Is GPT-5 free? Here's how many messages you can send on ChatGPT's free, Plus, and Pro plans
OpenAI announced its latest GPT-5 language model during a live-streaming event on Thursday with the promise of a number of improvements across various areas such as reasoning, accuracy, writing, coding, health-related questions, and multi-modal abilities. However, OpenAI went against its history of reserving the latest model for paying users by also releasing GPT-5 simultaneously to free-tier users. That being said, free users no longer have access to OpenAI's GPT-4o or other older models that they had been using for months. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise users can still access GPT-4o by turning on the legacy settings on ChatGPT. If you have already gotten access to GPT-5, there is a chance that you may have hit the limit for the new model and already been downgraded to a lower model (if in free or Plus category). Let's find out what the message limits are for OpenAI's paying and non-paying users. ChatGPT's non-paying members are restricted to sending just 10 messages every hour for the standard model and one message per day to the GPT-5 Thinking model. After hitting the GPT-5 limit, free users will automatically use the mini version of both models for their queries. ChatGPT Plus users were given access to 80 messages per 3 hours with the GPT-5 standard model at launch, but this limit has now been temporarily doubled to 160 messages per 3 hours. Meanwhile, they have access to 200 messages per week with the Thinking model. Upon reaching their limit, Plus users will also have to interact with the mini model. The ChatGPT Plus subscription costs $20/month, and along with a higher message limit, they also get a larger 32,000-token context window compared to the 8,000-token context window for free users. Plus users can also select the GPT-5 Thinking model directly from the model picker. ChatGPT Pro and Team users have unlimited access to GPT-5 Standard, Thinking, and GPT-5 Pro models, subject to abuse guardrails. The Pro subscription for ChatGPT costs $200/month, while the Team subscription costs $25 per user/month. Unlike the previous versions, GPT-5 has an automatic router that has been programmed by OpenAI to switch between the Thinking and Standard models based on the complexity, conversation type, tool required, and intent of the user. Users can also trigger this mechanism by adding keywords like 'think hard about this' in their prompts.

Businesses must pay more: OpenAI's new GPT-5 era marks subscription evolution
OpenAI's Plus subscription, priced at $20 per month or ₹1,999 per month in India, has undergone significant changes ushering in the new GPT-5 dominated landscape. It is now considerably watered down for subscribers, with theoretical usage limits and access to only the latest models now. A case of lost sheen? Undoubtedly, OpenAI's Plus subscription represented a best-value tier for AI users, and remained versatile enough for some level of professional usage too. Now however, the pricier Pro subscription (that's $200 per month, or ₹19,900 in India) becomes more valuable, which makes business sense at a time when OpenAI is talking about PhD-level intelligence and agentic AI capabilities. OpenAI's Plus subscription represented a best-value tier for AI users. (Official photo) The first change that Plus subscribers will notice is that only three models are listed, of which two are accessible — GPT-5 flagship model for most queries, GPT-5 Thinking for more detailed responses, while GPT-5 Pro remains exclusive to Pro subscribers. Previously, a much wider range of the then latest gen as well a generation older models were available for Plus subscribers. Before the switch a few hours ago, HT noted GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, o4-mini-high, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1-mini available — among this, GPT-4o was the default model. Access to these models is gone, for now, for Plus users. If you want that, pay for the Pro subscription. Also Read: AI now sits atop of the food chain, and domain knowledge is key: Nitin Seth 'As with GPT-4o, the difference between free and paid access to GPT-5 is usage volume. Pro subscribers get unlimited access to GPT-5, and access to GPT-5 Pro. Plus users can use it comfortably as their default model for everyday questions, with significantly higher usage than free users. Team, Enterprise, and Edu customers can also use GPT-5 comfortably as their default model for everyday work, with generous limits that make it easy for entire organisations to rely on GPT-5,' the company details, in an official statement. Secondly, the usage limits for Plus subscribers, across GPT-5 and GPT-5 Thinking models, are now listed as 'Expanded'. This isn't a hard-cap, which is why I don't have a specific number to share with you, but dynamic based on a number of factors. OpenAI explains that Plus subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand, and these limits may vary based on system conditions. Also Read: Fidji Simo, OpenAI's new CEO, insists AI can put power in the hands of people At the time of the GPT-4o release a few months earlier, OpenAI had noted, 'We are making GPT‑4o available in the free tier, and to Plus users with up to 5x higher message limits'. Business case, enterprise pricing From OpenAI's perspective, these subscription changes represent a sophisticated revenue optimisation strategy that does well to recognise a significant disparity in usage and therefore value derived, when comparing individual consumers and enterprise users. By restricting GPT-5 Pro access to the highest tier, OpenAI is essentially implementing enterprise software pricing principles where the most advanced capabilities — PhD-level