Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé lands in South Africa
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is now officially available in South Africa. Recently seen flexing its muscle at the 2025 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna — where it claimed class honours in the road and supercar category — this German bahn-stormer is driven by a 4.0l twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine producing 450kW and 850Nm, paired with a 150kW/320Nm electric motor. Combined, the powertrain delivers a staggering 600kW and 1,420Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission and fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ system. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0—100km/h sprint time of just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 320km/h. On the more sensible end of the spectrum, the GT 63 S E Performance also offers an electric-only range of up to 13km, thanks to its F1-derived 400V, 6.1kWh battery. Connected to a 3.7kW onboard charger, it can be recharged using a household socket, wall box or public charging station. Adding more clever tech into the mix is the AMG Dynamic Select system, offering eight driving modes: Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual. These can be selected via the AMG button and central display on the centre console or through the AMG steering wheel controls. Each mode tweaks the behaviour of the powertrain, gearbox, steering, damping, and exhaust note. Drivers can also toggle between four levels of energy recuperation — one of which allows for near 'one-pedal' driving. Other performance-focused features include active aerodynamic aids, such as a deployable rear spoiler and a concealed underbody flap that improve downforce at speed. AMG Active Ride Control with semiactive roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering further boost agility and stability across various driving conditions. Braking duties are handled by a ceramic high-performance composite system: six-piston fixed calipers and 420mm rotors up front, and single-piston floating calipers with 380mm discs at the rear. Wrapping these are 20" AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tyres (295/35 front and 305/35 rear), with forged 21" wheels available as an option. Inside, the GT 63 S E Performance is as luxurious as it is potent. Standard features include a fully digital instrument cluster, an 11.9" portrait-orientated touchscreen running the latest MBUX infotainment system, and exclusive AMG Performance and Track Pace apps for telemetry and lap-time logging. Occupants are treated to Nappa leather sports seats, carbon-fibre interior trim, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an ergonomic AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and active steering and lane-keeping assist. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is priced from R4,369,287, which includes a standard five-year/100,000km service and maintenance plan.

View 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance 4-Door Interior Photos
Read the full review The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance looks much the same as its nonhybrid predecessor, but it's got a few new tricks to show off. The buttons on the center console are arranged in a V, and there are eight of them. We suspect this is some kind of message. As the most powerful series production Mercedes ever, the GT63 S E Performance is available with some outrageous color options. Nappa leather will set you back at least $2160. If you'd like the AMG matte carbon-fiber trim, that's $2850. A Burmester sound system is standard, which is nice given that the E Performance's base price is $196,050. The AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather is also standard. Though this color is a personal choice. You can shift the nine-speed automatic with the paddle shifters, but the transmission does a great job picking gears all on its own. There are a lot a settings to customize—basic drive modes along with specifics like stability control, manual or automatic shifting, and exhaust sound. Scrolling through the settings is quite intuitive. In the car's more aggressive drive modes, the engine charges the battery as you drive. Hopefully you don't often need to use the Slippery setting in a car with 831 horsepower. Keep going to see more photos of the GT63 S E Performance. Two High-End Mercedes-AMG Models Totaled in Head-On Collision During Test Drive in India
Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A test drive in Kochi, India, turned disastrous when two powerful and expensive Mercedes-AMG models collided head-on, totaling both vehicles in an accident valued at over $600,000. The collision, which involved a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance and an SL 55, left the cars severely damaged and sent all involved to the hospital for treatment. The crash initially occurred two months ago but recently gained attention after images and reports resurfaced on social media. The sequence of events reportedly began when the driver of the bright orange GT 63 S E Performance lost control after hitting an elevated section of an old railway track. The GT 63 S then rear-ended a Hyundai Accent before swerving into the opposite lane and colliding with an SL 55 that was also being test-driven from the same dealership. According to Kaumudi Online, no fatalities were reported, and all parties received medical attention. