Otter center fielder Graham Brown named player of the week
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Evansville Otters center fielder Graham Brown has been named the Frontier League player of the week. Brown batted 12-22 this week including a home run and four doubles. He slashed for .545/.600/.955 including a one homer, three RBI game against Schaumburg. High school baseball: Alexandria pounces early, celebrates long-awaited Frontier League title
May 23—COPENHAGEN — A determined pitching effort and a quick start at the plate proved to be beneficial for the Alexandria baseball team Friday in claiming an elusive league title. Battling through the elements, pitcher Nathan Hoffmann kept the opposition at bay and received plenty of early run support to propel the Purple Ghosts to an 11-2 triumph over Sackets Harbor and win the Frontier League's "D" Division playoff title on a rainy evening at Copenhagen High School. Advertisement Top-seeded Alexandria improves to 12-5 on the season and claimed its first division playoff championship in what is believed to be at least two decades. "It's awesome," Hoffmann said. "It's great, we've been working all season for this, I've been ready for this." "Ever since we were young we were a team together and we were pretty good then and we developed into the team we are now," Sanford said. The Purple Ghosts wasted no time in striking offensively, in a game played in a steady rain, by scoring nine runs in the first inning to take command. Evan Sanford led the way at the plate by reaching base twice in the opening inning, driving in two runs and scoring a pair of runs. Advertisement Hoffman and Sanford combined on a four-hitter, with Hoffman pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, with only one of them earned, while walking five and striking out 14 to record the win. "I felt amazing, I felt great off the bump today," Hoffmann said. "We all did a good job in the field and keeping the lead in the game, we just played our game." "I think Nate pitched great," Sanford said. "I call him gas station. He was throwing heat, he was putting it in there. That's what I'm going to start calling him from now on." Alexandria didn't waste any time in setting the tone in the first inning as it sent 13 batters to the plate, generating the nine runs on five hits, a walk, a hit batsman and three errors. Advertisement "The first inning, we came out hot, we did our thing, the boys did it all together," Hoffmann said. "We did it as a team and as a family." After Sanford reached on an error in the outfield, he scored when Troy Newberry reached on an infield single, Later after Charlie Gorman walked to load the bases, Newberry came home when Hoffmann reached on an error and another run scored on a throwing miscue, and the Purple Ghosts led 3-0. Bradley Robbins followed with an RBI single and Sanford them belted a two-run double to left field for a 6-0 advantage. Mason Savage then hit a two-run single, and Newberry stroked an RBI double to center for the 9-0 lead. Advertisement "A great first inning," Alexandria coach Benton Kessler said. "Evan is a great leadoff hitter, so we had him originally at cleanup and then moved him to the one-hole. He found his spark, went 4-for-4 against Copenhagen one game and he's been there for the rest of the season." "Just hammering it to them, early and often," Sanford said. The Purple Ghosts plated two more runs in the second as Gorman singled and after Hoffmann singled, Gorman scored from first base on a miscue. Hoffmann later scored on a wild pitch for an 11-0 advantage. Sackets Harbor got two runs back in the third as Will Virkler drew a leadoff walk and after Jake Peters doubled, Virkler scored on Ethan Shi's groundout, and Damon Serow followed with an RBI double. Advertisement Hoffmann worked out of trouble in the second inning and the sixth innings, striking out the side both times, after the Patriots had loaded the bases in the sixth. "It was great, his last game against General Brown was a little rough, we took him out in the first inning," Kessler said of Hoffmann's effort. "He was able to stay within himself, bounce back and he pitched a great game." "My two-seam fastball is going and when I got the slider going, it was going," Hoffmann said. After throwing 126 pitches, including a strikeout in the top of the sixth inning, Hoffman was relieved by Sanford, who struck out the two batters he faced to close out the win. Advertisement "When he's trusting his fastball, no one can touch it," Kessler said of Hoffmann. "He's got a God-given arm and if he's on, nobody's going to touch him. Just making sure he finds the strike zone and getting ahead of hitters." Serow finished 3-for-3 on the day, including his double, and drove in a run for second-seeded Sackets Harbor (7-9). Hoffmann and Sanford, both seniors, have played together since the peewee baseball level in Alexandria Bay, so both truly appreciate their team's breakout season. "Ever since peewees we were a team together and we were pretty good then and we developed into the team we are now," Sanford said. Advertisement After winning only six games last season, Alexandria claimed the league's "D" Division regular-season title en route to the postseason. "It feels amazing, actually," Hoffman said. "It's the first time in 26 years I believe that we've been to the championship for the "D" Division, it's just amazing, we're ready to go." "This is really great for these boys because it's a great group of seniors," Kessler said. "They work really hard, they're skilled and they're dedicated. We kind of had to get over a mental hump, but we finally put everything together, we were able to go undefeated in the league and this is a great way to cap it off." Said Sanford: "It feels good, we got a new gym recently, so we'll be hanging some new banners in there." Advertisement Now the Purple Ghosts are anticipating a favorable seeding in the Section 3 Class D playoffs and perhaps even a home playoff game. "This is real nice, but the job's not finished," Hoffman added.

