Why Frances Anderson Stepped Away From Acting After Modern Family

Originally appeared on E! Online Frances Anderson was looking forward to a modern teenage experience. So when Modern Family ended after 11 seasons in 2020, the actress—who played Lily on the hit ABC sitcom—knew it was time to try life as a normal teenager after years on set. "I was homeschooled while filming Modern Family, which ended when I was 12," Frances told E! News' Francesca Amiker in an exclusive interview. "I decided to take time off from acting to go to school, be with kids my age, and find myself." And while the 18-year-old is currently focused on music—opting to go by her middle name instead of the birth name Aubrey Anderson-Emmons she used as a child star—she isn't ditching life in front of the camera forever. "I plan to act again," Frances noted, "but the break was exactly what I needed." But the break didn't exactly provide her with the most normal teenage years as her return to school coincided with the pandemic. More from E! 'So I went from a major TV show to lockdown. Eventually, I enrolled in a public school with 4,000 students—very overwhelming! People recognized me, and it was a lot. I ended up switching schools and found a place that fit me better." Now, Frances is shifting back into the public eye, this time as a singer-songwriter, whose EP Drown released August 8. 'A lot of my music is inspired from stuff when I was younger, when I was a kid,' she explained. 'A lot about what my experiences were like in high school, and I hope that people find it relatable.' As for why she decided to release her music under a different name? For her it was really quite simple. "I wanted to switch it up and I wanted people to see a new side of me," Frances said. "And I wanted to create a space specifically just for music. And I'm so excited for everybody to hear the songs on the EP, and I'm so grateful.' Modern Family 's Frances Anderson Reveals Why She Changed Her Name

Originally appeared on E! Online This Modern Family star is embracing a new chapter. Though she was known as Aubrey Anderson-Emmons while portraying Lily on the beloved sitcom, the 18-year-old has changed her moniker to Frances Anderson as she steps into a new era as a musician. 'Frances is actually part of my legal name—it's my middle name, and it's after my mom's old family friend,' she shared in an exclusive interview with E! News' Francesca Amiker. 'I thought, one, it was a bit shorter than 'Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.' I do have a long, hyphenated last name.' Plus, she noted, 'I wanted to switch it up and I wanted people to see a new side of me. And I wanted to create a space specifically just for music. And I'm so excited for everybody to hear the songs on the EP, and I'm so grateful.' An EP, titled Drown, that is available now on all major platforms for fans to dive into—and one she hopes they'll connect with. 'A lot of my music is inspired from stuff when I was younger, when I was a kid,' she explained. 'A lot about what my experiences were like in high school, and I hope that people find it relatable.' I feel like that's peak edginess.' The actress also explained when she first felt drawn to pivoting into the music industry. 'I learned how to play guitar during COVID,' she said. 'And I learned to really write during my high school music class, and before then I've always been a singer. One of my big dreams in life was to be on Broadway. I'm still hoping to do that one day—fingers crossed.' So while singing lessons were a staple throughout her life, it was the act of starting to write music that changed everything, and she eventually stepped into her first studio in the fall of 2024. 'I think I really had to take a step back from acting,' Frances added of how she discovered her musical passion. 'The show ended when I was 12 years old, so after that I decided I'm not gonna act anymore. And I do now, I plan on acting again—100 percent.' But, after a childhood being homeschooled while she worked on Modern Family, being able to enter mainstream schooling with kids her own age made all the difference. As she put it, 'I took time for myself and really found myself.' Plus, she still has her TV family there to support her creative endeavors—including her onscreen dad Jesse Tyler Ferguson. 'I keep in touch with Jesse the most,' she revealed. 'He's commented every now and then, and pulled up on my Story and been like, 'Wow, you sound so great.' Which is awesome. He's always been so supportive.' For a look back at more of the Modern Family cast, and where they are today, read on. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons doesn't look like this anymore! Modern Family's Lily is unrecognisable on Australian TV show

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons stunned Channel Seven viewers on Friday morning when she looked almost unrecognisable during a TV interview. The actress, 18, first won hearts as Lily Tucker-Pritchett on the long-running US comedy series Modern Family. But she had fans doing a double take on The Morning Show when she looked all grown up, rocking a brand new look following her days on the cult hit. The child star sported long curly locks and a trendy fringe which covered much of her recognisable face as she discussed her latest career move. Releasing her new solo EP, Drown, Aubrey also reminisced over her time 'growing up' on Modern Family. Making her TV debut on the show at age four in 2009, Aubrey said her 10 years filming the series was 'wonderful'. 'All the adults around me were supportive and lovely,' she continued. Aubrey also revealed she had recently spent time re-watching the show because she could not remember filming certain episodes, as she was so young. Elsewhere in the chat, Aubrey revealed the real reason she chose to use Frances Anderson as a stage name for her music career. 'People know me as [the character of] Lily, so I just wanted to start afresh,' she confessed. However, she also explained Frances Anderson is part of her legal name and she wanted to shorten it. 'I have a very long name—Aubrey Frances Anderson-Emmons,' she said with a laugh. During the chat, Aubrey said she had always loved music. 'My mum is a musician and a classically trained singer, and my grandpa's also a piano player and a singer. So I guess it kind of runs in the family.' She had fans doing a double take on The Morning Show when she looked all grown up, rocking a brand new look following her days on the cult hit She said her new music was partly inspired by her 11 seasons on Modern Family as well as 'what happened after' the show ended in 2020. Her EP Drown comes after her well-received first single, the electropop song Telephones and Traffic, which dropped in May. During its run, Modern Family won 22 Emmys, and was a critics' darling and a ratings hit. Aubrey's Lily, who in the show is the adopted daughter of Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker, became a fan favourite for her unfiltered and hilarious outbursts. Modern Family is currently streaming on Disney+.
