'Inspired by eagle shape': How 20cm-long F1 car hit 80kmph on Yas Marina track
A group of students from a Dubai school are making waves ahead of the F1 in Schools™ UAE National Finals with a miniature racing machine that blends smart engineering with real-world racing inspiration. Their car, designed and built entirely by the student team known as Team Founders, is a sleek aerodynamic marvel and it's built for one thing — speed, reaching up to 80kmph. The team's entry, developed under the rigorous guidelines of the F1 in Schools™ competition, is powered by a single 8-gram CO₂ cartridge. When launched, it sprints down a 20m track in just over a second. Hannan Ali, head of enterprise at Team Founders, a six-member team, shared insights into the team's design process, as they gear up for the international STEM competition. He said, 'The dimensions of the car are about 209mm long, 61mm wide and 70mm tall in accordance with the regulations. Additionally, the car weighs 50.1g which is just above the minimum weight,' said the Year 12 student at GEMS Founders School - Al Barsha. 'The key factors that influenced our car's design were the minimisation of drag, reduction of friction in the wheel system, and overall stability. We took inspiration from nature — specifically the streamlined shape of an eagle — as well as winning F1 in Schools teams and real-world motorsports like F1 and NASCAR.' To bring their concept to life, the team turned to professional-grade tools. The car was fully designed in Fusion 360, a powerful 3D CAD/CAM software platform widely used in the engineering industry. They then ran simulations in Ansys CFD, a leading computational fluid dynamics tool that helped them fine-tune the car's aerodynamic profile. 'Ansys gave us incredibly realistic data,' said Hannan. 'With guidance from NIO engineers, we were able to navigate complex simulations and refine our design to a professional standard.' For fabrication, the team followed competition regulations by machining the car body out of polyurethane modeling foam. To further enhance performance, they used ceramic bearings, which offered lower rolling resistance compared to traditional options. But it's their 'Dual Bearing System' that truly sets this car apart. 'We use two different bearings per wheel — one between the axle and wheel, and another between the axle and support,' said Hannan. 'This dramatically reduces energy loss and improves race time. It's our most innovative feature to date.' Assembly was just as meticulous as the design and fabrication stages. The team employed custom 3D-printed alignment jigs to ensure everything was perfectly placed. They also went through multiple rounds of sanding, painting, and bonding to create a car that looks as fast as it moves. 'Each step took days of refinement,' Hannan said. 'Achieving the required balance, smoothness, and regulatory compliance isn't just about aesthetics; it directly affects speed and performance.' Testing at Yas Marina Circuit Testing their car at the Yas Marina Circuit, the team had the rare opportunity to trial their creation on an official F1 in Schools™ racetrack. The experience not only validated their engineering work but also connected them with local experts and officials. 'Testing at Yas Marina was a highlight, not just for performance validation, but for the incredible feedback and encouragement we received.' The journey hasn't been without its challenges. Mastering industry-standard tools, ensuring millimeter-precision, and innovating within strict competition rules demanded relentless effort and adaptability. 'Every fraction of a millimeter counts,' said Hannan. 'We had to innovate constantly to remain compliant and competitive.'

UAE: Staggered dismissals, shorter hours mark first full school day of Ramadan
Monday marked the first full school day after Ramadan began on March 1. Some UAE schools implemented staggered dismissals on the first day to make it more convenient for families to pick up children, as the roads typically experience congestion during drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups. Ben Cooper, Primary Principal, GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, said, 'The first day always comes with adjustments, but overall, it was smooth and successful. Families are settling into the new routine, and the delayed start helps younger students manage their mornings. We have a staggered dismissal to ease traffic, allowing parents to pick up students more conveniently.' Copper added, 'Attendance was relatively normal, though punctuality adjustments were made to accommodate Ramadan traffic. We've extended registration times slightly to support families adapting to the new schedule.' Most schools have adapted to a shorter school day, 8am-1pm, with staff working 7.30am-1.30pm in line with Ramadan hours. During this period, schools are prioritising revision and reinforcement rather than introducing new lessons. Cooper added, 'Lessons are more focused on consolidation and review rather than introducing new topics. Despite shorter lessons, we continue to offer a broad curriculum, including PE and specialist subjects like swimming, ensuring students remain active, while efficient transitions between lessons help maximise learning time.' Mohammedali Kottakkulam, Principal, The Central School Dubai, said, "We implemented a few key changes during Ramadan. Being a two-shift school, we have implemented reduced school hours for both shifts. There are arrangements for students to perform their Zuhr prayer in the school. We have taken great care to ensure all religious activities take place smoothly and students spend quality time in for it." Late start but gates open early Some schools have opted for a later start but are opening gates early to accommodate working parents. Albie Huyser, Principal/CEO, GEMS Founders School – Masdar City, said, 'In accordance with ADEK regulations, we have adapted our school timings to support our fasting families. Although school starts at 9am, we open our gates just after 8am to accommodate families who need to drop off their children at school before work. 