The Scottish Highlands village with sandy beach perfect for August day out

It is also home to a restaurant that serves up freshly caught seafood. July is over and August is upon us, which means the end of summer is in sight. You still have time to get out and make the most of the season before autumn rolls around, however. If you have yet to head out on a staycation or a day trip in the Scottish Highlands this summer, now is your chance. If you are unsure where to head, the Daily Record's latest Village of the Week is a true gem. Once per week, we choose one town or village from across Scotland and do a deep dive into what makes it stand out. This time, we have chosen the village and civil parish of Gairloch in Wester Ross in the northwest Highlands. Gairloch is an ideal destination for anybody looking for a quiet getaway this summer. It offers a treasure trove of stunning scenery for visitors, namely its incredible beach. Also known as Gaineamh Mhòr, Gairloch Beach is situated on the outskirts of the village. Nestled amidst mountains and moorland, the secluded sandy bay offers lovely views out over the nearby islands. Thanks to its isolated and northern location, the beach is pretty much undisturbed by humans. It is a great spot for a family picnic, or to watch the sun go down. Another great place to head for a hike is the Gairloch Waterfall. The soothing sounds of the rushing water make it a perfect spot if you need to clear your head. Elsewhere, in Gairloch itself, one of your first destinations should be the GALE Centre. It includes a café, a shop, and an independent tourist information point—offering magnificent views out over the bay. Another must-visit attraction in the village is the Gairloch Museum. Housed in a renovated nuclear bunker, the fascinating centre is dedicated to the history and culture of the surrounding area. Meanwhile, in terms of food and accommodation, one of the most popular destinations in the area is The Old Inn. The hotel serves up sustainably caught seafood delivered daily from the local harbour. Read on for some images that show why Gairloch is worth a visit this August.
