New Porsche 911 Speedster promises thrills as it keeps its GT3 heart

A brand-new version of the Porsche 911 Speedster has been spied testing with a collection of elements that give away its identity. We expect that it'll be the brand's latest Heritage Design special edition, arriving some time later this year or early next. It's not often that Porsche pairs one of its high-revving GT3 engines with a convertible bodystyle, but every generation or so it does just that with this limited-run and highly sought-after model. The first element that gives away the new Speedster's identity is the rear bumper, which features the same centrally mounted twin pipes as the GT3. This suggests that under the unique engine cover is a 4.0-litre flat-six engine that's naturally aspirated and connected to either a seven-speed dual-clutch or six-speed manual transmission. These gearboxes are also unique to the GT3 models and its derivatives. The front wings and their air-foils ahead of the front wheels are borrowed from the 911 ST, and like the bonnet are made of lightweight carbon fibre. The ultra-geeky will also note the traditional pull-style handles, which suggest the doors are also from the 911 S/T. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The windscreen and folding fabric roof look to be the same as those fitted on regular 911s, instead of the lowered-windscreen arrangement found on previous Speedsters. This is due to tough crash-safety regulations in the USA, and the costs associated with developing a new folding roof mechanism. Inside, we expect to see a collection of elements from the latest 992.2-generation GT3, including its unique carbon-fibre bucket seats and the latest digital interfaces – potentially with unique graphics in the same style as the green dial font on former Heritage Design models. As always with Porsche's Heritage Design cars, the Speedster will launch with a unique livery, plus a launch colour and trim package that might reference an iconic model from the past. The last Speedster, specifically of the 991.2 era, featured a Guards Red exterior colour, matching that of the original 930-generation Speedster alongside a more contemporary GT Silver option. These are rare cars, so while it might be tricky to find a Speedster, make sure you check out our other Porsche 911 listings through Auto Express Find a Car. The Speedster has never been an inexpensive 911, and we suspect it'll be the same this time around. A price well over £200,000 is expected, making it a good £50,000 more than the standard GT3. Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Concept teased with V8 power to take on the 911 GT3 RS

The Mercedes-AMG GT portfolio is extensive, featuring a broad range of powertrain options that offer everything from a turbocharged inline-four to a twin-turbo plug-in hybrid V8. But the 'GT family is not yet complete," the brand remarks as it teases the upcoming GT Track Sport. While this is currently labelled as a concept, we can expect a production version as AMG says it is giving us a 'preview of a possible expansion of the GT series with a V8 engine." Not much is known about the heavily camouflaged Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Concept, with the company describing it as an uncompromising concept vehicle that is 'designed for absolute driving dynamic peak performance to set new standards and record times." However, a road-going version is highly likely; the upcoming generation of AMG's GT3 race car must be homologated with a street-legal production model according to regulations. To this end, the new concept will, in all likelihood, birth a hardcore grand tourer to be slotted above the AMG GT 63 Pro in the company's lineup. Also Read : Mercedes-Benz car in mind? Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Concept: What we know so far The AMG GT Track Sport will rival the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and is likely to bring a 2-seater design (Mercedes-AMG) The GT Track Sport brings a new, distinctive front grille with a large front splitter underneath and a massive swan-neck rear wing fixed at the rear. Its racing credentials are apparent, with top-mounted fender vents and an air duct positioned next to the headlamp. The car appears to target the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (both on and off the track), and as such, is likely to ditch the usual 2+2 seating layout in favour of a much sportier 2-seater configuration. The street-legal version that we're hoping for may stick to the softer, coupe layout. There are no official details regarding its powertrain, but the GT Track Sport is confirmed to house a V8 engine under the hood. The current 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 within the AMG range makes between 476 bhp and 612 bhp for the non-hybrids. When combined with hybrid power in the GT 63 SE Performance, the output jumps to 816 bhp. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. First Published Date:

