be locked to Fox's offerings. The Fox announcement did not give a specific launch date but did say that it is "on track" to launch before the NFL and College football seasons. The NFL kicks off on September 4 this year, while "Week Zero" starts on August 23 for college football. So, we expect Fox One will likely launch in early or mid-August.
