KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Political leaders today paid their final respects to former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who passed away yesterday morning at the age of 76. DAP leaders M. Kulasegaran and Teresa Kok expressed their condolences, calling his death a significant loss to the nation. 'In Parliament, he was honest and frank. Even though he was from the opposing side, he was always accommodating and good-natured,' said Kulasegaran at Palanivel's family home in Bangsar. Seputeh MP Teresa Kok remembered him as a gentleman during his tenure in government. 'I had a good relationship with both him and Tun Samy Vellu. Whenever I faced issues in my constituency, they stepped in to help. I'm grateful for all his advice. His passing is truly a loss to the nation. May he rest in peace,' she said. Palanivel, who also served as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, died yesterday morning at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. The former MIC president led the party from 2010 to 2015, strengthening its influence within Barisan Nasional (BN) and expanding educational opportunities for ethnic Indians through the Maju Institute of Educational Development and the founding of AIMST University. He was first elected as the Hulu Selangor MP in 1990, serving four consecutive terms before losing the seat in 2008. He later returned to Parliament in 2013 as the Cameron Highlands MP. MORE TO COME

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president and federal minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel has died at the age of 76. He died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am today, according to confirmation from party sources. Palanivel was born March 1, 1949 in Penang. A veteran politician and long-serving member of the MIC, he became the party's eighth president on Dec 6, 2010, succeeding (the late) Tun S. Samy Vellu. His political journey began decades earlier, including serving as Samy Vellu's secretary in the early 1990s, before rising through the ranks. He served as the party's treasurer-general from 1991 to 1994, vice president from 1995 to 2005, deputy president from 2006 to 2010 and president from 2010 to 2015. Palanivel began his professional life as a broadcast journalist, working with RTM and Bernama. He joined Bernama as a journalist in 1977 and later became the economic news editor. Palanivel also held various ministerial positions and played a significant role in representing the Indian community in Malaysia's Barisan Nasional coalition. In his ministerial roles, he served as the Deputy Rural Development Minister from 1999 to 2004; Deputy Welfare and Family Development Minister (2004 to 2008); Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister (2008 to 2011); Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Indian Affairs (2011 to 2013) and as the Natural Resources and Environment Minister from 2013 to 2015. In his role as a member of parliament, Palanivel served the Hulu Selangor constituency for four terms until 2008, after winning the seat in the 1990 General Election. He also served as the Cameron Highlands MP from 2013 to 2018. His funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today extended his condolences to the family of former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who died this morning at the age of 76. In a brief message on Facebook, Anwar said Palanivel left an indelible mark on the nation through his decades of public service. 'His contributions to championing the Indian community, rural development and environmental conservation are deeply valued. May his family find strength in this time of loss,' he wrote. Palanivel, who was also a former minister, died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8am. He held several senior posts since entering politics in 1990, including serving as MP for Hulu Selangor and later Cameron Highlands. Separately, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir described Palanivel's death as a significant loss to the nation, particularly to MIC and the coalition. 'He was a respected and principled leader who contributed greatly to national unity and the wellbeing of Malaysians from all backgrounds,' the Umno leader was quoted as saying by national news agency Bernama. Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan from PKR also paid tribute, calling Palanivel 'a respected voice for the Indian community' who had championed education, economic empowerment and unity. Palanivel led MIC from 2010 to 2015 and played a key role in strengthening the party's influence within BN. He also played a key role in expanding educational opportunities for ethnic Indians through Maju Institute of Educational Development, the educational arm of the MIC, and the founding of AIMST University.
