IIT-ISM inks MoU with GAIL for piped natural gas on campus

Dhanbad: In step towards sustainable energy solutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GAIL Gas Limited for the development of a piped natural gas (PNG) network on its campus on Monday. This initiative aligns with the Govt of India's vision of transitioning the nation into a gas-based economy. Deputy director of the IIT-ISM, Dheeraj Kumar, said, "The partnership aims to establish a robust PNG infrastructure across the campus, supplying clean and efficient energy to residential quarters, hostels, mess facilities, and canteens. Natural gas is a safer, economical, convenient, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels, offering significant advantages in terms of handling and sustainability. " As per the MoU, GAIL Gas Limited will be responsible for laying the pipeline infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity for both domestic and commercial consumers within the campus. Each PNG connection will be individually metered, with billing conducted on a bimonthly basis according to actual consumption. The initiative is expected to serve as a benchmark for other academic institutions pursuing sustainable development goals. The implementation of the PNG network is not only expected to enhance energy efficiency but also reduce the institute's carbon footprint, supporting the broader national agenda for cleaner energy.
