Construction coming along at new PSP Summit Twp. barracks
A new state police headquarters nearly 30 years in the making is making some serious headway almost a year and a half after starting construction. In the spring of 2026, 100 state troopers will be stationed at Troop E's new 45,000 square-foot headquarters. It will house both the Erie and Girard barracks, all under one roof. 'The exterior of the building is complete. They're currently completing interior walls, wiring for network connection, phone connection, intercom system, and all of the wiring,' said Trooper Todd Bingman, community service officer with PSP. DUI checkpoints planned in Erie Co. for Easter weekend The initial project price estimates came in at $33 million. Both state police and local elected officials called it a great investment in public safety for the region. Trooper Bingman said they've outgrown their current home in Lawrence Park, and the upgrade in space can help cases be solved even faster. 'Our evidence storage area is going to be much larger. It's very cramped where we're at now. We actually have to have another secure area in the current garage,' said Bingman. 'We'll be able to contain all of the evidence in one centralized area, which is very important for chain of custody in court cases.' The two-floor facility also features a 50-yard indoor firing range, expansive space for cold case investigations, and an enclosed parking area, making a difference in response times during the winter. Fuller Hose Company to host annual Recruitment Open House It's a barracks geared towards future growth and is built to last. 'Policing services does evolve,' said Bingman. 'This building is hardwired for all of that, technology needs, it's all built in and it's all built in such a way that any new technology can easily be integrated.' When the building is ready to house police, both the Girard and Erie barracks will be closed. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
