Strong geomagnetic storm underway with dazzling Northern Lights possible in these states Thursday

BOULDER, Colo. – An ongoing strong geomagnetic storm from the Sun created displays of Northern Lights across parts of the U.s. overnight into Thursday. NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center said strong (G3) geomagnetic storm levels were reached early Thursday based on NOAA's five-level scale. The solar storm is happening in response to influences from a negative-polarity coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). A coronal hole appears like a dark void in the Sun because these areas contain cooler, less dense plasma. This allows the material to stream out at faster speeds and sometimes send impacts to Earth, which is what is happening this week. Northern Lights Show Surprises Nasa Astronaut On Iss NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory images of the Sun show a large coronal hole on the Sun. These influences from the Sun create dazzling displays of Northern Lights as particles interact with Earth's atmosphere. Overnight into Thursday, skygazers in Alaska, Canada and parts of the northern U.S., including Michigan, were treated to a colorful show. As these influences from the CH HSS continue, the SWPC has issued a Level-3-out-of-5 Geomagnetic Storm Warning through Thursday. While the peak intensity of the aurora lights occurred between midnight and 3 a.m. ET on Thursday, there is still some opportunity for the Northern Lights on Thursday night and early Friday. Moderate geomagnetic storming is forecast to continue on Friday. Under these conditions, aurora lights could be visible across the northern tier and Upper Midwest through early Friday morning in places such as Michigan and Maine. This week's conditions are expected to cause minor power grid fluctuations and a slight risk to satellite operations. Intermittent GPS degradation is also possible, according to the article source: Strong geomagnetic storm underway with dazzling Northern Lights possible in these states Thursday

Bear falls through ceiling of Kentucky home after climbing ladder, squeezing into attic

BELL COUNTY, Ky. – A family in Kentucky received an unusual wake-up call last week after a bear came crashing through the ceiling of their home and landed inside the kitchen. There's something you don't see every day. How To Watch Fox Weather According to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement, Game Warden Derick Creech responded to reports of a black bear inside the Bell County home around 5 a.m. on May 21. When he arrived, he found the animal sitting on the stove inside the kitchen. Creech and a Bell County Sheriff's Deputy were eventually able to run the bear out of the home through an open door. Memorial Day storm threat grows as millions head home after busy holiday weekend

Tens of millions of people from the Plains to the Southeast will again be at risk of severe weather on Monday, which could halt travel back home after the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Those regions have been relentlessly slammed with extreme weather for days, with damage to buildings reported in Oklahoma, water rescues and flooding in Missouri and thunderstorms tearing across communities in Florida on Saturday. And on Sunday, massive DVD-sized hail fell in Texas when an intense storm raced across the Afton area. How To Watch Fox Weather Rain and thunderstorms were ongoing on Monday morning, but the main event is expected during the afternoon and evening hours. The FOX Forecast Center said that as temperatures climb throughout the day, the atmosphere will become increasingly unstable across portions of Central Texas. This could allow for supercell thunderstorms across Central and West Texas, with lines or clusters of storms into northeastern Texas. Download The Free Fox Weather App NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) placed the region in a Level 3 threat on its 5-point severe thunderstorm risk scale. This includes cities such as Abilene, Killeen, San Angelo, Copperas Cove and Kerrville. A Level 2 out of 5 threat extends from Texas to Louisiana and includes more than 7 million people in cities like San Antonio, Austin, Waco and Tyler in Texas, as well as Shreveport in Louisiana. A Level 1 threat stretches from Colorado and New Mexico to Georgia and South Carolina. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the main threats from storms that develop, but some tornadoes cannot be ruled article source: Memorial Day storm threat grows as millions head home after busy holiday weekend

Rare May nor'easter pounds Northeast with powerful winds, soaking rain ahead of holiday weekend

A powerful, late-season nor'easter is slamming portions of the Northeast with driving rain, strong northeast winds. The heaviest rainfall, totaling 1 to 2 inches with locally higher amounts, is expected. Strong winds could impact Memorial Day travel for millions. Heavy snow in the White Mountains is expected to bring dangerous hiking conditions. BOSTON – A rare May nor'easter is sweeping across the Northeast on Thursday, bringing cool, windswept rain to millions hoping to get an early jump on Memorial Day weekend travel. A nor'easter doesn't need snow to fall. It's simply an area of low pressure with strong northeasterly winds off the Atlantic Ocean. How To Watch Fox Weather Two areas of low pressure — one across the interior and another formed off the mid-Atlantic coast — are causing misery. The interior low-pressure system already packed a punch in western Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening as a line of severe thunderstorms rolled through the Pittsburgh area, prompting a Tornado Watch and a few radar-indicated Tornado Warnings. There haven't been any reports of tornado touchdowns, but the storms brought some heavy rain that led to flooding in Pittsburgh. Download The Free Fox Weather App The coastal low-pressure system is taking shape south of Long Island in New York. The low is expected to continue to strengthen and peak in intensity later on Thursday afternoon. It's expected to bring steady, sometimes heavy rain from the Tri-State area up through New England. Rain totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches, with some locally higher amounts in elevated terrain and along the Northeast and New England coasts. Flash flooding is also a possibility, and the Weather Prediction Center has placed portions of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire under a Level 1 out of 4 threat. Wind will also be a problem, especially from eastern Long Island up through the New England coast. Wind gusts higher than 40 mph are likely, with some gusts expected to exceed 55 mph. While winds of that strength likely won't take down too many trees, there could be delays at major airports across the region, especially in Boston. Wind alerts have been posted for much of the New England coast through Friday morning. Strong winds could also cause issues at the beach. While astronomical tides are not particularly high, a 1.5 to 2.5-foot water rise is still possible. If that occurs, minor coastal flooding could be a concern. Coastal Flood Advisories are also in effect for portions of the Northeast and New England. In the highest peaks of the White Mountains, the nor'easter will pull in enough cool air to produce off-season snow accumulation, mainly above 1,500 feet. The heaviest amounts of snow will be on peaks above 3,000 feet in the Presidential Range, including Mount Washington in New article source: Rare May nor'easter pounds Northeast with powerful winds, soaking rain ahead of holiday weekend