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Carspotterkerala (@carspotter_kerala) Both luxury models were heavily impacted in the crash. The GT 63 S E Performance's front end suffered severe damage, with the driver's side wheel, brake, and suspension components ripped from the car, rendering it irreparable. The SL 55 also sustained major damage, particularly to the passenger side, where the front wheel, bonnet, and one headlight were destroyed. The passenger-side door was torn from the car in the collision, leaving it unrecognizable. The cost of high-performance Mercedes-AMG models in India far exceeds prices in other markets. The SL 55 is valued at approximately 24.4 million Indian Rupees (around $290,000), while the GT 63 S E Performance starts at 31 million Indian Rupees (roughly $368,000). Both vehicles will likely be sent to a scrapyard following this tragic incident, a harsh end to two powerful machines and a reminder of the risks associated with high-speed test drives on public roads. Mercedes-AMG's 4-Door GT 63 S PHEV Is Finally Coming to America
The folks over at Mercedes-AMG call the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door a coupe, but our eyes see four doors. We're willing to overlook that discrepancy, though, because the wait for Affalterbach's most powerful family-friendly version of the AMG GT sports car is finally over... after three and a half years. See, European consumers have had the plug-in hybrid V-8-powered beast available since the 2022 model year, but it's only as of calendar year 2025 that American buyers are finally receiving a shot at the car. The GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door — which is effectively a four-door equivalent of the GT 63 S E Performance coupe, even though its architecture is actually more closely related to the previous-generation E-Class — is a mouthful because of its powertrain: A 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 is paired to a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, making a total of 831 hp and 1032 lb-ft of torque. All this is then fed to all four wheels through a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing for a swift 0-60 mph run of a claimed 2.8 seconds. Prospective buyers will have to settle for being just shy of the 200-mph club, however, as the car's top speed is electronically limited to 197 mph. But what's more exciting than the specs is the way engineers in Affalterbach have managed to streamline the power delivery process, and it all starts at the rear axle. The twin-turbo V-8 alone makes its own 630 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.1 kWh battery and electric motor add 201 hp of their own to the mix. The e-motor is mounted at the rear axle, where it delivers power via an electrically shifted two-speed gearbox feeding an electronically limited slip differential, with the 196-pound battery mounted on top of the motor. Immediate torque is one plus of the setup, but AMG says that the ability to better manage traction and handling dynamics is a greater benefit. The usual benefits of an electric powertrain are present as well. All-electric driving is possible for brief periods up to a speed of 87 mph, but the real benefit comes from regenerative braking. AMG has set up the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door with four different energy recuperation modes. Level 0 is essentially a coasting mode, while Level 1 and Level 2 gradually increase the level of regen, and Level 3 is close to one-pedal driving. There's no shortage of drive modes available, either — seven, in fact (Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, RACE, and Slippery), each of which brings changes to the throttle mapping, suspension tuning, and steering weight. The system is adjusted through a knob on the steering wheel and can be switched into a momentary boost mode, applying full power for 10 seconds when requested. These modes are paired with four settings (Basic, Advanced, Pro, Master) of AMG's Dynamics program, which adjusts parameters like yaw damping and stability control. AMG's Ride Control + suspension system is one link between all these tunable metrics. At its core, the system is based on a multi-chamber air suspension that can automatically level the ride height of the GT 63 S ; but it's the adaptive, electronically adjustable dampers that catch our eye. Thanks to dual pressure relief valves, the system operates with one valve controlling rebound and the other overseeing compression independently from each other. The combination of an air suspension and these high-dollar dampers delivers a suspension setup with a multitude of personalities, making the car both a cushy family cruiser and a track-ready beast. All of these specifications are exciting news, especially in a package that functions as an everyday ride... but they aren't all that new. Mercedes-AMG originally promised the U.S. market this model by the 2023 model year, so its 2025 arrival is a few years late — and in that time, Porsche has brought out a new plug-in hybrid Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and BMW has rolled out its new PHEV M5, both of which battle on the GT 63 S E Performance's turf. Then again, neither of those makes more than 800 hp and over 1000 lb-ft of torque.