reasoning and sophisticated agentic AI, which anyways are positioned as premium enterprise tools rather than consumer products. Businesses and organisations that wish to replace humans with AI agents, must pay more than a regular user. Companies, be it a consulting firm using GPT-5 Pro to analyse market trends, a biotech company leveraging its reasoning capabilities for drug discovery research, or a law firm utilising its advanced document analysis features, must find justifications for paying significantly more for AI access now. Also Read: Tech Tonic: God complex is why AI chiefs can't see the humans they'll displace The 128K context window (it's a 32k window on Plus subscriptions) is crucial for enterprises processing lengthy contracts, research papers, or technical documentation. At the same time, unlimited access limits should be idea for workplace workflows, which would do well without encountering dynamic usage caps. Token pricing for API, or the application programming interface, too have been slightly tweaked. For instance, GPT-5 for 1 million output tokens costs $10, while the cost with GPT-4.1 was $12 for the same. By nudging enterprises toward Pro subscriptions, OpenAI is attempting to make a clear distinction between consumer-esque pricing as well as something akin to an enterprise software licensing approach. This strategy also creates a natural and useful customer segmentation, where casual and semi-professional users remain on Plus with 'expanded' access limits (ideally, many users may never hit these dynamic limits), while businesses that require AI as a core operational tool must invest more for Pro subscriptions. Yet, there are often two sides to any coin. From a consumer perspective, the GPT Plus subscription no longer unlocks access to OpenAI's best model at this time, but a hint of it. This is in stark contrast to the $20 per month outlay for consumers that essentially unlocked the best of AI capability that was on offer. Not to forget, ambiguous (a nicer word is dynamic) limits of usage, before you'll be sent to the back of the queue. It is clear and understandable that OpenAI is giving its subscription tiers more meaning and differentiation. But as the contrast currently stands, a Plus plan seems to be leaning more towards something that risks being classified as 'freemium' — attractive in theory, but limited in practice.

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, calling it the smartest and most capable version of its artificial intelligence models to date. The company says the new model is more accurate, more efficient, and has significantly lower hallucination rates compared to previous to X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted: 'GPT-5 is the smartest model we've ever done, but the main thing we pushed for is real-world utility and mass accessibility/affordability.'GPT-5 is now being gradually rolled out to ChatGPT Plus , Pro users, and Team plans across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. It will soon be available to Enterprise and Education plan users as using ChatGPT can access GPT-5. If you're on a paid plan (Plus, Pro, or Team), you can also use the model picker to switch between the regular GPT-5 model and GPT-5 on the Pro and Team tiers get access to GPT-5 Thinking Pro, which takes a little longer to respond but offers more accurate results for complex users can send up to 10 messages every 5 hours, after which ChatGPT switches to a smaller version of the model until the limit resets. Free users can also send one GPT-5 Thinking message per users have a higher limit of 80 messages every 3 hours. Thereafter, their conversations also default to a lighter version of GPT-5. They can use GPT-5 Thinking up to 200 times per week. Once this limit is reached, GPT-5 Thinking disappears from the picker, although automatic switches by the system won't count toward this and Team subscribers enjoy unlimited access to GPT-5 models, with appropriate safeguards in place to prevent misuse, according to the introduces a more intelligent system that simplifies how the model works behind the scenes. Instead of users needing to choose between versions such as Turbo or Standard, the system now automatically selects the best fit based on the task. There's a fast, general-purpose model for everyday queries, and GPT-5 Thinking for more advanced reasoning. A built-in router decides which to use based on the complexity of the conversation and your usage limits are hit, a mini version takes over, ensuring a smooth experience even when you've reached your cap. In the future, OpenAI plans to combine all of these capabilities into a single seamless model.A major new feature is the ability to connect ChatGPT to Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts. OpenAI says GPT-5 is a major upgrade and a step towards AGI: What's new
US-based artificial intelligence startup OpenAI has released its new flagship AI model, GPT-5. The model is now rolling out globally to ChatGPT for all users, both paid and free, and brings notable improvements and new capabilities. GPT-5 enhances the AI's ability to write, code, and hold conversations, while also unifying several model pathways into one intelligent system — one that, according to OpenAI, marks a step closer to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). OpenAI GPT-5: What is new OpenAI described GPT-5 as the company's best 'AI system' yet. It said that it brings state-of-the-art performance across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and more. The model better understands context and adapts its response strategy accordingly — offering faster answers when possible, or taking time for deeper, more thoughtful responses when needed. The company claimed GPT-5 outperforms previous