One dead, 17 missing as Nepal flood destroys China border bridge

KATHMANDU: Floods triggered by torrential rains in Nepal on Tuesday (Jul 8) tore down a Himalayan mountain valley, sweeping away 18 people and destroying a key border bridge with China, a government official said. One person has been confirmed dead and 17 others are listed as missing in the floods on the Bhotekoshi River, said Arjun Paudel, chief district officer of Rasuwa district. The flooding destroyed the Friendship Bridge at Rasuwagadi, which is 120km north of the capital, Kathmandu, in the early hours of Tuesday. It also swept away several houses and trucks that were parked at the border for customs inspections. Hundreds of electric vehicles imported from China were also parked at the border point. Eleven Nepalis and six Chinese people are among the missing, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said. Police said 95 rescuers were already in the area and more are expected to join in rescue efforts. An army helicopter was used to lift people stranded by the flooding Deadly floods and landslides are common across South Asia during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts say climate change is making them worse. The United Nations' World Meteorological Organization said last year that increasingly intense floods and droughts are a "distress signal" of what is to come as climate change makes the planet's water cycle ever more unpredictable. The Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) warned in June that communities face heightened disaster risks this monsoon season.

CCCC reaffirms long-term commitment to Malaysia's infrastructure growth

BEIJING: China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to Malaysia, expressing its readiness to deepen its involvement in the country's infrastructure development, which the company regards as key to long-term regional connectivity. As one of the world's largest infrastructure players, CCCC sees Malaysia as a vital strategic partner, with growing potential for collaboration across sectors. Its international business department executive general manager, Cai Chuansheng said CCCC is eager to explore new investment opportunities and expand its footprint in Malaysia through its subsidiary, China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC). Over the past four decades, he said CHEC has undertaken numerous infrastructure projects in Malaysia, with a cumulative value of around US$20 billion. "China and Malaysia are good neighbours in Asia, and we have frequent communication at all levels and regular exchanges in socio-economic development. This gives us many opportunities to cooperate," Cai said during a meeting with the Malaysian media delegation at CCCC's headquarters in Beijing. He noted that Malaysia's sustained infrastructure drive and stable economic fundamentals continue to make the country an attractive destination for foreign investors. CCCC is the world's fourth-largest construction company and is well known for its strong track record in delivering major infrastructure projects globally. Its flagship infrastructure projects include the Mombasa–Nairobi Railway in Kenya, the Sukkur–Multan Highway in Pakistan, the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge, the China–Laos Railway and the Port City in Sri Lanka. The company currently maintains business operations in over 158 countries. In Malaysia, CCCC is the main contractor for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) – the largest single project under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the country – which is slated for completion in December 2026. As the engineering, procurement and construction contractor, CCCC is responsible for the project's overall design and financing support, as well as the construction of the 665km railway linking the east coast states to the Klang Valley. The company has had a long-established presence in Malaysia, delivering key infrastructure such as the Penang Second Bridge, the LRT Ampang Line Extension Project and the MRT Sentul West Underground Station. Beyond rail and bridge construction, CCCC is also active in marine engineering, dredging and reclamation and highway development. "The 40 years of doing business have left us with beautiful memories. Moving forward, we hope to strengthen our cooperation and undertake more projects – including major ones – in Malaysia, contributing CCCC's professional capabilities to building an even more beautiful Malaysia," Cai said.

Saifuddin confirms second 'Friendship Bridge' project on track

RANTAU PANJANG: The agreement between Malaysia and Thailand to construct the second "Friendship Bridge" remains unchanged, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the current bridge, built in 1973, has served as a vital cross-border link for more than five decades. "In 2025, both nations are moving forward with plans to build a new structure to enhance connectivity and support regional development," he told reporters here today. Saifuddin said preparations on Malaysia's side involve three key components. "The first involves the Home Ministry (KDN), which is responsible for developing a new Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex. "The second component, led by the Public Works Ministry (KKR), involves determining whether a new access road is needed or if the existing route will be upgraded," he said. He added that the Transport Ministry is the third key player, as Thailand has proposed extending its railway service from Bangkok to Rantau Panjang. "In the most recent meeting between the Malaysian and Thai transport ministers, Thailand expressed its desire for its railway track to terminate in Rantau Panjang. "At the same time, the Kelantan government has requested that the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) be extended from Tunjong to Rantau Panjang to ensure better connectivity," he said. He explained that KDN's responsibilities also include addressing the old railway bridge, which forms part of the overall border infrastructure planning. On land acquisition, Saifuddin said several plots must still be secured before ICQS construction can proceed. "This is our current priority," he said. When asked whether the project would proceed, Saifuddin confirmed: "Yes, it will go ahead. On our end, KKR is in the final stages of appointing a contractor, and the same process is happening on the Thai side." He said the construction timeline would be coordinated by the relevant agencies from both countries. During his working visit to Bangkok on April 17, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation to his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, for helping to realise the bridge project. Anwar noted that the second Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok bridge had long been discussed between the two countries, and is now being realised under Paetongtarn's leadership. The bridge, dubbed the "Friendship Bridge", is expected to cost RM40.54 million and be completed by 2028. The cost will be shared equally by both governments.
