GCC-Stat: GCC countries record $587.8bln in nominal GDP by end of Q4 2024
MUSCAT: The latest data released by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf ('GCC-Stat') revealed that the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reached US$587.8 billion by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, up from US$579 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, reflecting a growth rate of 1.5%. The data indicated that the contribution of non-oil activities to the GCC's nominal GDP reached 77.9% by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, compared to 22.1% from oil activities. The manufacturing sector contributed 12.5% to the GDP, while wholesale and retail trade accounted for 9.9%. The contribution of the construction sector reached 8.3%, while public administration and defence logged 7.5%, finance and insurance 7%, and real estate activities 5.7%. Meanwhile, other non-oil activities contributed 27%.

GCC reaches sustainable development goals in hazardous waste recycling
MUSCAT, Oman, July 20: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have successfully met the sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to recycling and reusing hazardous waste, according to data released Sunday by the Statistical Centre of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat). The report revealed that the recycling and reuse rate of hazardous waste in the GCC reached 30 percent in 2023, enabling the region to achieve the 12th SDG, which focuses on responsible consumption and production. Furthermore, the cumulative number of national reports submitted by GCC countries under the Basel Convention on the Control of Hazardous Wastes totaled 87. By the end of 2023, the GCC countries collected an estimated 262.7 million tons of waste, marking a significant increase of 153.7 percent compared to 2019. Of this total, 192 million tons were treated, reflecting a 128.5 percent rise. Notably, the per capita household waste decreased by 17.4 percent to 1.4 kilograms per person per day during the same period. The report highlighted that 99.2 percent of non-hazardous waste was collected across the GCC, while 95.8 percent of hazardous waste was exported globally for treatment. This treatment primarily involved recycling or recovery of metals and metal compounds. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, hazardous waste collected from the healthcare sector declined by 11.4 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. The GCC countries also made significant advancements in medical waste management infrastructure, increasing the number of incinerators to approximately 23 sites—a 27.8 percent growth from 2022. The design capacity of these incineration facilities surged by 123.9 percent, reaching 127.5 thousand metric tons. In contrast, hazardous waste from the industrial sector rose by 23.8 percent in 2023 compared to 2022. Meanwhile, municipal household waste collection decreased over the past three years, falling from a peak of 35.5 million tons in 2020 to roughly 30.8 million tons in 2023. Agricultural waste collection also saw a notable increase of 44 percent in 2023, rising to 2.5 million tons compared to 2 million tons in 2022 and 1.7 million tons in 2019. Additionally, municipal waste generated by other economic activities increased from 11.9 million tons in 2019 to 14.3 million tons in 2023. According to the 'GCC Waste Management Market Analysis 2019-2023' report by Mordor Intelligence, the waste management market in GCC countries is valued at approximately $68.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $97.4 billion by 2030. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 7.4 percent during this period. GCC-Stat, based in the Sultanate of Oman, serves as the official statistical authority for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. It is tasked with providing data and enhancing statistical and information technology services for national planning agencies.

GCC workshop strengthens digital economy data systems
MUSCAT: A regional workshop on e-commerce and digital economy statistics commenced in Muscat on Monday, bringing together experts and officials from across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to enhance statistical capabilities and promote data-driven policy development. Organised by the Gulf Statistical Center (GCC-Stat), the two-day event is part of wider efforts to support economic integration and improve the accuracy and transparency of digital economy data in the region. Intisar bint Abdullah al Wahaibi, Director General of GCC-Stat, said the rapid rise of e-commerce has transformed global economic activity, and the Gulf region has been an active participant in this shift. This growth has been supported by robust digital infrastructure, population expansion, and ambitious national strategies for digital transformation. She noted that GCC-Stat is working through its Trade Cooperation Committee to develop a unified mechanism for measuring e-commerce across the GCC, as part of implementing the GCC Unified Strategic Framework for E-Commerce. Dr Hajar al Hadawi, Director-General of the Digital Cooperation Organisation, highlighted the importance of accurate and timely digital statistics in understanding the evolving business environment. he stated that such data are crucial for assessing the impact of digital transformation, identifying challenges, and creating opportunities to stimulate innovation, empower SMEs, generate employment, and promote inclusion in the digital economy. Dr al Hadawi also expressed interest in deeper cooperation with national statistical bodies in the GCC to develop common indicators and regional benchmarks that align with global standards. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global e-commerce sales reached $27 trillion in 2022, marking a 60 percent increase from 2016. In the GCC, the e-commerce market is expected to grow to $33.3 billion by 2025 and $46.1 billion by 2029, expanding at an average rate of 10 per cent annually. The first day of the workshop featured two key sessions. The first session focused on defining and measuring e-commerce and digital economic activities, outlining how data can be collected and analysed based on transactions conducted through digital platforms. The second session introduced a GCC-Stat project aimed at building a unified statistical database for the digital economy. It also reviewed current practices among GCC countries, available data sets, and gaps in national capacities for digital economy measurement. GCC countries are on track to significantly expand their tourism sector, with visitor spending projected to reach US$223.7 billion by 2034, according to new figures released by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat). In 2023 alone, international visitors spent US$135.5 billion across the region, marking a sharp 28.9% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This surge highlights the region's accelerating momentum in attracting global tourists and boosting its non-oil economy. Tourism's growing economic role is also reflected in its projected contribution to total exports, which is expected to climb to 13.4% by 2034. The report also points to continued progress across key tourism indicators, underscoring the GCC's strategic focus on the sector as part of its broader economic diversification efforts. Safety and security remain major strengths, with the GCC topping the 2024 Safety and Security Index for the Middle East and North Africa. All member states scored above the regional average of 5.86 out of 7. In addition, GCC nations ranked among the top six in the Arab region for passport strength, further supporting their push to attract international travelers and strengthen global mobility.
