10k subsidised coconuts fly off horticulture corp's counters

Whether it's grated into sabzis, added to chutneys, or used as oil, coconut is a good choice for thyroid health. It gives healthy fats that help with hormone function and boost energy. Virgin coconut oil, especially, may help improve metabolism and reduce tiredness, which are common in an underactive thyroid. It also fights inflammation and is easy to digest, making it a gentle fat for daily use. Panaji: On Independence Day, coconut consumers experienced a form of liberation from soaring prices in Goa. Shoppers across the state queued up for a rare bargain as the Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) rolled out a special sale of jumbo-sized coconuts at just Rs 40 apiece, a drop from the usual retail rate of Rs 58-60 per nut. The response was nothing short of enthusiastic. On the very first day of the sale, 10,000 coconuts flew off the counters. 'We are expecting this stock to get over by Sunday,' said GSHCL managing director Chandrahas Desai, as customers happily carted the coconuts home. One smiling buyer summed up the mood by saying, 'It has been a long time since I could buy coconuts without wincing at the price. With Ganesh Chaturthi fast approaching, this solution was a must.' TOI had reported that the corporation procured 25,000 coconuts to launch the initiative, all sourced from Shivamogga, Karnataka. With brisk sales showing no signs of slowing, a fresh batch of another 25,000 coconuts is due to arrive on Monday to meet the demand. The GSHCL earlier announced that it would be sourcing 15 tonnes of coconuts from Shivamogga to help meet the state's festive requirements. The supply drive is set to continue well past the Aug rush. 'We will be procuring at least 25,000 coconuts weekly until the eleventh day when Ganesh Chaturthi concludes,' Desai said. South Goa leads state's vegetable boom

Margao: South Goa has emerged as the key driver of the state's vegetable output. Govt data reveals a striking disparity in agricultural output between the two districts, with South Goa producing 1,427 metric tonnes (MT) of vegetables in 2024-25, nearly seven times North Goa's 192MT. With South Goa dominating in the agriculture sector, cucumber production reached 459MT in South Goa, while North Goa managed just 12MT. Similarly, bhendi (okra) production stood at 411MT in South Goa as against 117MT in North Goa. Of the total 208MT of vegetables exported through the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL), South Goa contributed 206MT, with cluster beans (87.5MT), bhendi (73.1MT), and cucumber (31.1MT) leading the export charts. The state directorate of agriculture reported that 80–85% of agricultural land is now mechanised, aided by subsidised tractors, tillers, transplanters, harvesters, and other modern tools. Govt's roadmap for the next decade is to expand the farm power to cultivable area ratio up to 2KW per hectare through advanced machinery suited for Goa's terrain and small landholdings. The focus areas will include setting up custom hiring centres in all talukas, boosting farmer training, and integrating precision farming technologies. In 2024-25, 1,192 farmers received assistance of Rs 81 lakh under the 'Promotion of Organic Farming 2018' scheme for purchasing organic inputs, and four farmers received Rs 22,000 for vermicompost units. Horticulture outlets will offer subsidised coconuts from today

Panaji: The Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) will sell 25,000 coconuts at a subsidised rate of Rs 40 each from Friday. The coconuts will be available through 1,250 horticultural outlets spread across the state, said the corporation's chairman, Premendra Shet. TOI had earlier reported that the GSHCL is procuring 15 tonnes of coconuts from Shivamogga, Karnataka, to meet the festive demand. This supply is expected to continue through the first week of Sep, covering the entire festive period of Ganesh Chaturthi. 'We will be procuring at least 25,000 coconuts weekly until the eleventh day when Ganesh Chaturthi concludes,' said GSHCL managing director Chandrahas Desai. The move comes as market prices for coconuts have increased, with regular coconuts currently selling between Rs 37 and Rs 40 each, and larger-sized ones costing Rs 58-60 per nut. By offering coconuts at Rs 40, the GSHCL aims to provide relief to consumers and help meet the increased demand during the festive season. Chaturthi demand: Goa set to buy 15 tonnes of coconuts from K'taka

Panaji: To meet the festive season's demand amid a coconut crop shortfall, the Goa State Horticultural Corporation (GSHCL) is set to procure 15 tonnes of coconuts from Shivamogga, Karnataka, this month. The supply, which is expected to last through the first week of Sep, will be sold at subsidised rates. 'We will be procuring at least 25,000 coconuts at a time every week till the eleventh day of Ganesh Chaturthi culminates. The first consignment from Karnataka is expected to be supplied by Friday,' said GSHCL managing director Chandrahas Desai. The GSHCL has procurement centres in each taluka in Goa, where these coconuts will be supplied. Following this, they will trickle down to individual horticulture outlets across the state. The market price of coconuts is currently ranging from Rs 40-45 per piece, while the larger-sized coconuts are even selling at Rs 50-60 per piece. Desai pointed to the delay in local harvests as the reason for the shortage of coconuts in the state currently. 'The trees tend to be slippery in July-Aug, due to which 'paadekar' (pluckers) avoid plucking in these months,' Desai said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo 'Coconut plucking will be taken up in full swing only after Ganesh Chaturthi ends in Sep. We can therefore expect the prices of the staple to stabilise by then.' TOI had reported that the coconut industry is facing a setback, with production falling by 6.2% and productivity per hectare declining by 6.4%. In his reply to a question at the recently concluded monsoon assembly session, minister for agriculture, Ravi Naik, said that many coconut plantations consist of senile palms, which contributed to reduced yields. Additionally, coconut farms are often neglected due to labour shortages and the high cost of fertilisers, he said. In 2022-23, Goa recorded a coconut production of 163.1 million nuts with an average productivity of 6,113 nuts per hectare. In 2023-24, coconut production in Goa declined to 160.9 million nuts with an average productivity of 6,006 nuts per hectare, followed by a further drop in 2024-25 to 150.8 million nuts and a productivity of 5,625 nuts per hectare. Desai pointed to the problem of rhesus macaque monkeys destroying crops in coconut plantations, leading to poor harvests. He said that in case there is further delay in coconut plucking this season, the GSHCL will continue to procure more coconuts from Karnataka even after Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. 'We will ensure that the prices are stabilised,' Desai said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Onion, potato highest imported vegetables in Goa in 2024-25

Panaji: In the fiscal year 2024–25, onion and potato topped the list of vegetables imported into Goa, with over 13,471.5 tonnes of onion and 12,179 tonnes of potato brought in from other states, revealed the data shared by the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Ltd (GSHCL) at the ongoing state assembly session. 'The gap between the quantity of local vegetables procured and the vegetables imported by GSHCL is 20,639 metric tonnes,' said agriculture minister Ravi Naik in his reply to an LAQ tabled by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Lourenco. Vegetables are mainly sourced from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), with Karnataka and Maharashtra serving as the primary supplier states. Goa imports a total of 49 types of vegetables and greens from these states. The data also reveal the variety and volume of vegetables imported by GSHCL. Smaller quantities of vegetables such as brinjal, cucumber, drumstick, and garlic variants were imported in lesser amounts. Some items, such as garlic (medium and large) recorded zero imports in 2024–25, while herbs like curry leaves and mint (pudina) were brought in modestly. Despite the heavy reliance on imports, the agriculture minister emphasised that Goa continues to cultivate a variety of vegetables locally. It will serve as a platform for rapid technology transfer, enabling farmers to increase their yield and potentially export vegetables,' Naik stated.