'Students still enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum, and we have adapted PE lessons that still offer fun physical activity but also take into consideration the wellbeing of our students who fast.' Huyser reiterated that they also had impressive attendance across all year groups, with students excited to talk about their experiences and observance of fasting. 'We had a wonderful first day, starting with a whole-school Ramadan assembly that set the tone for the rest of the day. Our parents and students are very happy to be back in school, with no issues raised,' added Huyser. Institutions conduct examinations Meanwhile, certain Indian curriculum schools are holding their final or board examinations. Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal, Credence High School, Dubai, said, 'Our administration shared the updated Ramadan schedule with all stakeholders last week. Today, students and staff dispersed at noon as per the new schedule. Our students diligently participated in their scheduled final exam assessments, showcasing their dedication to academic excellence.' She added, 'Oention that our attendance on the first day was outstanding, with students and staff arriving on time, demonstrating their commitment to a successful and productive school year. We have not encountered any significant challenges thus far and are committed to ensuring a smooth transition throughout the remainder of the holy month.' Mohammedali Kottakkulam said, "As the school is conducting year-end examinations, the student strength is full, with the only exemption being medical leave. There was an unusual rush on the roads, leading to a few school buses reaching late school due to the shift in timing. Students using public transport also faced delays as they had to adjust to the new system due to the Ramadan change. We expect this to settle down soon, as today was the first day. The school is committed to smooth functioning during this period."

UAE: Ahead of Ramadan, schools reduce hours, complete syllabus, hold events
Some UAE schools have already completed their academic syllabus for the year in anticipation of Ramadan, which is expected to begin by March 1. Indian curriculum schools, which typically end their academic year by March end, have finished their syllabus, with institutions gearing up for the holy month. Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal, Credence High School, said, "Our school has already completed the syllabus for Grades 2 to 12, allowing students to focus on their year-end examinations without added pressure. Grades 10 and 12 are taking board exams, while other grades are engaged in revision sessions." Special Ramadan activities Principals highlighted that as Ramadan approached, a sense of unity and generosity swept through the school, creating a welcoming atmosphere. "Our lobby is beautifully decorated, reflecting the significance of this holy month. We have planned special Ramadan activities for Pre-KG to Grade 1 students, ensuring they learn about the values and traditions associated with this special time. Additionally, our charity drive programmes encourage students to embrace the spirit of giving and compassion," added Thapar. Several events and activities have been organised to celebrate the upcoming month of Ramadan. "Islamic studies sessions to deepen students' understanding of the holy month and its significance. School-wide iftar gatherings that foster a sense of community and togetherness and Ramadan-themed art competitions for younger students to encourage creativity and artistic expression." Adjusting pace of lessons School leaders also reiterated that they have communicated the shortened hours to families but will operate with the same timetable structure each week. Ian Plant, Principal/CEO of GEMS Founders School – Dubai South, said, "We have not accelerated the syllabus ahead of Ramadan. We intentionally put wellbeing first and feel that despite the shortened hours during the month, we can cover the content required for each subject in our curriculum. "We must adjust the pace of lessons and topics, but we will continue to place wellbeing at the heart of our daily practices. We acknowledge the importance of reflection, calm, and serenity that are at the heart of Ramadan." The school is making an effort to foster a sense of community and encourage a love for reading. With Ramadan just around the corner, headteachers also reiterated that such an event sets the tone for reflection and togetherness, aligning perfectly with the spirit of the season. "We are holding a Family Reading Picnic this week in which our parents have been invited to the school to read with their children. This event has been designed to support us in continuing to raise the importance of reading for pleasure and purpose across the curriculum and at home," added Plant. Connection with the Holy Quran Some institutions are launching the 'Ramadan Challenge', a series of daily activities designed to engage families in a meaningful exploration of Islamic practices and cultural heritage. "This challenge aims to strengthen communal ties and enhance spiritual growth throughout the holy month," added Belle Wagner, Academy Principal, GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis. "Furthermore, we are excited to offer Online Tajweed Classes for parents. These sessions are tailored to help our adult community members refine their Quranic recitation skills, fostering a deeper connection with the Holy Quran and enhancing their spiritual journey during Ramadan." School heads emphasised that students can successfully balance their spiritual and academic journeys when approached with the right mindset. "Regarding our broader curriculum, our objectives are carefully pre-mapped to seamlessly accommodate the holy month, ensuring smooth progression. By planning our objectives in advance, we are able to maintain our teaching schedule without added pressure. Our primary focus is to keep the curriculum flexible while aligning it with the cultural significance of the month," added Wagner.
