Canada's Fernandez falls to Germany's Siegemund in second round at Wimbledon

The 29th seed from of Laval, Que., struggled on serve, landing just 55 per cent of her first attempts and winning 53 per cent of those points. She also double-faulted four times, failed to hit an ace and couldn't convert any of her three break-point chances. It marks Fernandez's third straight second-round departure at the All England Club. Siegemund, ranked No. 104 in the world, will next face sixth-seeded Madison Keys of the United States. Meanwhile, Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand, the No. 2 seeds, opened women's double play with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over China's Saisai Zheng and Xinyu Wang. Auger-Aliassime falls to Griekspoor in semifinal at Mallorca Championships

(Marijan Murat/dpa via AP) SANTA PONSA — Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime lost 6-4, 6-4 to Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the Mallorca Championships semifinal Friday. The Canadian hit 11 aces, won 79 per cent of his first serves and made just one double fault. Griekspoor finished with five aces and four double faults but applied more pressure in return games. He converted two of six break chances, while Auger-Aliassime was 0-for-6. It was Auger-Aliassime's third semifinal of the season and first on grass since 2021. He heads to Wimbledon as the No. 25 seed and will face Australia's James Duckworth in Monday's opening round.

Montreal's Gabriel Diallo advances to Mallorca quarterfinals with win over Djere

(Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP Photo) SANTA PONSA — Montreal's Gabriel Diallo continued his successful grass-court season with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Serbia's Laslo Djere in second-round action Tuesday at the Mallorca Championship. Diallo scored his second break of the match to go up 5-3 in the third set, then set up match point with back-to-back aces before wrapping up the win in one hour 47 minutes. The 23-year-old sixth seed won 83 per cent of first-serve points and had 10 aces while saving three of the four break points he faced. Diallo, who entered the tournament with a career-high No. 41 ranking, is expected to break into the top 40 after this tournament. He will next face fourth seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. Griekspoor defeated Diallo in the second round of this year's French Open in the only other match between the players. Diallo, who picked up his first ATP Tour tournament win earlier in the grass-court season at the Libema Open in the Netherlands, is preparing for his first appearance in the Wimbledon main draw after falling in qualifying at the past two events. He has played in three straight Grand Slam main draws since losing in the second round of qualifying at the All England Club in 2024. Montreal's Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., both lost in the Round of 16 at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany. Auger-Aliassime served 12 aces but dropped a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision to Karen Khachanov. Shapovalov fell in a tight three-set battle, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (5), to Italy's Flavio Cobolli despite eight aces and five break points. Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov were also scheduled to face off Thursday in the doubles semifinal against Italy's Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. In London at the HSBC Championships, Montreal's Gabriel Diallo was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by Jiri Lehecka, who won 96 per cent of his first-serve points. Fernandez faced nine break points in the match, but saved all but one. She broke Bucsa three times on six chances in the match that took one hour 43 minutes to complete. The 22-year-old from Laval, Que., improved to 3-0 against Bucsa after previous victories at the Paris Olympics and this year's Australian Open. Fernandez, the fifth seed in Nottingham, England, will next face Dayana Yastremska on Friday at the WTA 250 grass-court event. Fernandez is 2-0 against the 46th-ranked Ukrainian. The Canadian entered the event ranked 30th in the world and evened her record this season at 14-14 with Wednesday's win.
