HMD Unveils Phone With Parental Controls and Social Media Locks
(Bloomberg) -- HMD Global Oy, the company known for selling phones under the Nokia brand, unveiled a new handset that will give parents more control over when and how their children get online. Social media and web browsers are also within the parent's control, a significant feature at a time of growing concern about internet content. Governments around the world are implementing measures to address potential online dangers for children, with Australia taking the most direct action by banning people under 16 from social networks. Studies for years have shown that smartphones can have an impact on kids' safety, mental health and academic performance. In Europe, France and Denmark have banned phones at schools for students under a certain age. HMD, which is based in Espoo, Finland, has built up a portfolio of devices aimed at addressing gaps in the market. Beside smartphones, the company sells a selection of simpler feature phones, including one co-branded with Mattel Inc.'s Barbie. It's also among FC Barcelona's sponsors. The Fusion X1 will be on sale in May at a price between $250 and $300, the company said. Established vendors of so-called starter smartphones for children include Pinwheel and Gabb, which have been selling such devices for more than five years. Light Phone, which caters more to adults in search of a break from smartphones, also has partnerships with various schools. Still, the market for basic feature phones is only a small fraction of the overall industry and shrinking. North America saw one of the steepest declines in sales of feature phones, decreasing 38% between 2023 and 2024, while western Europe saw an 11% drop, according to Counterpoint Research. Football Fans, Music Nerds, Kids: HMD's New Phones Cater to Many A Niche
Hot on the heels of last year's Barbie phone, HMD is back with more niche phones to appeal to those whose preferences and needs fall outside of the regular iPhone/Android flagship binary. Some companies rocked up at MWC 2025 in Barcelona this year with no new phones to show off -- but not HMD. It brought its A-game to the mobile show, with a shed-load of fresh products. HMD, short for Human Mobile Devices, is best known for making Nokia phones. Perhaps it's no surprise then that the company is once again releasing an update of classic Nokia phone -- the 3210 -- but this time in the colors of Barcelona Football Club. The company has an ongoing partnership with the elite European soccer team, announcing its first FC Barcelona-themed device last year. This latest update to the 3210 includes hidden messages from players, custom wallpapers and the classic mobile game Snake, this time played on a football pitch. The HMD Barça Fusion meanwhile is a collector's edition smartphone engraved with signatures from 11 of the club's star players. HMD also promises Easter Eggs that will appeal to fans, and you can even be woken up by the voice of one of your favourite players in the morning. Not a Barcelona fan? One of HMD's other phones might be a better fit for you. The Fusion X1 is the company's first smartphone for teens, created off the back of its Better Phones Project -- an effort to bring families into the process of designing devices. The Fusion X1 allows parents control over kids' phones with a monthly Xplora subscription. This allows parents to have control over internet browsing and social media, in addition to a "School Mode". The subscription also provides continuous location tracking at 20 second intervals with safe zones, emergency SOS calling, low battery alerts and remote device access -- your teen will be thrilled. The Fusion X1 is a smartphone, but HMD is best known for making feature phones. The feature phone market is declining, but the company says its defied the overall, and last year not only gained market share but saw double-digit growth. No wonder then that it's back at the show this year with a handful of feature phones. Along with the HMD 2660 -- a classic flip phone -- the company unveiled two phones for music lovers. The big selling point of the HMD 150 and 350 is their retro feel, combined with prominent speakers, FM radios and long battery lives make them feel like the perfect festival phones. Let's just hope no-one uses those statement speakers to play music on public transport.

Safety-first smartphone for children unveiled
A new smartphone has been unveiled that is designed to keep children safe through extensive built-in parental controls, location tracking and parental approval for messaging and call contacts. Announced by phone maker HMD – the firm behind modern Nokia devices – the Fusion X1 has been created in response to new research from the firm which found that more than half of children had been contacted online by strangers. The study, which included a survey of 25,000 children and adults in the UK, US, Germany, India, Australia and the UAE also found that one in three children had been encouraged to take conversations to private platforms, 40% of children had been sent sexual or violent content and 52% of children felt they were addicted to their screens. In response to this, and ongoing concerns about the impact of the digital world on the physical and mental well-being of young people, HMD's child-safe phone contains controls that allows parents to decide when and if social media apps are accessible. The built-in controls all include parental approval for contacts for messaging and calls, a location-tracking feature which enables parents to receive alerts when children leave designated safe areas, and a 'stay focused' mode which can block app access during school hours or bedtime to reduce distractions. The features have been developed in partnership with Norwegian tech firm Xplora, who make child-safe smartwatches, and are powered by an Xplora subscription, which is integrated into the operating system of the phone. HMD said the aim of the device was to provide parents with an alternative to the dilemma many parents currently face, which is to either give their child a fully-fledged smartphone and the more unrestricted internet access that comes with it, or to keep their child unconnected. The phone maker has committed to launching two devices in 2025 as part of The Better Phone Project – a year-long scheme which has seen the firm work with parents and experts on what to include in a child-friendly device. 'Smartphones aren't just tech – they shape childhoods, family dynamics, and society itself,' Lars Silberbauer, HMD's chief marketing officer said. 'Few companies are building solutions with children and parents in mind. We are working with parents to do exactly that. 'The Better Phone Project is proof that change is possible when families, not corporations, lead the conversation.' In addition, HMD has confirmed that it will begin rolling out a real-time harm protection feature to its phones built with British cybersecurity firm SafeToNet. It will use AI-powered tools to automatically spot and block harmful content before it reaches the user, HMD said. 'This is about giving parents real choices. The HMD Fusion X1 with Xplora and technology planned with SafeToNet are just the start,' Mr Silberbauer said. 'Together, we're pushing for a future where kids are empowered to use technology in a safer way, and parents have the tools for added protection and peace of mind.' New, dedicated phones for young users are becoming increasingly common. Last year, US firm Pinwheel launched its child-safe smartphone in the UK for the first time, which places a special parent-controlled operating system on top of the existing software of a Samsung or Google smartphone.
