Loan watch and ex-Blues: mixed fortunes on duo's debuts
There were mixed fortunes for Carlisle United's loan players in their first competitive outings this weekend.
Will Patching was on the winning side for Coleraine but Freddie O'Donoghue's Queen of the South debut ended in defeat.
Midfielder Patching was in the Coleraine XI as they faced Larne on the opening weekend of the Sports Direct Premiership in Northern Ireland.
The 26-year-old, who is on a season-long loan with the Bannsiders, played the full game as Ruaidhri Higgins' side struck late on to win 1-0.
Joel Cooper's 86th-minute goal made it a winning start for Patching and his team-mates at the Coleraine Showgrounds.
Next up for the Blues loanee is a trip to Cliftonville next weekend.
Teenage frontman O'Donoghue was a substitute for Queen of the South against Hamilton Academical a day after joining Peter Murphy's Scottish League One side on a half-season loan.
He was introduced from the bench in the 64th minute when the Doonhamers trailing 4-1.
O'Donoghue came close to scoring soon after coming on but Murphy's side – who also featured Taylor Charters – could not turn the tide and suffered a 4-1 defeat in their second league game of the campaign.
Next for the young Blues prospect and his team-mates is a Challenge Cup trip to East Kilbride tonight.

League Two saw both Omari Patrick and Kristian Dennis on the scoresheet for Tranmere Rovers as they thrashed Shrewsbury Town 4-0.
In League One, Jack Diamond claimed a goal and an assist for Stockport County as they won 2-1 at Wycombe Wanderers, with Owen Moxon also in the Hatters' XI.
Cumbrian keeper James Trafford made his first Manchester City first-team outing as Pep Guardiola's side defeated Palermo 3-0 to win the Anglo Palermitan trophy in pre-season.
And Dean Henderson saved two Liverpool penalties to help Crystal Palace claim shoot-out success to win the Community Shield.
In National League North, Adam Murray enjoyed a winning start as Kidderminster Harriers boss as they defeated Scarborough Athletic 1-0.
In the same division, Andy Preece's Chorley started with a 3-2 win at Darlington.
And Ian Watson's first league game with South Shields was also a successful one thanks to a 1-0 win against Marine.
National League South saw Angelo Balanta on target in Hornchurch's 3-2 win over Weston-super-Mare.
In the Northern Premier League Premier Division, Darren Edmondson's first competitive game back as Workington Reds manager saw a 2-1 defeat at home to Gary Liddle's Whitby Town.