versions not just in benchmarks but also in handling real-world prompts. It reportedly follows instructions more closely and reduces hallucinations compared to earlier models. OpenAI GPT-5: Availability OpenAI said that GPT-5 is slowly rolling out to all users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Free plans worldwide across web, mobile, and desktop. It will also be available to ChatGPT Enterprise and Education subscribers soon. GPT-5 in ChatGPT: What's new Unified system: GPT-5 simplifies the ChatGPT experience into a single auto-switching model that integrates capabilities of previous versions. This unified system includes a deeper reasoning engine — GPT-5 Thinking — and a real-time router that picks between fast or in-depth responses based on the conversation. Users on paid tiers can still manually choose GPT-5 or GPT-5 Thinking via the model picker. Pro and Team subscribers also get access to GPT-5 Thinking Pro, which takes a bit longer but delivers greater accuracy for complex tasks. GPT-5 also becomes the new default model for all logged-in users, replacing several older versions, including: GPT-4o GPT-4.1 GPT-4.5 GPT-4.1-mini o4-mini o4-mini-high o3 o3-pro When a user opens a conversation that previously used one of these models, ChatGPT will automatically shift it to the closest GPT-5 equivalent. For instance, chats with 4o or 4.1 will now open in GPT-5; chats with o3 will switch to GPT-5 Thinking, and o3-pro will map to GPT-5-Pro (exclusive to Pro and Team users). Improved performance: OpenAI said that GPT-5 improves the performance of ChatGPT across its most common use cases: writing, coding, and health. In coding tasks, OpenAI said the model is better at designing and building websites, games, and apps with visually appealing layouts using just a single prompt. It has an improved grasp of elements like spacing, white space, and typography. In writing, GPT-5 is said to handle complex forms more effectively — including unrhymed iambic pentameter and free verse — balancing structure with expressive clarity. For health-related queries, GPT-5 is positioned as the most reliable yet. OpenAI claims it behaves more like a thoughtful partner, asking follow-up questions and flagging concerns to offer more useful and nuanced responses. Personalities: With GPT-5, users have access to four new optional ChatGPT personalities in addition to the default. OpenAI describes these personalities as: Cynic: Sarcastic and wry, delivers blunt help with wit. Often teases, but provides direct, practical answers when it matters. Robot: Precise, efficient, and emotionless, delivering direct answers without extra words. Listener: Warm and laid-back, reflecting users thoughts back with calm clarity and light wit. Nerd: Playful and curious, explaining concepts clearly while celebrating knowledge and discovery. Updated ChatGPT Voice: Voice mode in ChatGPT now works with custom GPTs, and usage limits have been lifted for Plus users and expanded for free-tier users. Additionally, paid users can now give speaking instructions — allowing Voice mode to adapt its pace, tone, and length of response dynamically.

OpenAI accused of showing misleading charts during GPT-5 launch, Sam Altman calls it ‘mega screwup'
OpenAI's new GPT-5 model was released during a live-stream on Thursday where the company showed off many comparisons in order to certify the new model's enhanced capabilities compared to the competition and its older models. However, during the event, the company went on to show off many charts that were simply untrue and had to lead to an apology from an OpenAI staffer. In one of the charts presented during the live-stream, it shows GPT-5 supposed prowress compared to OpenAI's o3 in different parameters. In of the parameters called 'coding deception', GPT-5 ges a 50 percent deception rate compared to o3's 47.4 score, a pretty close call statistically speaking but the graph shows almost the opposite. In stead of showing a higher bar for GPT-5, OpenAI showed off o3 with a much bigger bar. The company went on to correct the mistake in a subsequent blogpost but the deception rate for GPT-5 there is certified as 16.5 percent. As if that wasn't enough, another chart from the live-stream comparing GPT-5 to o3 and GPT-4o shows the new model with a score of 74.9 compared to 69.1 and 30.8 for the other two models respectively. While o3 and GPT-4o have a vast difference in scores, the chart shows them with almost the same length bar compared to a bigger bar for GPT-5. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented on the wrong charts shows during the live-stream, calling it a 'mega chart screwup' while stating that a correct version of the charts have been uploaded on OpenAI's blog post. Meanwhile, an OpenAI marketing staff also apologized for the error in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing, 'We fixed the chart in the blog guys, apologies for the unintentional chart crime 🙏' OpenAI says GPT-5 comes with major improvements in areas like accuracy, speed, reasoning, context recognition, structured thinking, and problem-solving compared to the company's GPT-4o model. The biggest change with GPT-5 is the introduction of a unified system with an 'efficient model' powering GPT-5's normal tasks while a dedicated reasoning model called GPT-5 Thinking handling harder reasoning based tasks. Unlike in the past, where users had to choose the model for each query, GPT-5 features a real-time router trained on real signals to instantly decide which model to use. The new model comes with major improvements in coding related tasks and also possesses the ability to create apps, games and websites using natural language prompts. There is also claimed to be a marked improvement in writing and health related tasks.
