Final Recipient Announced As Round Two Of Innovation Fund Opens

Press Release – New Zealand Government Once fully operational, Tends new service is expected to deliver more than 15,000 sessions to more than 5,000 people, which is another significant step towards the Governments commitment to strengthen peoples access to mental health and addiction … Minister for Mental Health The Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey has announced round two of the Government's Mental Health and Addiction Community Sector Innovation Fund has opened today. 'The bottom line for this Government is to ensure we are delivering timely quality mental health and addiction support to those who are bravely reaching out for help in their greatest time of need,' Mr Doocey says. 'I am excited for community organisations across the country to have another opportunity to access funding. This time, there will be more smaller grassroots organisations that will be eligible to apply for funding due to the recently announced lowered matched funding limit required. 'It's also my pleasure to announce that Tend Health Ltd is the ninth and final recipient from the fund's first round to set up a new digital primary mental health and addiction service. 'The new service aims to make it easier for people to get primary mental health support, particularly those who are not enrolled in general practice or have difficulty accessing general practice. 'A multi-disciplinary mental health and addictions team will deliver support virtually and with extended operating hours, giving people more flexible access to help when they need it. 'Once fully operational, Tend's new service is expected to deliver more than 15,000 sessions to more than 5,000 people, which is another significant step towards the Government's commitment to strengthen people's access to mental health and addiction support. The initiative will receive $1.97 million of funding over two years from the Government which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Tend to total just under $4 million. 'I am also proud that funding from round one has already enabled eight other organisations to start delivering new and expanded initiatives. They include MATES in Construction, the Mental Health Foundation, Youthline, Wellington City Mission, Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust, the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, Women's Refuge, and Just a Thought. 'By supporting these initiatives, we're ensuring that people across New Zealand can access the support they need, while also working towards the Government's goal of growing the clinical workforce and reducing wait times for mental health and addiction services. 'I encourage all eligible providers to take up the opportunity to apply for funding and scale-up their work to benefit the many people in the communities they serve,' Mr Doocey says. Notes: The Request for Proposals for round two of the Mental Health and Addiction Community Sector Innovation Fund has been released on the Government Electronic Tenders Site (GETS) here. The match funding requirement for round one required $250,000 per application, round two requires $100,000 per application.

'UAE leading the way in ensuring AI deployment is secure, accountable and responsibly governed'

6 May 2025 01:14 SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) and the UAE Public Prosecution launched the inaugural Governance of Emerging Technologies Summit (GETS), running until May 6 at the St. Regis Abu Dhabi. More than 500 leaders around the world gather at this event to set an ethical and legal framework for artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, as well as Web3 technologies. Aletihad spoke to several speakers and participants at the summit, including Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of the UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC), who spoke about the growth of AI in the UAE. "In the UAE, thanks to our wise leadership, we are firmly on track to becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence, with major initiatives such as integrating AI into education and expanding its use across daily life and government services." Acknowledging the challenges that come with such rapid progress, Dr. Al Kuwaiti noted: "Indeed, there are challenges and threats, and we referred in our speech today to some cyber-crimes, such as cyber-terrorism and cyber-wars, which could affect the stability of infrastructure if it is hacked or sensitive data is tampered with." He commented on the pace at which the tech landscape is evolving: "In light of rapid development, we see new technologies every day: today artificial intelligence, tomorrow quantum computing, then cloud computing, and finally autonomous artificial intelligence systems, which are being closely monitored by key international agencies." Dr. Al Kuwaiti further explained how the UAE is already laying the groundwork for the Fifth Industrial Revolution through a national strategy of agile governance and innovation. He added that this strategy also focuses on strengthening cybersecurity, advancing autonomous technologies, as well as building global partnerships to ensure both progress and digital sovereignty. As a strategic partner of the event, the UAE Public Prosecution highlighted a range of pioneering technological initiatives, "such as an intelligence legal assistant that provides accurate and instant responses", said Khalifa Al Hammadi, Assistant Public Prosecutor. The digitisation of legislation converts legal texts into analysable digital formats, he explained. Al Hammadi added: "The digital criminal system which manages cases electronically from the moment a report is filled until a judgement is issued, and the smart prosecution gateway which enables the resolution of minor criminal cases at border points before travel, these projects reflect our vision of enhancing technology and artificial intelligence to serve people and enhance the efficiency of the judicial system." Dr. Abrar Abdulnabi, Director of AI at in Abu Dhabi, drew attention to the urgent need for regulating artificial intelligence development and deployment during her participation at the summit. "The whole summit is about how to govern AI implementation and practices. The UAE is making an international call to action: we need to do something about how we govern AI development and implementation," she said. She noted that the event's overarching theme revolves around creating systems that are "transparent, fair, and implemented without bias", adding, "You have heard many speakers echoing this same concern."

Women's Refuge Receives Funding Boost

Press Release – New Zealand Government The Womens Refuge will receive $540,000 from the Government across two years, which will be matched by the Womens Refuge to make a total of $1,080,000 over a two-year period. Minister for Mental Health Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey is pleased to announce today that the Women's Refuge is the latest recipient of the Government's Mental Health and Addiction Innovation Fund. 'Women's Refuge do incredibly important work in our communities. They provide a safe space for women and children experiencing family violence, some of whom may be experiencing mental health and addiction challenges. I am delighted that the organisation will receive funding from the Government to help deliver mental health and addiction support to those in need,' Mr Doocey says. 'I am pleased the funding announced today will support 250 advocates based within the 41 Women's Refuges across New Zealand with mental health and addiction training, advisory support from clinical specialists and strengthen referral pathways so clients can access local mental health and addiction services more efficiently. 'The feedback I often hear about mental health services is that it is too hard to navigate and know where to go in a time of need. This funding will enable Women's Refuge to upskill their staff on mental health and addiction as well as improve connections with local services and referral pathways and join up the system to make it more accessible to those in need. 'Over the past five years, Women's Refuge has supported an average of 15,000 clients per year. This funding will strengthen the workforce and improve referral pathways for those women and children who are accessing Women's Refuge services. 'Initiatives like this is exactly what the Innovation Fund was designed for, and this support will only grow as we move into the second round of funding.' The Women's Refuge will receive $540,000 from the Government across two years, which will be matched by the Women's Refuge to make a total of $1,080,000 over a two-year period. In round one of the Innovation Fund the Government have so far supported MATES in Construction, The Mental Health Foundation, YouthLine, Wellington City Mission, Rotorua Youth One Stop Shop and the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. 'I am committed to doing everything possible to bring down mental health and addiction wait times in New Zealand. Partnering with organisations such as Women's Refuge through the Innovation Fund to deliver innovative projects and initiatives supports the Government's priority focus of increasing access to mental health and addiction support for Kiwis,' Mr Doocey says. Note: A future procurement opportunity for round two of the Fund was released on the Government Electronic Tender site (GETS) last week and a Request for Proposal is scheduled to be released in May 2025.
