Vatican to cinema: Pope Francis' film debut, ties with Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio, favourite films and more
Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died on Monday morning, as per Vatican. He was 88. The leader who was widely revered as a compassionate and progressive leader of the Catholic Church, spent his time voicing his opinion on social justice, environmental issues, and interfaith dialogue. In a surprising move, he also became the first pontiff to star in a film. Pope Francis made his film debut in 2018. Besides his documentary, Francis played himself in his debut film, Beyond the Sun (2018). An indie film, based on the gospels, had the Pope in a six-minute scene. Francis narrated Jesus' teachings with a group of children. 'He is used to having cameras in front of him now. He would advise [the crew] and be like, 'The light is better this way'. I didn't direct him. He was the one directing me,' revealed Beyond the Sun director, Graciela Rodriguez Gilio to The Hollywood Reporter. German filmmaker Wim Wenders helmed a documentary film, titled Pope Francis: A Man of His Word (2018), focusing on the beloved leader's life and goals. The documentary included excerpts from Pope's interviews and visuals from his life. 'The Pope has the same presence as some of the greatest movie stars I've worked with. But it comes from inside, from his convictions and his faith, and from his desire to talk to all of us,' Wenders told BBC once. 'He talked about paedophilia without hesitation, and that was when he was at his angriest. We really felt the fury in him – that he would like to do so much more but he's only one man,' he added. 'The film is about a man who wants to move his church and talk to everybody, not just Catholics and Christians. His is not just a Christian message. It's a message to all people of goodwill, and that's who he wants to address,' Wenders also said. Pope Francis' also had his favourite films. According to a report of The Guardian, he loved Rome, Open City; Babette's Feast; and La Strada. The late Pope met Angelina Jolie in January 2015 when she presented him her film Unbroken (2014). In 2016, actor Leonardo DiCaprio met the Pope to talk about climate change. In 2023, Pope Francis urged filmmakers to 'reawaken wonder' through their creations. 'In an increasingly artificial world, where man has surrounded himself with the works of his own hands, the great risk is to lose a sense of wonder. I share this reflection with you, entrusting you with the task to reawaken wonder,' the late Pope told filmmakers. Later, filmmaker Martin Scorsese arranged a meeting with Pope Francis and announced his upcoming film on Jesus. 'I have responded to the Pope's appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I'm about to start making it,' he said, as per Variety. Meanwhile, the Vatican is preparing for Pope Francis' funeral. The funeral is held within four to six days, and is led by the Dean of the College of Cardinals. Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. First Published: 21 Apr 2025, 07:26 PM IST

Pope Francis' tryst with movies: The first pontiff to star in a film; a documentary with Wim Wenders; meetings with Martin Scorsese, Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio
Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed in a video statement on Monday. Noted for his concern for the poor, Francis, née Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took over as pontiff at a time when the Church was reeling under child sex abuse scandals and infighting in the Vatican bureaucracy. Despite facing criticism from both conservatives — who felt that cherished traditions were being destroyed under his papacy — and progressives, who opined he wasn't doing enough to fix the historical mistakes, Francis garnered widespread acclaim with his firm stances, particularly those in favour of the marginalised. His tumultuous tenure, as well as promotion of interfaith dialogue and peace, drew the attention of filmmakers too. Interestingly, legendary German filmmaker and photographer Wim Wenders crafted a documentary film, titled Pope Francis: A Man of His Word (2018), focusing on his life and goals. The movie was crafted by stitching snippets from interviews with the pontiff and visuals from his journeys. 'Pope Francis had the same presence as greatest movie stars' 'The Pope has the same presence as some of the greatest movie stars I've worked with. But it comes from inside, from his convictions and his faith, and from his desire to talk to all of us,' Wenders shared during a chat with BBC. Interestingly, Francis agreed to collaborate with the director without having watched even a single one of his movies. 