May 7—WATERTOWN — Evan Dicob and Trent Gardner each scored three goals to pace the Carthage offense in a 10-1 victory over Immaculate Heart Central in Frontier League boys lacrosse Tuesday. Stellar reputation helps Goldeyes' reel in prospects
Matthew Warkentin didn't need much convincing to join the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The 28-year-old targeted the club as much as it did him. Warkentin, who grew up in Leamington, Ont., about 45 minutes east of Windsor, has kept tabs on Canadian teams in independent leagues since he turned pro in 2021. JOHN WOODS / FREE PRESS files Landen Bourassa will be the Winnipeg Goldeyes' starting pitcher on opening day against the Cleburne Railroaders. Earlier this spring, after being released from Rieleros De Aguascalientes of the Mexican Baseball League, he turned his attention to the American Association, and specifically the Goldeyes. It wasn't long before skipper Logan Watkins, who received a strong recommendation to look at the first baseman from Mexican League manager José Amado, came calling. 'I knew that I wanted to play at, most likely, the American Association, just because I think it's the best league, from everything I've heard from the guys,' Warkentin said after the Goldeyes' final dress rehearsal Tuesday afternoon against the Kansas City Monarchs in Missouri. 'I just know that the history of the Goldeyes is pretty— it goes back quite far.' It made for an easy recruitment for Watkins, who downplayed his role in helping Winnipeg remain an attractive destination for players. 'I mean, I'd say it's far less to do with me and more just the reputation the organization has. It's been one of the premier places in independent baseball for a long time, and that's absolutely outdated me,' said Watkins, who nearly guided the Fish from worst to first in his first full season as a professional manager. 'You have to give (GM) Andrew (Collier) and (owner) Sam (Katz) a lot of credit for keeping the reputation of this organization as high as it is.' Warkentin, who spent the last two summers playing for the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, joins a club that finished atop the West Division at 56-43 a year ago and backed up its top seeding all the way to the American Association championship series, where they ran into a buzzsaw in the Kane County Cougars. He is expected to provide some pop in a lineup that scraped by without much power last summer. The Goldeyes recorded a league-low 62 home runs, which limited their upside at the plate and put a lot of pressure on their starting pitchers. Fortunately, Watkins put together the best pitching staff in the league, which held opponents to a league-best 3.64 runs per game while allowing a league-low 816 hits. 'The Frontier League is definitely starting to produce a lot of players that translate really well to this league,' said Watkins. 'He had two really good years in the Frontier League, showed really good power numbers.' Defence has always come naturally to Warkentin, but an improved focus at the plate has paid dividends. The right-handed batter hit a combined 51 long balls over the last two years and led the circuit with 83 RBI last summer en route to being named the league's all-star first baseman. He also posted a .299 batting average in 2024. 'When you look at his numbers from previous seasons, (the home runs are) definitely the first thing that jumps out,' Watkins added. 'But then getting him here and watching him through spring, he's a really solid defensive-first baseman. He's not just a big guy over there, he's athletic, moves around, fills his position well. I think he'll be a big addition for us.' The real games begin for the Goldeyes Thursday in Cleburne, Texas, against the Railroaders (7 p.m.). Pitcher Landen Bourassa, one of the team's longest tenured players in his fifth season, has been told he will get the ball on opening day. It's the first time he's earned the first start. 'It's not a crazy thing or anything, because everybody's going to have their first starts and their first games,' said Bourassa, one of six Canadians and 13 returning players from last season. 'I think it's definitely a nod of confidence from Logan as the manager, and that means a lot. 'I think it doesn't matter really who's throwing, I guess, the mission is kind of the same, but I guess if they want me to take the ball first, then I guess it's my turn.' Following their four-game series in Texas, the Goldeyes head back to Missouri for a three-game set against the Monarchs before travelling to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Saltdogs for three contests. They will return for their first home game on May 20 against the Milwaukee Milkmen. Watkins knows it won't be easy for the Fish to reclaim their spot atop the West, despite returning nearly half of the roster from a year ago. The best collection of arms has been dismantled, with the most notable departure being the league's reigning Pitcher of the Year, Joey Matulovich, who retired earlier this year. The depth of this year's staff is also already being tested, as newcomers Aaron Shortridge and Marcel Renteria, two presumed starters, suffered season-ending injuries in their first spring throwing sessions. Meanwhile, Tyler Jans and Brady Rose, two young arms expected to be key contributors out of the bullpen, were injured before camp started and have not reported to the Goldeyes as they await more information on their future. 'The league, they should be finalizing roster cuts here in the next two days, so we'll be kind of on the lookout, looking to see if any guys come on waivers that we might claim, and we're kind of taking that day by day,' said Watkins. 'I'm not gonna lie, it's been a little bit of a tough-luck spring as far as injuries go, but that's part of the job.' Ramón Bramasco will start most days at third base, while Ray-Patrick Didder and Andy Armstrong are used at shortstop and second base. Watkins, who was anticipating Croes' departure, remains optimistic about his bats. 'We still should have a really good defensive infield, and then, again, we'll see how everyone hits, but I still feel pretty good,' Watkins said. 'I mean, don't get me wrong, losing Dayson Croes is a huge loss, but we stacked the lineup, we feel like, with some bats that are going to be productive this year.'
