Watch: Construction workers rescued after falling 60 feet into empty water tower
TAHOLAH, Wash. – Four construction workers were rescued on Tuesday after they fell 60 feet through the roof of a large, empty water tower under construction in western Washington and were left unable to walk. Two rescue swimmers were first deployed via U.S. Coast Guard helicopter into the water tank near Taholah, along the Washington coast. They then used a rescue basket to hoist the injured men into the aircraft one at a time. Video from the USCG shows rescue crews hoisting one of the men into a helicopter as he laid on a stretcher. All four men were transported to medics on the scene, who then flew the injured by medical helicopter to a local hospital. See it: Kangaroo among those rescued during Australia floods from Tropical Cyclone Alfred
BRISBANE, Australia – A kangaroo was among the rescued after Tropical Cyclone Alfred recently battered Australia, producing heavy rains and flash flooding along the coast. The storm had churned off the coast of the northeast Australian state of Queensland for weeks before then moving onto land Friday with plenty of moisture. Peak rainfall totals over a 7-day period reached as high as 28-45 inches, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. Flooding devastated many areas, trapping residents across the region and leading to multiple rescues, as shown by photos and videos shared by the Queensland Fire Department. One of those rescues involved a kangaroo named "Skippy," who the QFD said was stuck in a flooded culvert in the town of Munruben just south of Brisbane. "Three firefighters managed to rescue the 'roo from the water, and it was left in the hands of animal carers, who oversaw the entire operation to make sure things didn't get too stressful for poor old Skip," officials with the QFD said. They shared a photo on Monday of the kangaroo, as he was cradled in a blanket by one of his rescuers. Photos of their rescue show the pups riding in a bright red and yellow inflatable boat as they were being evacuated. "The dogs were 'pawfect' passengers and had their tails wagging as they were brought safely back to dry land," noted the QFD. Fire crews were also called out to help humans whose vehicles became stuck in floodwaters. Drone video shows individuals sitting or standing on top of their trucks, as murky brown floodwaters rushed around their partially submerged vehicles. Winter storm threatens 10 million with severe weather as strong tornadoes, damaging wind possible
The winter storm bringing heavy snow and ice to parts of the Midwest will also bring the threat of severe weather to parts of the South and Southeast on Wednesday. Wednesday's threat of severe weather includes the potential for strong tornadoes and damaging wind. The area of greatest concern covers large portions of southern Mississippi and Alabama from Hattiesburg to Montgomery, which has been raised to a Level 3 out of 5 threat. A wider threat area of severe storms stretches from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Atlanta. While the focus will be on any severe weather, heavy rain and flash flooding will also be a concern for additional places in the Southeast. Chicago Faces Biggest Snowstorm Of Season As High-impact Winter Storm Unleashes Thundersnow, Ice In Midwest According to the FOX Forecast Center, the first round of thunderstorms and heavy rain will move across Louisiana and Mississippi. In the afternoon, these storms might get strong enough to bring damaging winds and even strong tornadoes across central and southern Mississippi and Alabama. Another round of thunderstorms is expected in the same areas during the evening and overnight. A Tornado Watch is in effect for several Southern Louisiana parishes and Southern Mississippi counties until 8 p.m. local time Wednesday. The strength of these storms will depend on how many develop earlier in the afternoon. Greater storm coverage would deplete atmospheric energy and reduce the nighttime threat, according to the FOX Forecast Center. The severe weather threat lessens heading into Thursday morning, with southern Alabama, southwest Georgia and the Florida panhandle around Tallahassee, being the areas of greatest concern. Possible Tornado Leaves 3 Hurt, Buildings Damaged Along Florida Panhandle Heavy rain fell on Tuesday from Texas to North Carolina.
