GMCH-32: Newly constructed block to be inaugurated on Aug 8, to decongest gynaecology dept

The newly constructed 283-bed Emergency-cum-Trauma Block at GMCH-32 is all set to be inaugurated on August 8, to coincide with the 11th convocation, promising to reduce overload on the existing emergency units in the city, improve patient care and ensure better utilisation of resources. In the hospital's history, the A Block, where 24-hour emergency services are provided to patients, was the first to become functional, and since 1996, there has been no renovation of this block. 'With the new state-of-the-art trauma block ready for patients, the first step will be to renovate the area, with the engineering and fire safety departments already in action to ensure the latest facilities, amenities and safety. Once this is complete, we will start the process of decongesting our gynaecology department, which also comprises the labour room, and witnesses patients from across the region, including the large migrant population that we have. We will be utilising this space for the expansion of the department, and also add more beds to ease rush. We are making efforts to provide more speciality and super-speciality services. The process of space creation is a dynamic one,' said Prof A K Attri, Director-Principal, GMCH-32. The gynaecology department of the hospital has 100 beds, with 10 beds added way back in 2017. The number of patients in the gynaecology department is very high, and despite the increase in beds, there are not enough beds for pregnant women. More than 5,000 women deliver in GMCH every year, and when the number of cases is higher, two women have to be adjusted on one bed, with the occupancy rate almost 200 per cent. The hospital receives delivery cases from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Uttarakhand, UP, and despite the shortage of beds, the effort is to provide treatment. As per doctors, the gynaecology department of GMCH-32 has the highest number of deliveries, followed by GMSH-16 and then PGI. Both PGI and GMCH-32 will have exclusive Mother and Child Centres, with work on the project of GMCH-32 having started in 2018, but was delayed due to COVID and has now restarted. With a budget of about Rs 73 crore, the centre, which will be open in about two years, will have two basements and four floors and have a facility of 251 beds, with the latest facilities and services under one roof. Dr Attri said it will decrease infant and mother mortality rate. PGI's Advanced Mother and Child Care Centre, where work is in full swing and may be inaugurated at the end of this year, will be equipped with the latest technologies and offer world-class facilities in both maternal and neonatal care. A human milk bank, advanced infertility treatment, robotic surgery, critical care obstetrics, high-risk maternity unit, foetal medicine unit, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, and reproductive endocrinology unit will be part of the centre. Here, there will be a modern developmentally supportive and family-centred level IV NICU designed as per current International NICU design specifications, a family-centred Kangaroo Mother Care ward, and a comprehensive high-risk follow-up programme. A long-needed facility, the Advanced Paediatric Centre at GMSH-16 was inaugurated last year. The 32-bedded facility offers state-of-the-art specialised care, featuring a 12-bedded hybrid ICU unit comprising ventilator beds and high-dependency unit beds. The centre includes 20 oxygen-supported beds and features ECG, echocardiography, and ultrasonography, all under one roof, so that parents don't have to go anywhere for these tests and their children receive the best care. There are 24-hour services like blood transfusion, sample collection, nebulisation etc, for critical patients, and this advanced centre has eased the burden on PGI.