Here's a teaser of the sportscar that could become Mercedes' next GT3 model

Mercedes has released teaser images of a new sportscar that is set to be the base for its next-generation GT3 racer. What the German manufacturer is calling the Concept AMG GT Track Sport is described as an 'uncompromising concept vehicle' that has been 'designed for absolute driving dynamic peak performance to set new standards and record times'. It demonstrates Mercedes-AMG's 'great expertise as a sportscar manufacturer and provides a preview of a possible expansion of the GT series', the short statement accompanying camouflaged images of the concept car continued. No mention was made of racing or the GT3 category, but the statement revealed that the car 'offers an exclusive insight into the development workshop in Affalterbach'. That is a reference to the new Affalterbach Racing GmbH division established last year on the takeover of the HWA organisation that developed the previous two Mercedes GT3 contenders, the SLS and AMG respectively released to customers in 2011 and 2016. Mercedes announced the start of the new company last July at the same time as revealing that a successor to the AMG GT3 would be developed at its facilities to the north of Stuttgart. Mercedes AMG Concept AMG GT Track Sport The only technical detail of the concept car acknowledged by Mercedes is that it is powered by a V8 engine like the first two GT3 racers. The 6.2-litre normally-aspirated powerplant was carried over from the SLS to the AMG GT3 even though there was no such engine in the road car range of the latter machine. Mercedes appears to be developing what might be described as a racer for the road in order to remain in a category in which it has enjoyed considerable success, including a pair of victories in each of the 24-hour classics at Spa and the Nurburgring. A study of the C192 model GT, introduced in 2023 to replace the C190 on which the current Mercedes-AMG GT3 is based, determined the car's unsuitability for motorsport. It is a 2+2 rather than a two-seater like its predecessor. No timeline was mentioned in the Mercedes statement for a possible introduction of the car, though it suggested that a commencement of testing is imminent. It talked of the project being 'finalised' prior to the concept car 'proving itself on the test tracks'. The Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Is Coming With V-8 Power

Mercedes promised it would give us more V-8 cars , and sure enough, the GT Track Sport packs eight cylinders under the hood. What is it? It's currently billed as a concept, but a production version is likely, as AMG says it 'provides a preview of a possible expansion of the GT series.' Additionally, the folks from Affalterbach claim the 'GT family is not yet complete.' Although the concept has the word 'track' in its name, we're still holding out hope for a road-legal version. Mercedes-AMG's upcoming next-gen GT3 race car must be based on a street-legal production model to comply with regulations, necessitating a homologation special to bridge the gap between road and track. We're likely looking at a hardcore version positioned above the GT63 Pro in the car's already vast lineup, which also includes a four-cylinder GT43 base model . Photo by: Mercedes-Benz The spare wheel sitting next to the camouflaged prototype appears to be a meaty Michelin street tire, leading us to believe the GT Track Sport will get a license plate for public roads. Despite the camouflage plastered all over the car, it's hard to miss the swan-neck rear wing or the large front splitter. How much of the regular AMG GT is left remains unclear, but a track-focused derivative is likely to come strictly with a two-seat layout. AMG has been criticized for softening the second generation by adopting a 2+2 layout, effectively turning it into a coupe version of the SL . The Track Sport should restore some of the track cred, bringing the fight to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport 5 Source: Mercedes-Benz Affalterbach wants to 'set new standards and record times,' so a hot lap of the Nürburgring seems plausible. The old AMG GT Black Series conquered the Green Hell in 6 minutes and 48 seconds on the longer 20.8-kilometer (12.9-mile) configuration, claiming the production car record at the 'Ring back in 2020. However, a 911 GT2 RS with a Manthey Performance Kit dethroned it a year later with a 6:43.3 lap . Mercedes-AMG eventually got its revenge with the One hypercar, posting a blistering 6:29.09 . But the GT Track Sport is unlikely to beat that. A more realistic goal would be to surpass Porsche's pace. That potential new record may already be under threat, though, as a new 911 GT2 RS is on the way. Porsche Is Developing an Aggro 992.2-Generation 911 Cup Car

Porsche confirmed that it's developing an updated 911 Cup car based on the 992.2 version of the 911 GT3 road car. The updated race car will supplant the current 911 Cup car in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and several Carrera Cup series. Development of the new race car began in January 2024, with production set to start this fall ahead of a 2026 season debut. In road form, a Porsche flat-six screaming at 9000 rpm is an auditory experience akin to several shots of espresso. In race car form, a single Porsche flat-six reaching an 8750-rpm crescendo generates a reverberation that can be felt pounding throughout your chest. But what about an entire field of Porsche flat-sixes? That sows a thunder felt from head to toe. That tempest of 911 Cup cars is preparing for a change, as Porsche just confirmed that development for an updated 911 Cup Car based on the 992.2 generation of the 911 GT3 road car is underway. The new car would replace the current 992.1 Cup Cars that compete in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and several Carrera Cup series around the world. Porsche Exact changes to the new race car are not mentioned, with Porsche preferring to speak in generalities. The automaker says development has focused on improving aerodynamics at the front of the car, which should help with drivability. Porsche said it also made changes to the electronics, brakes, transmission, and engine. Porsche Porsche Development for the 992.2 version of the Cup car began in January 2024. Development began at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach, Germany, with testing days at the Monza Circuit and the Lausitzring in Brandenburg, Germany. Production of the new race car is scheduled to start this fall, with the car making its debut for the 2026 racing season.
