Trail repairs continue at Sterling State Park, one fishing pier now is closed

Another section of Sterling State Park in Monroe County has been closed off as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources continues a series of trail and parking area repairs. The trail closings this season are restricting much of the area around Hunt Club Marsh, North Lagoon and South Lagoon that are popular for running, bicycling, bird watching and dog walking. The work includes shoreline stabilization, erosion control, tree root removal and bridge repairs. The goal is to reopen that area in mid-August. The trails that remain open are along the beach, campground and boat launch sections of the park near Lake Erie. "While significant progress has been made, there's still more to do," the park posted on social media Saturday. The new closings that started Tuesday include the Trailhead Parking Lot and the south fishing pier. Contractors are now working on the replacement of the fishing pier area near that parking lot. The north fishing pier will remain open, but anglers will need to park at the beach parking lot and then walk over, the park said. Sterling State Park is near Monroe in Frenchtown Township, east of Interstate 75's Exit 15.

Flat Rock man dies after rollover crash in Frenchtown Township

A Flat Rock man has died as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Monroe County, the Michigan State Police, Monroe post, reported. The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. Sunday on North Dixie Highway in Frenchtown Township, at Fernwood Street near a residential district known locally as the beach communities. Troopers said a red Ford F-150 was southbound on North Dixie Highway when, for reasons not yet known, the pickup crossed over into the northbound travel lane, jumped a curb on the east side of the roadway, struck a tree and rolled onto its roof. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Flat Rock, was taken by Monroe Community Ambulance to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital, where he died of his injuries. Northbound and southbound North Dixie Highway in the area of the crash was closed intermittently for several hours while troopers did their investigation. Red Lobster restaurant in Monroe County considered a total loss after an overnight fire

A Red Lobster restaurant building in Monroe County, Michigan, was destroyed after a fire was discovered early Monday on site. The restaurant at 1553 North Dixie Highway, Frenchtown Township, is amid the restaurants and hotels that are just off Interstate 75's Exit 15. There were no injuries, and no damage to the nearby buildings. "Obviously, the building is a total loss," Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Wendy Stevens said about 5 a.m. when firefighters remained on scene and smoke was still rising from the building. Stevens said a passerby called emergency services about 2:16 a.m., reporting there was smoke coming from the building. By that time, the crews who worked Sunday night had left. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames visible and started to go inside. "The fire was already well into the ceiling. The ceiling started coming down on the firefighters," the chief said. "We pulled them out and did a defensive attack." The westbound lanes of North Dixie Highway in front of the restaurant were blocked to traffic because of the number of emergency vehicles on site. First responder agencies assisting included City of Monroe Fire, Exter Township Fire, Berlin Township Fire, Estral Beach Fire, Ash Township Fire and Monroe Community Ambulance. The London-Maybee-Raisinville Fire Department was on standby. The restaurant is one of over two dozen Red Lobster sites in Michigan.
