Another successful Kick It For Cans kickball tournament

RICHARD T. STANK MIDDLE SCHOOL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Kick It For Cans! That's the name of an annual kickball tournament and fundraiser for the Susquehanna Valley Sabers Food Center. This morning on a softball field behind Richard T Stank Middle School, teams from SV's two elementaries, Brookside and Donnelly, squared off in friendly competition. Joining them were Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar and district school resource officers, including Tony Wood who founded the tournament. In advance of the game donations were raised to support the food pantry. It was established 2 and a half years ago by Donnelly Social Worker Stilloe. 'Everybody has come together as a school community. I'm so grateful that I have everyone. I found my people. The high school kids that have come, their senior year, periodically through the school year to help pack boxes,' Stilloe said. More than 2 dozen businesses, organizations and families contributed over 10 thousand dollars to support the Sabers Food Center. Wood came up with the idea after witnessing 2 Sheriff's deputies join an impromptu kickball game after dropping off a donation to the center 2 years ago. Akshar buys full page ads to explain ICE cooperation

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – After his town hall in Endicott was cut short last week, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar has found an alternate way to get his message out about his department's cooperation with ICE. The Sheriff's Office has purchased a full-page ad in the Press & Sun-Bulletin three times this week. It's laid out in question-and-answer format and explains how Akshar says his department serves warrants on behalf of ICE and holds some of its detainees. Akshar tells News 34 that the questions are ones they've largely fielded from the community. And he says he considered submitting a guest viewpoint to the paper but that it would have limited him to 500 words. The ads, which ran Sunday, Monday, and Friday cost the Sheriff's Office $2,400. On Tuesday of last week, a scheduled town hall at the Endicott Visitors Center descended into chaos after criminal justice reform activists began shouting questions and demands in protest of the Sheriff's agreement with ICE. Protesters denounce Broome County's deal with ICE

TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The detainees of ICE's Alpine Metal Roofing raid may have been taken to the Broome County Jail, where protesters gathered today to denounce Sheriff Fred Akshar's decision to cooperate with ICE. Roughly 30 activists gathered with signs and chants outside of the correctional facility to demand an end to the Sheriff's cooperation with ICE. On March 10th, Akshar entered an agreement that would train and authorize some of the corrections officers at the jail to serve immigration warrants on inmates who lack legal status. He's also been housing ICE detainees, with the federal government paying the county $110 per day per inmate. The protesters accuse Akshar of acting a s jailer for a lawless President that they say is bent on destroying our democracy. They want the state government to pass a law that would prohibit law enforcement in the state from cooperating with ICE. 'End all cooperation with ICE. We want nothing to do with this. Broome County has no place in this terrible regime. This regime that is designed to instill fear, this regime that is designed to prevent people from having any sort of legal representation, and stealing people away from their communities and families,' JUST member Andy Pragasz said. Akshar issued a blistering response, calling the protesters far-left advocates who spread lies about the Sheriff's Office. He says his administration has taken a measured and pragmatic approach to its cooperation with federal law enforcement and that only a small number of lawfully-detained individuals have been housed at the jail temporarily as they make their way through the legal process. As of today, there are 27 ICE detainees inside the Broome County Jail.
