France suspects murder in stabbing of British woman

Karen Carter, who played for the local "Queens of Football" team amongst many local activities, was murdered in the southern village of Tremolat last week. A man, with whom Carter had been in a relationship for several weeks, called police after he found her body next to her car late on April 28, prosecutors have said. Police initially detained the man, but rapidly released him again saying there were no "suspicious elements against him". They then detained a 69-year-old woman from Tremolat who had been friends with Carter, but freed her after checking her movements on the day of the murder. Advertisement Carter suffered eight stabs wounds of "particular violence", investigators said Wednesday as they announced that an investigating magistrate had been appointed to look into the murder. The "Queens of Football" on Saturday held a minute of silence for their former player, the group said on its Facebook page. One player described Carter as a person who "loved life", and had only just returned from South Africa where she and others played in the "Grannies World Cup" in April. Joelle Mayer, who played for the team, told AFP that the British woman was an active member of the community in the village of some 600 inhabitants. "She was a charming, serene woman who loved life. She was always smiling and much loved here," she said. "We're all in shock." She said Carter always joined local initiatives and last year was among players on the team to strip naked for a jokey calendar to raise funds for the trip to South Africa. An online sample of the 2025 "Queens of Football" calendar, which went on sale in October, shows black and white pictures of the players in which their faces cannot be seen. But, said Mayer, Carter did not speak much about her private life. On that, "she was also secretive and guarded," she said. Her husband Alan, who lives in South Africa, told France Bleu radio that he learnt about the death through a cousin. He said he and his wife and he were not divorcing but going through a tough period. The couple had two sons and two daughters in their twenties and thirties, leading their own lives in Britain, the United States and Australia, he said. He said he and his wife decided to buy a cottage in Tremolat after spending a holiday there 15 years ago.

British woman beaten to death at home in France

A British woman has been beaten to death at her home in southwestern France. A friend found the 65-year-old woman lying injured near her vehicle on Tuesday evening, Sylvie Martins-Guedes, a state prosecutor, said on Wednesday. She had five deep wounds caused by a blunt object. Despite attempts to resuscitate her, the woman died at the scene, the prosecutor said, adding that authorities had opened a murder investigation. 'Her wounds indicated a particularly violent attack and their locations showed an intention to kill,' Ms Martins-Guedes said. 'Investigations are under way to identify and detain the perpetrator of this crime.' The woman's home is in the village of Trémolat in the Dordogne region, about 70 miles east of Bordeaux. She had lived in the Dordogne department for several years. Franceinfo reported that initial investigations found that the woman had been with a friend on the night of her death 'with whom she had been in a relationship for several weeks'. Victim was member of football team They had spent the evening together in Trémolat, but she returned home around 10 minutes before her friend, the outlet said. Upon arriving at the scene, the man called for help before administering first aid himself before emergency services arrived. 'Despite the resuscitation measures provided by first responders and emergency services, the victim died,' Ms Martins-Guedes said. The friend is not in custody, French media reported. The woman, who has not yet been named, was a member of an over-50s football team that competed in the Soccer Grannies World Cup in South Africa earlier this year, according to French news outlet France Bleu. Her teammates shared their shock at the news with the publication, saying that the 65-year-old was a generous woman who was always willing to help others.

Joel Le Scouarnec: Surgeon accused of sexually abusing 299 patients over 25 years to stand trial

A former surgeon who allegedly raped and abused hundreds of young patients, many of whom were under anaesthetic, will be the subject of France's largest-ever child abuse trial later this month. Joel Le Scouarnec, 73, a once-respected surgeon who worked in regions across France, stands accused of assaulting or raping 299 people in a 25-year reign of terror, usually targeting his child patients while working in Brittany. The surgeon is accused of detailing his rapes and assaults – and naming his victims – in depraved diaries discovered when his home was searched in 2017. Le Scouarnec has admitted to some but not all charges in the upcoming trial in Vannes, northwest France. In 2020, he was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for the rape and sexual assault of four minors – including two of his nieces. In May 2017, Le Scouarnec was brought to the attention of French authorities for the first time after his six-year-old neighbour in Jonzac, southwestern France, told her mother that Le Scouarnec exposed himself and molested her over the fence. A thorough search of Le Scouarnec's home followed, revealing twisted insight into the alleged mass rapist's mind. Officers discovered detailed diaries chronologically listing and naming his victims over decades, disclosing the assaults which he had allegedly committed or wanted to commit across the several hospitals he had worked in, including in Loches, Vannes, Lorient, Quimperlé, and Jonzac. Police also found 300,000 images of child abuse images and pornography as they searched his home. Le Scouarnec has claimed his diaries, which in multiple cases stated 'I am a paedophile', only detailed his 'fantasies'. The indictment brought forward by the public prosecutor of Lorient, in Brittany, says the doctor felt 'omnipotent' and was 'flirting with danger' in a 'calculated manner' as he allegedly carried out 300 acts against 299 people, French outlet Le Monde reported. Le Scouarnec's strategy was to pass off his sexual violence as a professional gesture and target patients so young that they wouldn't remember or understand what was happening, investigators said. He would take advantage of children as soon as he was alone with them in the hospital room, they added. But the doctor would allegedly also target older children in the operating room, often when they were asleep or under anaesthesia, his diaries state. While some of his former patients have said they remember the surgeon touching them, many have no recollection of the assault as they were under anaesthetic when he abused them, the BBC reported. These victims were contacted by police and told that their names, alongside graphic descriptions of how they were abused, appeared in Le Scouarnec's diaries. Marie, one of the alleged victims who was assaulted in 1996 in the Sacré-Cœur clinic in Vannes, told France Bleu that she is 'apprehensive' about the trial. 'On the one hand, it has to be settled so that we can move on once and for all. But when we talk about Le Scouarnec, there are images that come back to me over and over again,' the mother-of-three, who was 10 at the time and is now 38, told the outlet. Marie says Le Scouarnec came to see her while she was alone in a hospital room. 'Not having any knowledge of sexuality at that age, it went unnoticed,' she said. 'But my body remembered it very well. I have trauma from that rape. My body is blocked, it no longer trusts.' Le Scouarnec faces more than 100 charges of rape and 150 of sexual assault at the trial due to start this month.

French customs seize Moroccan dinosaur fossils

Customs officers in Menton, southern France, made an unexpected discovery: fossilized dinosaur and crocodile teeth originating from Morocco's rich geological deposits, as reported by France Bleu. On January 27, customs agents conducted a routine inspection of a Spanish freight truck heading to Italy. Among the various packages, they found several bags containing fossilized teeth, a find that left the officers astonished. «Our teams are accustomed to intercepting drugs, not fossils millions of years old», remarked Samantha Verduron, communications director for Nice customs. The officers uncovered nine teeth, which were subsequently handed over to Pierre-Elie Moullé, a paleontologist at the Regional Prehistory Museum in Menton. Upon examination, Moullé identified the fossils as hailing from Morocco. The collection included a tooth from Zarafasaura oceanis, a marine plesiosaur, three mosasaur teeth, and five attributed to Dyrosaurus phosphaticus, a prehistoric aquatic reptile. «These fossils come from Morocco, where an illegal trade is organized around these rare pieces, often resold at a high price», the paleontologist explained. Morocco, with its extensive paleontological deposits, particularly in the Khouribga region and the Sahara Desert, is a prime target for traffickers. The illegal trade in cultural goods is estimated to generate between three and six billion dollars annually, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Besides fossils, customs officers frequently intercept antique objects, ancient manuscripts, and statues. An investigation is currently underway to identify the intended recipients of these fossils and to determine the appropriate legal actions in this case.
