Crufts 2025: Dog show's youngest ever handler wins rosette

Crufts is one of the biggest and most prestigious dog shows in the world, but that didn't seem to worry six-year-old Freddie and his furry best friend Penny. The pair picked up the top prize in the veteran female contest with his eight-year-old smooth-haired Fox Terrier. The competition, which takes place every year in Birmingham, sees over 20,000 dogs step onto the iconic green carpet to show off for dog experts and judges. Freddie says he loves taking part in dog shows, especially with his best pal, Penny. He was given special permission to miss school for the day. He told journalists that Penny shows her love by giving him licks and sitting on his lap, and cuddles. "I like going for walks with her as they are fun and get you fresh air. But I like doing the dog shows and getting prizes and rosettes," he added. Crufts is a latest in a long line of dog shows Freddie and Penny have taken part in. But it certainly is the biggest! So how is he going to celebrate his win? With waffles and ice cream, of course! What is Crufts all about? Crufts is not just a chance for owners and breeders to show off their pampered pooches. Other events include the super fast team game, flyball, where a team of dogs must race against opponents to grab and carry balls back to their handlers. There are also agility competitions, where dogs must complete a sort of obstacle course in super quick time. And there's the entertaining heelwork to music contest, where dogs show off their twinkle paws in a series of "dance" moves. Plus, heart-warming stories of heroic dogs who go above and beyond for owners or their community. And of course, the biggest honour - Best in Show - best dog overall - which comes with a cash prize and trophy. More than 200 pedigree breeds will compete for that title, awarded on Sunday.
