John Brogden claims the top spot and the Fred Moss Memorial Trophy
There were fantastic turnouts in respect of past members last weekend as many anglers from all over the region took part in competitions held by two of our local angling associations. First and more locally, a celebration took place on Saturday for one of the Liverpool & District AA's angling greats and a past chairman with that, Fred Moss. For this one match secretary Mike Dickson once again put together another superb open match in which many anglers who knew Fred personally, travelled far and wide to Maghull for the draw held at the MCA. With canal in fine form, particularly upon the noted areas of late, Wirral's Alan Dewhurst's emphatic win on Wednesday with a great catch of bream and skimmers for 36.8.0, alerted not only our visitors, but the many local Liverpool rods participating who were all sure to be looking to sit on a few fish in order to hopefully enjoy a great day's fishing like Dewhurst had experienced midweek. This one, which was pegged out through Maghull, was a match in which many regulars looked for a favoured draw on some historically good areas in which bream inhabit and there was no doubt at all that one or two of the field would be relishing a chance of a decent draw on the day. Next, taking a ride out along the East Lancashire Road to Carr Mill at St Helens on Monday, this was another match that saw many anglers taking part visiting from all over the region, including yours truly, all to also share their thoughts of another past member who was also very fondly respected, Dez Lowcock. As many will recognise, this huge natural expanse of water looking out to Billinge is a terrific venue. It's full of many species of fish including double figure carp and huge bream shoals along with roach, perch and the odd tench that are rare but present. So with nearly 50 anglers present to honour Dezzy on this one, this match was spread across the venue with many options open for everyone with regards to a personal approach. One man who doesn't need any confidence on Carr Mill is Local St Helens rod Peter Tickle. A winner on many occasions within his angling career, Tickle's knowledge on the dam is second to none particularly when looking at the present form as a guide. In this one Tickle drew a very much favoured area and with a presence of mind on his approach, he made no bones about how he was going to tackle it. Opting for a long pole approach at 15 metres and a 'back-up' of using an open ended feeder on the tip, Tickle took bream, skimmers and an unexpected 3lb tench for an overall winning weight of 17.4.0 to pick up the now coveted Dez Lowcock Memorial Shield. In second place was Steve Mitchell, who, pegged nearby on peg 8, took skimmers for 11.8.0 which closely outdid Royton's Jim Evans's 11lb third place effort. Manchester's Mark Harris and Skelmersdale's Steve Wooding took 8lb for joint fourth position. Superb run for Liverpool Angling Society's John Easton
A superb run of three consecutive match wins during the past week has no doubt given Liverpool Angling Society team captain John Easton a huge boost when looking forward to a busy match fishing ahead this summer. No stranger to success on the match fishing circuit, Easton's competitiveness see's him regularly exploring the many different canal lengths of our local Leeds Liverpool throughout the region each week, as he persistently endeavours to impress with his personal winning formula towards gaining success. Exploring the mostly unused sections of Netherton's Brown's Lane and back towards the once notorious Scott's and Courtauld's length's in Aintree, this one, the first of Liverpool and District Angling Association Monday evening series last week, Easton put together a catch that included a lovely 4lb bream to take the top honours with a winning 5.12.0. Then, turning out for the Association's regular Wednesday open matches organised from Maghull's Community Centre next to Green Lane swing bridge, this match midweek was pegged on Melling's Brewery Lane. Always looking for a change of scenery, Sunday then saw the Blundellsands man make the trip over to Cheshire to compete within an open match pegged on the Shropshire Union Canal at Waverton near Chester. A once favoured match length for many anglers upon the Northwest Match scene, another venue that saw hundreds of anglers within its day lining up to make a challenge on these once prolific lengths set in some wonderful countryside, the 'shroppy' on the day proved a difficult challenge for all the the visitors in this one. Easton though had other ideas, he put together 'a formula' that again saw him put a creditable together consisting of small skimmers, roach and a hybrid for yet another match winning catch for 6.4.0 and making the trip so much worthwhile. Liverpool and District AA hold open events every Sunday from 9am at the MCA, Maghull, on league events permitting. Also Monday evening 'flyers' which draw at 5pm. All enquiries can be made via the association website and social media FB platform and all are welcome. On the club front, our Alliance and Leicester saw reigning club champion Colin Pellow from Lydiate take Sunday's club points with a win as he put together a class 94.7.0 of carp using meat. Fazakerley's John Watson took a creditable 62.8.0 for second over third placed Richard Bamber. Moving up the East Lancashire Road to Newton and back onto another evening series, this one held on the association Vulcan Reservoir, a fantastic net of tench for 22lb backed up with a few F1's for a total 31.9.0 saw Newton's Sean Dalby take the evening sweep in style on Monday. Mike Smith, also from Newton took second place with another catch of tench and F1's for 15.15.0. St Helens AA will be holding a members match on Carr Mill dam on Sunday with a pairs match also taking place on bank holiday Monday. Memberships can be purchased online on the association website.
