Officials release video showing when 2 Mifflin Township officers were shot
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A suspect is still on the run after two Mifflin Township police officers were shot on Wednesday night. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office held a news conference on Thursday to show body camera video of how the shooting unfolded. Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said the incident started during a traffic stop by Mifflin Township officers about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Perdue Avenue and Mecca Road, in a part of the Northeast Side that falls outside of Columbus city limits. During the stop, Baldwin said that the passenger in the car, Daveonte Dixon, 21, started to run away. When officers chased after him, Dixon turned and fired, hitting the two officers. When funeral services will take place for Morrow County deputy killed on Memorial Day On Thursday, police continued to search for Dixon, who is on probation. Officials said he should be considered 'armed and dangerous.' Chief Deputy Rick Minerd said Dixon could be anywhere, but they won't stop until he's taken into custody. The warrants for his arrest have been entered nationally. 'There's no rock that you're going to hide under, Mr. Dixon,' Minerd said. 'We're going to bring him to justice.' 'Let's get this bum off the street,' he said. Minerd added that the gun used in the shooting has been recovered, but they believe Dixon may have access to other guns. Anyone who helps Dixon avoid capture will also face charges, he said. Dixon has prior convictions, including burglary and obstruction of justice, and is legally prohibited from carrying a firearm. Those with information are asked to contact law enforcement, with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Baldwin said the driver of the vehicle in the traffic stop cooperated with police, is not considered a suspect, and has been released. The Mifflin Township Police Department has five full-time officers. Mifflin Township said one of the injured officers will be released from the hospital Thursday while another underwent a second surgery Thursday morning and continues to recover. What we know about the conditions of the Mifflin Township officers who were shot
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Two Mifflin Township police officers were shot while conducting a traffic stop on Wednesday night on the northeast side, just outside of Columbus city limits. The officers were both rushed to the hospital. One was released from the hospital just a day after the shooting while the other has a long road to recovery. 'When bullets hit your body, it's not like the movies. A bullet hits your body and it completely destroys anything in its path,' Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 President Brian Steel said. One officer was shot in the arm and released from Grant Medical Center on Thursday, according to Steel. That officer will have to return to get surgery, but Steel said he is eager to get back to work. Suspect in fatal southeast Columbus shooting over Memorial Weekend arrested He said this shows the dedication of police officers, even after getting shot. 'The officers that were shot, they knew what they were doing. They knew there was a danger,' Steel said. 'They do that because the community is worth it and that's why they signed up for it.' The other officer was brought to Grant in critical condition, but Steel said he was changed to stable. 'He's alive by the grace of God, by the aid that was rendered by the medical staff at Grant. He is still with us. He's got a long road,' Steel said. 'I just ask your viewers to continue to pray for him. He is fighting.' Police officers from multiple jurisdictions were in and out of Grant Medical center on both Wednesday and Thursday. Mifflin Township Police Chief David Briggs said Columbus police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office have been a great help during this tough time. 'They had two officers outside their rooms at all times. They had several officers downstairs in the lobby outside the emergency room everywhere to escort family and friends to where they needed to go. It was overwhelming support,' Briggs said. Steel said right now, the officers and their families need to focus on rest and recovery. 'You have emotional injuries you're going to have from these events. You're going to have physical injuries,' Steel said. 'Time will tell for both of them.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Police release bodycam video of suspect shooting Mifflin Township police officers
Mifflin Township police released body camera footage of two officers shot by a man who ran from them during a May 28 traffic stop on Columbus' Northeast Side. Daveonte Dixon, 21, has been charged with attempted murder and two counts of felony assault for shooting the two Mifflin Township officers during a traffic stop at Perdue Avenue and Mecca Road. Dixon remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous, according to the sheriff's office. A $10,000 reward is being offered to anyone who provides information leading to his arrest, and the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9 is also offering an undisclosed sum of cash. Body camera footage, shown to media during a May 29 press conference at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office headquarters, shows the first Mifflin Township officer approach a black sedan that pulled over at around 6:40 p.m. The officer walks up to the driver's side of the car and speaks with the driver when Dixon, who is the passenger, begins getting out of the vehicle. At the same time, the second officer approaches as Dixon runs away. A brief foot chase ensues, and Dixon trips, pulls out a handgun and begins firing at the officers. One of the officers tries to use his Taser device just as Dixon begins firing. The struck officer drops to the ground, and several rounds of gunfire from Dixon are heard as he fires at the other officer. The second officer, who by now has also been struck, takes cover near a house on that same street, and blood is briefly seen on his arm as he declares over his radio that shots were fired and that he was struck. Dixon leaves, and doorbell camera footage from houses on that street shows him running past the houses. Both of the officers were transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. One was transported to the hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable, and one was in stable condition. The officer, who was initially in critical condition, will undergo surgery on May 29, according to the FCSO. Two Columbus police officers were also hurt responding to the incident when their cruiser was involved in a crash. Both officers have been treated and released, and the occupants in the other vehicle were treated at the scene, Columbus police said. At a May 29 press conference, FCSO deputy Rick Minerd urged Dixon to turn himself in and warned him that he would eventually be brought to justice. "There's no rock that you're going to hide under, Mr. Dixon," Minerd said. "We're going to bring him to justice. (We're) encouraging people to call in, help us get this bum off the streets."