Chandigarh to get a new Emergency and Trauma Centre at GMCH-32

Chandigarh's three government hospitals offer both emergency and trauma services, but the rising number of patients has put immense pressure on the current system. At PGI, there are 100 beds each for emergency and trauma care, but on average, 250 to 300 patients are treated daily. In GMSH, Sector 16, there are only 70 beds, yet over 100 patients come in every day. The situation is even more serious at GMCH-32, where there are just 50 emergency beds, but about 120 patients are admitted every day. This shows that the healthcare system is overburdened and handling two to three times more patients than its actual capacity. Due to a lack of space, patients often have to be treated on stretchers or wait in corridors. To enhance healthcare, which will benefit not just Chandigarh, but also surrounding areas, the new Emergency-cum-Trauma Centre at GMCH-32 will finally open doors to patients. Delayed due to Covid, the centre will be inaugurated on July 28. The new block is expected to bring a major transformation in trauma and emergency services. As of now, the combined emergency and trauma capacity in all three hospitals is about 320 beds, but patient load remains two to three times higher on most days. The newly constructed 283-bed Emergency-cum-Trauma Block at GMCH-32 is ready and will further strengthen Chandigarh's healthcare services. This state-of-the-art building includes everything needed in a modern trauma centre, an ICU for critical patients, separate wards for stable cases, isolation units for infectious diseases, and a separate ambulatory care unit for patients who can move around. The effort of the centre is to ensure timely treatment for trauma patients, reduce overload on existing emergency units, improve patient recovery and care, and better coordinate medical staff and resources. To speed up and improve diagnosis, the facility includes digital X-ray, CT scan, MRI, and clinical laboratories. For emergency surgeries, there are two major operation theatres and one minor OT, along with a post-operative ward. A two-level basement parking lot has also been built, which can accommodate 60 cars and 144 two-wheelers. All these facilities are designed to ensure that patients receive the right treatment within the crucial 'golden hour.' The foundation stone of this trauma block was laid in 2019, but the COVID pandemic severely affected the construction process. Work slowed down for nearly two years, and deadlines had to be pushed multiple times. Now, the much-awaited project is complete. Built at a cost of ?42.65 crore, the centre is expected to become fully operational in the first quarter of the upcoming financial year. The inauguration is scheduled for July 28, and GMCH has already started the process of recruiting required faculty and paramedical staff so that services can begin smoothly. It is expected that the new centre will ease the burden on PGI and GMSH-16 and provide better care to emergency patients.

Woman ‘unleashes' dog on advocate who parked his car next to her house, booked

Chandigarh: A woman was Saturday booked for allegedly letting her dog out on a man, an advocate of Punjab and Haryana HC, for parking his car next to her house in Sector 21. The dog badly bit the man, who had to be admitted to hospital. No arrests have been made in the case so far. The victim, Kartik Gandhi, a resident of Mohali's Dera Bassi told police he has an office at house no. 221 in Sector 21 here. On Friday, he went there in his car and parked the vehicle near house no. 230, which is close to his office. He said when the owner of house no. 230 saw him, she unleashed her pet dog, which was chained until then, on him. The dog, most likely a German Shepherd, attacked both him and his friend. Though the friend somehow managed to run away, the dog pounced on Kartik and bit his left wrist. When he screamed for help, the dog bit him again on his left ankle and then on his right hip. Shot fired amid clash at Chandigarh nightclub, four held

A youth opened fire with a pistol during an altercation with a nightclub's staff in Sector 26 in the wee hours of Thursday. Narender Pratap Jha, manager of Sante Club, lodged a police complaint, narrating that they were closing the club around 2.30 am on Thursday. Club staff, including Rakesh Kumar, were requesting patrons to vacate the premises when four young men became aggressive over being asked to leave. The accused, identified as Salman, 26, Wasim, 19, Shahrukh, 24, and Shahdab, 24, all residents of Pinjore, Haryana, engaged in heated arguments with the staff that soon escalated into a violent confrontation. As per the complainant, one of the accused ran outside and instructed Salman to bring a pistol from the car. Salman returned with a firearm retrieved from a parked black Hyundai Venue. According to Narender, Shahrukh took the pistol and aimed it at him, while the others provoked him to shoot. As Shahrukh fired a shot, it missed the target. The gathered crowd quickly overpowered the accused and disarmed them. The four were thrashed by the public and detained on the spot. As a police team arrived, they were handed over with the illegal pistol and magazine. They were taken to the Sector 26 police station, where they failed to produce any licence for the weapon. Subsequently, an FIR was registered under the Arms Act and attempt to murder charges, among others. Besides Narender, two other staff members, Tarun and Raja, sustained injuries during the scuffle. During medical examination, Shahrukh was also found to have sustained injuries to his left hand, apparently due to the public beating, and was treated at GMSH-16, Chandigarh.
