Error message in Chinese on metro display sparks hacking scare

Ahmedabad: Panic briefly spread among commuters on the East-West corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail on Thursday afternoon after a public display screen at the Rabari Colony station showed an error message with Chinese characters and the announcement system abruptly shut down. However, the metro rail services were not disrupted, and operations continued without delay. The unusual combination of a "404 error" along with Chinese script led several passengers to suspect that the metro system had been hacked. However, officials from the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) denied any security breach and attributed the incident to a technical glitch. "There was a temporary fault in the public information display system, which uses Chinese hardware. Simultaneously, the announcement system failed due to a separate technical issue," an official said. GMRC clarified that the two incidents were unrelated. The display error may have been triggered by physical interference, such as someone accidentally disturbing the connecting wire, while the announcement system's failure was being treated as an isolated technical fault. "There is no evidence of hacking or any external breach," the officials assured.

Power supply cables on Metro network stolen in Gandhinagar, second such incident in 2 weeks

According to officials of the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRC), services on the route were not affected because the Metro was not operational at the time of the theft and the issue was resolved before trains commenced at 7 am. The power cable theft, the second such incident in two weeks, took place in the early hours of Monday. Ahmedabad, Jun 3 (PTI) Unidentified persons stole power cables worth Rs 17.85 lakh from tracks between two Metro train stations near Gandhinagar city, a police official said on Tuesday. An FIR was registered with the Infocity police station of Gandhinagar on Monday after GMRC section engineer Mayur Joshi submitted a complaint about the theft of copper cables, which are laid alongside the tracks to power Metro trains. 'We have registered an FIR and started our investigation. No one has been arrested yet,' said sub-inspector of the Infocity police station, Dhaval Singh. The theft took place between Koba Circle and Juna Koba stations, which fall on Motera to Gandhinagar route, said the FIR. When a Metro train came to a sudden halt at around 3 am between these two stations, Joshi was called to the spot to look into the issue as the train was not getting electric supply. During inspection, Joshi learnt someone had stolen 700 metres of power cables worth Rs 17.85 lakh after cutting and detaching them from the brackets, it said. This was the second incident wherein power cables of the Metro network were stolen. On May 22, Metro services experienced disruption on a route in Ahmedabad city after unidentified persons stole 500 metres of power cables worth Rs 9 lakh from the tracks near Shahpur station. GMRC mulls cams, guards after cable theft

Ahmedabad: Metro power cable theft that disrupted services on Thursday has spurred the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) into having CCTV cameras and security guards on the Shahpur side of the line. Services between Apparel Park and Old High Court were suspended for nearly seven hours after a thief stole 500m of electrical cables near Shahpur station, leading to a power outage. The disruption began when the first train from Vastral to Thaltej Gam passed Shahpur station, and staff reported power outage. The train's momentum carried it past the affected area to safety before the services were suspended. Twenty cables, each 25m long and costing about Rs 9 lakh were stolen. After this incident, authorities plan to install CCTV cameras and deploy security guards in areas where the underground metro ends. Authorities said that two vulnerable points are one near the Apparel Park in Maninagar, while the other is Shahpur area, where the train emerges from the underground route. "However, the area in Apparel Park is land owned by govt authorities and has round-the-clock security. Hence, we are actively thinking of installing CCTV cameras with lights or deploying guards in the area so that there is no repeat of Thursday's incident," said senior officials. As an immediate measure, GMRC is now planning to deploy a security guard until a final decision on CCTV cams is taken. Officials said that police and GMRC are trying to find out the persons behind the theft, adding that those involved may have had technical knowledge since the cables were stolen at small intervals. Power cable theft disrupts metro rail ops on A'bad's east-west corridor for 7 hrs

Ahmedabad: Metro rail services between Apparel Park and Old High Court were suspended for nearly seven hours on Thursday after a thief stole 500 metres of electrical cables near Shahpur station, leading to a power outage. The disruption began when the first train from Vastral to Thaltej Gam passed Shahpur station and staff reported a power outage. The train's momentum carried it past the affected area to safety before the services were suspended. Later, operations between Apparel Park in Maninagar and Old High Court were halted while the Gujarat Metro Rail Service Authority filed a complaint with Shahpur police. Services resumed at 1.30pm after replacement cables were installed. A statement issued by the GMRC said, "Train services were affected in the morning on the east-west corridor between Apparel Park to Old High Court due to theft of cables last night." "However, train services were available between Vastral Gam and Apparel Park and between Old High Court and Thaltej Gam stations. There was no effect on regular train services on the north-south corridor. GMRC staff, with the help of Ahmedabad police and other contracted agencies, replaced the cables and restored the services," it added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Tanishka Patel, a student who travels from Vastral to Commerce College, boarded her usual train only to be taken back to Vastral. "I had to get down at Vastral and hire a private vehicle," she said. A govt officer travelling from Rabari Colony to Thaltej criticized the lack of communication, saying there was no information or announcement from the metro authorities. He said that ticket counters continued selling tickets to Old High Court despite knowing that the services were suspended. Officials acknowledged that public announcements were delayed until later in the day.
