Murderer's motel stay anything but restful
Practicing physician and author of more than 20 thrillers, Freida McFadden delivers a fast-paced, unpredictable popcorn thriller in her New York Times bestseller Do Not Disturb. After killing her husband, Quinn Alexander goes on the run. A snowstorm immediately interrupts her plans, and she is forced to spend the night at the Baxter Motel. Across from her window is the proprietor's house where, in the second floor window, his wife is always watching. Do Not Disturb explores abusive and imperfect relationships through three different couples and their involvement with Quinn's crime. But rather than a nuanced dissection of the problem, McFadden paints a radical 'what if?' Do Not Disturb What if my husband gets angry and it's kill or be killed? What if the police don't believe me? The novel is written from several perspectives, always in first person and always with a similar tone of voice. Characters all seem to speak and think similarly, their actions often unexplained or unrealistic. While they will interpret things in different ways, facts are facts. When a scene is recounted from two perspectives in Do Not Disturb, characters will sometimes contradict each other's details. It effectively hides future plot twists, but makes it hard for readers to know what is true. When you pick up a popcorn thriller, there's a certain expectation of quality mixed with entertainment. McFadden walks that line, and Do Not Disturb is a great example. The plot can feel forced and the character growth is limited, but that's not why readers are picking it up. They're looking for page after page of non-stop excitement. McFadden delivers. Do Not Disturb is exciting enough to read in one weekend, whether it's on the beach or in the comfort of your own home. It will keep you engaged through the TV blasting in the next room, kids fighting or loud neighbours. You can put it down, but it would be a struggle not to pick it back up. Owen White is a freshly graduated writer and editor who loves nothing more than a good thriller.

9 books you need to read before they hit the screen
There's nothing more satisfying than reading a book before it becomes a screen sensation – especially when A-listers are lining up to bring your favourite characters to life. And given more literary bigwigs than ever are having novels adapted into movies and TV shows, it means our 'to be read' lists are growing ever longer. Whether you're after a sweeping romance for the beach or a twisty thriller to keep you up at night, these are the novels to dive into before everyone tunes in. Read them now; smugly say 'The book was better' later. 9 great books to read before they hit the screen My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan Soon to be a Netflix film starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, My Oxford Year tells the story of American student Ella Duran who's studying for a year at, you guessed it, Oxford University. As the term goes on, Ella can't deny the growing attraction to her lecturer, Jamie Davenport, and when she learns of his life-changing secret, their relationship becomes deeper than Ella could ever have anticipated. As her Oxford year draws to a close, she needs to decide whether the dreams she arrived with are the same ones she'll leave with. Release: 1st August 2025 £10.99 Shop The Housemaid by Freida McFadden One of the bestselling books of 2023, The Housemaid is a twisty psychological thriller that promises *literal* gasps. Millie, a young woman with a secret, moves to live with the rich Winchesters as their maid – however she quickly finds out the Winchesters' secrets are every bit as dark as her own. Its smash-hit success is sure to be replicated when the movie version comes out, with an A-list cast featuring Brandon Sklenar, Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. We can't wait. Release: 25th December 2025 £7.99 Shop The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Brit Bennett's novel was nominated for pretty much every fiction award running. It tells the story of the Vignes identical twin sisters, who grew up together in a small, southern black community before running away aged 16. A decade later, one lives in a southern community with her black daughter; another passes as white with a white husband who knows nothing of her past. Despite being separated by miles and lies, the fate of the twins remains intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Set to be another huge hit for HBO, Aziza Barnes (Snowfall) and Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play) will write and produce. Release: Predicted 2026 £9.99 Shop Caught Stealing by Charlie Huston Fans of a good action-thriller will be delighted when the film adaptation of this 2004 novel hits screens next month. It follows former baseball player Henry 'Hank' Thompson, now a barman in Manhattan, who is attacked by two Russians and realises someone, somewhere must want something from him. Within hours he's been pulled into the violent underbelly of New York, forced to take on sadistic cops, hit men and mobsters to survive. It's a cast of megastars: Austin Butler, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith and Bad Bunny. Release: 29th August 2025 £13.51 Shop The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware Ruth Ware's novel sees a young journalist, Lo, head on a luxury press cruise, attempting to heal from a traumatic break in. Then woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body being thrown overboard from the next-door cabin. But records show nobody ever checked into the cabin and no passengers are missing from the boat. Did an exhausted and emotional Lo make a mistake, or is she trapped with a murderer who's one step ahead? The passenger list for Netflix 's film adaptation includes Keira Knightley, Hannah Waddingham, Kaye Scodelario and Guy Pearce. Release: Autumn 2025 £9.99 Shop People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry Has any book released in the last decade caused as much furore among romance lovers as People We Meet on Vacation? Emily Henry's novel about two friends who holiday together every year, until a misunderstanding tears them apart. Now, reunited, they head on one last trip – a trip that will determine the rest of their lives… We reckon the movie will be just as swoon-worthy, with Tom Blyth, Emily Bader, Jameela Jamil and Lucien Laviscount sizzling on screen. 'I watched their chemistry read four times in 12 hours and I loved it more every single time,' Henry teased. We're so excited. Release: 9th January 2026 £9.99 Shop The Running Man by Stephen King Another King novel will get the Hollywood treatment this fall, this time revolving around a future dystopia obsessed with barbaric reality entertainment (sound familiar?). Every night, people watch the ultimate live death game as contestants try and beat not just the clock, but annihilation at the hands of the Hunters. Survive 30 days and win the billion dollar jackpot, but the odds are brutal and the game rigged. The best score so far is eight days – at least until a new contestant, the Running Man, comes along. Everyone's favourite Hollywood heartthrob, Glen Powell, leads, with Colman Domingo and Michael Cera also starring. Release: 7th November 2025 £10.99 Shop The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah Number one bestseller The Nightingale charts the path of two very different sisters in Nazi France, Vianne and Isabelle Mauriac. Separated by ideals and circumstances, each must try and find a way to not only survive persecution, but embark on their own dangerous journey towards love and freedom. The film will be produced and led by sisters Elle and Dakota Fanning in their first ever onscreen collaboration. Release: 12th February 2027 £9.99 Shop Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell We loved Maggie O'Farrell's tragic novel about the inspiration behind Shakespeare's play, following the life of Hamnet, the Bard's only son, and his family. It's a story of the bond between twins, of a marriage pushed to the brink by grief and a boy whose life has been all but forgotten, but whose name was given to one of the most famous plays ever written. Directed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao, the film adaptation will see Paul Mescal take on Shakespeare, Jessie Buckley star as his wife Agnes and Jacobi Jupe feature as Hamnet. Get your tissues ready. Release: 27th November 2025 £9.99 Shop
