Creative companions to launch fest programme
Kiwi artist and author Dick Frizzell will be part of a special event in Queenstown next month. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED Two of the country's most celebrated visual artists, and great mates, will launch this year's Queenstown Writers Festival programme. Painter Dick Frizzell's coming to Queenstown to discuss his new memoir, Hastings, with Central Otago's Sir Grahame Sydney on August 31. Writers fest chair Tanya Surrey's delighted the titans of Aotearoa art have agreed to be part of the programme launch, details of which will be revealed after the pair's chat. Frizzell's known for his kiwiana paintings, including 'Mickey to Tiki', along with landscapes and still life, but he's also a gifted story-teller — Hastings, his fifth book, is a childhood memoir and love letter to a small regional town and his parents. Described as "funny, big-hearted and sharply drawn", it includes 30 short stories, each conjuring a moment of his Hawke's Bay childhood. Kiwi artist and author Sir Grahame Sydney will be part of a special event in Queenstown next month. Meantime Sir Grahame — knighted in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art — is known from his decades painting Central Otago landscapes, but he's also authored several books. He can't remember meeting Frizzell, but remembers considering himself a "little faraway regionalist painter from the insignificant south", describing Frizzell as a "trendy, contemporary, up and out there famous Aucklander". While Sir Grahame says Frizzell was "much older than me", Mountain Scene understands the age gap's about five years. He says Frizzell was "all the things I wasn't" — "charismatic and confident and probably as rich as Croesus", and he boasted a "fabulous" head of hair. Sir Grahame says he's got "immense admiration" for Frizzell's many talents. While best known as an artist, he's also a "wonderful" writer and a "demon" ukulele player. "The only thing he can't do is sing," he quips. Tickets for the festival launch with Frizzell and Sir Grahame went on sale Thursday, via Eventfinda.

Airdrie hero Adam Frizzell says he's left Diamonds in a good place as he looks back on four-year spell
The club captain departed last week for Derry City Former Airdrie skipper Adam Frizzell feels he's left the club in a good place, as he looked back on his four years in the Diamond. The 27-year-old signed for League of Ireland side Derry City last week on an 18-month contract that he said was 'too good to turn down', with the side chasing a European place. Frizzell's new team are currently over halfway through their season as Scottish football prepares for the big kick-off and he believes he has left the club on strong footing. The midfielder departs with plenty of fond memories of his spell in Monklands having captained the team to a long-awaited trophy in 2023 with their SPFL Trust Trophy triumph and also promotion in the same year. Asked about his favourite moment from his spell at New Broomfield, Frizzell said: "There have been so many. The first season I went in, we were excellent. We finished second [to Cove] but we won almost every game that season. We had a really good team. "In the second year, we won promotion which was unbelievable as well. "In the third year we won the cup and the club hadn't done that in a long time. To do that as captain was a massive honour for me. "There will be a lot better players than me that don't lift a trophy in their career so it will probably be something I appreciate even more when I look back. "Last year was a bit sticky, but we got there in the end and kept the club in the division. "That was massive for me. If I thought there was a chance of moving on, I wanted to leave the club in a really good place, which I think it is. "It is a really young, exciting squad and I am looking forward to watching them this season, supporting them from afar." Frizzell feels he is making a step up by moving overseas and hopes to get a taste of Europa Conference League football with Derry next season. He said: "I got a very small taste of it [playing in Europe] when I was very young playing for Kilmarnock and we went out in the first round to a Welsh team. "That's what you dream of when you're young and to be going and pushing for Europe was a big selling point. "Not only that but I don't think it would be disrespectful in saying that it's probably a step up in general. It's a really tough league now with a lot of good players in it. It was time for me to come over and challenge myself and I'm looking forward to doing that."

Airdrie 'saddened' as captain departs to pursue overseas move
Adam Frizzell has left the Diamonds after four years at the club Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell has called time on his spell with the Diamonds to pursue a chance at European football at an overseas club. The Championship side have announced that the midfielder has opted to end a four-year spell at New Broomfield. Former Kilmarnock man Frizzell, 27, has spent his entire career in Scotland, also featuring for the likes of Livingston, Dumbarton and Queen of the South, but he is ready for a new challenge outwith his homeland. A club statement read: "With four years and 17 goals under his belt, midfielder Adam Frizzell has called time on his spell at Airdrieonians after being made an offer by an overseas club with a chance of playing European football. "Influential midfielder Frizzell has been a mainstay in the Diamonds side since joining from Dumbarton in 2021, and his consistently classy performances saw him picking up this year's Players Player of the Year and Ian McMillan Player of the Year awards. "Among his 17 strikes for Airdrie were a number of Goal of the Season contenders, with last August's determined solo effort at Dundee every bit as easy on the eye as the previous season's outside-of-the-boot rocket against Raith Rovers. "Adam's influence on the park and in the dressing room saw him named club captain in 2023, a role which he has served with distinction while continuing to display the skill and work ethic which made him a hero to the Diamonds fanbase. "We are naturally saddened to see such an important figure at the club moving on, but we recognise the opportunity that the upcoming move affords to Adam, with the possibility of European football presenting a significant attraction. "We wish him every success with his new team. Thanks for everything, and good luck for the future, Frizz!" Airdrie players returned for pre-season training today and Frizzell's exit follows that of defenders Mason Hancock and Craig Watson, as well as striker Ben Wilson and winger Lewis McGregor, who both departed for moves to TNS and Coleraine, respectively, for undisclosed fees.