'He talked about paedophilia without hesitation, and that was when he was at his angriest. We really felt the fury in him – that he would like to do so much more but he's only one man,' the filmmaker noted. Pope Francis' favourite films 'The film is about a man who wants to move his church and talk to everybody, not just Catholics and Christians. His is not just a Christian message. It's a message to all people of goodwill, and that's who he wants to address,' he added. According to The Guardian, Pope Francis's favourite films were Rome, Open City; Babette's Feast; and La Strada. While Angelina Jolie met him in January 2015 to present her film Unbroken (2014), Leonardo DiCaprio met the Pope in 2016 to discuss climate change. First pope to star in a film Besides the documentary, Francis also became the first pope to star in a film. He played himself in Beyond the Sun (2018), an indie based on the gospels. In his six-minute scene, Francis was seen narrating Jesus' teachings with a group of children. 'He is used to having cameras in front of him now. He would advise [the crew] and be like, 'The light is better this way'. I didn't direct him. He was the one directing me,' the indie's director, Graciela Rodriguez Gilio, told The Hollywood Reporter. In 2023, he had also urged filmmakers to 'reawaken wonder', emphasising that a good movie had the power to inspire wonder. 'In an increasingly artificial world, where man has surrounded himself with the works of his own hands, the great risk is to lose a sense of wonder. I share this reflection with you, entrusting you with the task to reawaken wonder,' he told filmmakers. Pope Francis met Martin Scorsese Following this, cinema legend Martin Scorsese, in May 2023, met Francis before announcing that he would be making a film about Jesus. 'I have responded to the Pope's appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I'm about to start making it,' Variety quoted him as saying. Soon after news about Pope Francis' demise broke, one interview given by the cast of director Edward Berger's 2024 political thriller Conclave grabbed immediate attention. While the movie revolved around a conclave to elect the next pope, it hit the screens at a time when Francis was facing health issues owing to a severe case of double pneumonia. 'We are very, very worried for our pope. We love this pope — Papa Francesco, Pope Francis. We wish him well. We wish him to recover,' actor Isabella Rossellini, who played a key role in the movie, was quoted as saying by The Wrap. 'Yes, if [he] would pass, it would be a conclave,' she added.

Pope Francis passes away at 88: Did you know he appeared in a film directed by Wim Wenders that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival? Deets here
twitter Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and a globally respected religious figure, passed away at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death in an official statement on April 21, 2025, announcing that he died peacefully at Casa Santa Marta, his residence in Vatican City. Known for breaking many traditions, Pope Francis made history in several ways. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and also the first non-European leader of the Catholic Church in over 1,200 years — a milestone not seen since the Syrian-born Pope Gregory III in the 8th century. But what many people may not know is that Pope Francis also became somewhat of a movie figure during his lifetime. In 2018, a documentary titled "Pope Francis: A Man of His Word" was released. The film was directed and co-written by Wim Wenders, a German filmmaker well-known for his work with famous artists like Alicia Vikander, Mel Gibson, and even the rock band U2. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 17+ Actors You Didn't Know Were Gay - No. 8 Will Shock Women Journalistate Undo The film was unique because it offered a personal look at the Pope's thoughts, travels, and messages to the world. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year and was later released in the United States. What made it even more special was how Pope Francis appeared on screen. He was seen talking directly to the camera, creating the feeling that he was speaking one-on-one with viewers. This approach, often called 'breaking the fourth wall,' gave the documentary an intimate and powerful tone. In an interview with the BBC, Wenders spoke about his experience working with the Pope. He described Pope Francis as someone who had the same kind of presence as top movie stars, but in a very different way. According to Wenders, the Pope's powerful screen presence came not from fame or ego, but from his strong faith, genuine humility, and desire to connect with people. Wenders added that Pope Francis had told him he had never watched any of his films and did not follow cinema, proving his decision to appear in a movie was not for fame but to reach a wider audience. Wenders believed the Pope used the film as a way to communicate directly with people around the world, not as an actor, but as a spiritual guide. Throughout the film, Pope Francis talks about topics like compassion, justice, and caring for the poor — values he held close throughout his time as pope. As people around the world mourn his death, Pope Francis is being remembered not only as a religious leader but also as a compassionate human being who tried to connect with people in every possible way — including through a movie.
