Joseph Cress/For the Register / USA TODAY NETWORK Learning that Fran, the program's longest-tenured coach, was no longer employed by Iowa after 15 years was devastating news for the entire family. Connor's father, however, didn't stay unemployed long. The University of Pennsylvania, Fran's alma mater, hired him to be the head coach of the Quakers men's basketball team last month. Advertisement While Connor's parents prepare to relocate to Philadelphia, his littler sister, Marit McCaffery, is celebrating her graduation from Iowa -- a bittersweet moment for the political science major. Marit posted numerous photos in cap and gown on Instagram and wrote, "the past 15 years in iowa city couldn't have ended worse so, thanks iowa!" Clark gave the post a like while Connor commented, "OG caption." Marit and Connor's brother, Patrick McCaffery added, "we fw that QUAKE SHOWWWW." Penn hires former Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery

Penn hires former Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery Former Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery has his landing spot. Penn announced the hiring of McCaffery as its next head men's basketball coach, bringing McCaffery back to his alma mater. It confirms the Wednesday report from The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman. McCaffery takes over a Penn program that finished 8-19 (4-10 Ivy League) last season. The Quakers fired Steve Donahue earlier this month after his ninth season on the job. "I am excited and honored to return to my alma mater and the city of Philadelphia to lead the Penn men's basketball program," McCaffery said. "It is a program that I have fond memories of from my previous time there as a student-athlete and assistant coach. My vision is to return Penn to prominence in the Ivy League and beyond and bring an exciting style of play to The Palestra. I want to thank President Larry Jameson, AD Alanna Wren, Provost John Jackson and Senior Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli for providing me with this opportunity to return home. I relish the challenge and look forward to getting started." During his three-year playing career at Penn, the Quakers posted a 36-6 Ivy League record and McCaffery led the Ivy League in assists (105) and steals (51) as a senior in 1981-82. McCaffery was fired this month by Iowa after the Hawkeyes finished 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten) and missed the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. The 65-year-old departed Iowa City as the Hawkeyes' all-time wins leader, though, boasting a mark of 297-207 (143-141 Big Ten). McCaffery led Iowa to seven NCAA Tournament appearances and to the 2022 Big Ten Tournament championship. Prior to his time at Iowa, McCaffery served as the head coach at Lehigh (1985-88), UNC Greensboro (1999-05) and Siena (2005-10). McCaffery also worked as an assistant coach at Notre Dame from 1988-99. McCaffery brings an all-time head coaching mark of 548-384 with 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. McCaffery's hiring at Penn does not alter the contract buyout for Iowa. The Des Moines Register's Chad Leistikow reported that McCaffery's contract extension with Iowa in 2021 did not include a reduction clause.

Former Iowa coach Fran McCaffery hired at Penn, his alma mater, after split with Hawkeyes

Fran McCaffery is headed back to his alma mater after his split in Iowa City. The longtime Hawkeyes coach, who was fired after 15 seasons with the program earlier this month , struck a deal to take over at Penn on Thursday, the university announced. McCaffery will replace Steve Donahue at the Ivy League school . Donahue was fired earlier this month, too, after the Quakers went just 8-19 this season. He reached the NCAA tournament just once in his nine seasons with the program, which is Penn's only NCAA tournament appearance in the last 17 years. "I am excited and honored to return to my alma mater and the city of Philadelphia to lead the Penn men's basketball program," McCaffery said in a statement . "It is a program that I have fond memories of from my previous time there as a student-athlete and assistant coach. 'My vision is to return Penn to prominence in the Ivy League and beyond and bring an exciting style of play to The Palestra … I relish the challenge and look forward to getting started." Advertisement McCaffery, 65, racked up a 297-206 record over his 15 seasons at Iowa, which was his first head coaching job at a Power 5 school. The Hawkeyes never made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament under his watch, however, and they went just 16-15 this season while missing the tournament completely. He was known for his frequent sideline outbursts , too, and was actually ejected from his final game for screaming at officials in the Big Ten tournament. Iowa has since hired Drake head coach Ben McCollum to replace McCaffery. McCaffery played at Penn for three seasons from 1979-1982, and he led the Ivy League in both assists and steals during his senior season — which earned him the nickname 'White Magic.' They won the conference championship in all three of his seasons, and he played in the NCAA tournament twice. He also spent time as an assistant with the Quakers before launching into his coaching career, which included stops at Lehigh, UNC Greensboro and Siena.
