Someone bought a winning $4 million lottery ticket at this South Dakota gas station
A South Dakota Lottery player purchased a winning ticket worth $4 million from the Freedom Valu Center in Vermillion.
The player won the prize as a result of the Aug. 6 Lotto America drawing, the South Dakota Lottery said in a news release. They're the state's first multistate jackpot winner since 2018.
The player chose the cash option for the $4 million jackpot, which amounted to a one-time payment of about $1.8 million, the news release says. The Freedom Valu Center will get a $10,000 incentive for selling the winning ticket.

Where does the money from lottery games go?
South Dakota's general fund, which supports public schools, state universities and technical colleges, receives 70% of the net revenue from lottery games, including Lotto America. The state's Capital Construction Fund receives the remaining 30%, which supports the Water and Environment Fund, the Ethanol Fuel Fund and the State Highway Fund, according to the South Dakota Lottery.
In 2024, more than $183 million went back to the state, the South Dakota Lottery's website says.
