Mercedes-AMG's 4-Door GT 63 S PHEV Is Finally Coming to America

Yahoo04-02-2025

The folks over at Mercedes-AMG call the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door a coupe, but our eyes see four doors. We're willing to overlook that discrepancy, though, because the wait for Affalterbach's most powerful family-friendly version of the AMG GT sports car is finally over... after three and a half years. See, European consumers have had the plug-in hybrid V-8-powered beast available since the 2022 model year, but it's only as of calendar year 2025 that American buyers are finally receiving a shot at the car.
The GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door — which is effectively a four-door equivalent of the GT 63 S E Performance coupe, even though its architecture is actually more closely related to the previous-generation E-Class — is a mouthful because of its powertrain: A 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 is paired to a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, making a total of 831 hp and 1032 lb-ft of torque. All this is then fed to all four wheels through a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing for a swift 0-60 mph run of a claimed 2.8 seconds.
Prospective buyers will have to settle for being just shy of the 200-mph club, however, as the car's top speed is electronically limited to 197 mph. But what's more exciting than the specs is the way engineers in Affalterbach have managed to streamline the power delivery process, and it all starts at the rear axle.
The twin-turbo V-8 alone makes its own 630 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.1 kWh battery and electric motor add 201 hp of their own to the mix. The e-motor is mounted at the rear axle, where it delivers power via an electrically shifted two-speed gearbox feeding an electronically limited slip differential, with the 196-pound battery mounted on top of the motor. Immediate torque is one plus of the setup, but AMG says that the ability to better manage traction and handling dynamics is a greater benefit.
The usual benefits of an electric powertrain are present as well. All-electric driving is possible for brief periods up to a speed of 87 mph, but the real benefit comes from regenerative braking. AMG has set up the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door with four different energy recuperation modes. Level 0 is essentially a coasting mode, while Level 1 and Level 2 gradually increase the level of regen, and Level 3 is close to one-pedal driving.
There's no shortage of drive modes available, either — seven, in fact (Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, RACE, and Slippery), each of which brings changes to the throttle mapping, suspension tuning, and steering weight. The system is adjusted through a knob on the steering wheel and can be switched into a momentary boost mode, applying full power for 10 seconds when requested. These modes are paired with four settings (Basic, Advanced, Pro, Master) of AMG's Dynamics program, which adjusts parameters like yaw damping and stability control.
AMG's Ride Control + suspension system is one link between all these tunable metrics. At its core, the system is based on a multi-chamber air suspension that can automatically level the ride height of the GT 63 S ; but it's the adaptive, electronically adjustable dampers that catch our eye. Thanks to dual pressure relief valves, the system operates with one valve controlling rebound and the other overseeing compression independently from each other. The combination of an air suspension and these high-dollar dampers delivers a suspension setup with a multitude of personalities, making the car both a cushy family cruiser and a track-ready beast.
All of these specifications are exciting news, especially in a package that functions as an everyday ride... but they aren't all that new. Mercedes-AMG originally promised the U.S. market this model by the 2023 model year, so its 2025 arrival is a few years late — and in that time, Porsche has brought out a new plug-in hybrid Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and BMW has rolled out its new PHEV M5, both of which battle on the GT 63 S E Performance's turf. Then again, neither of those makes more than 800 hp and over 1000 lb-ft of torque.

Ford's Hot Hatch Is Now Officially History

The end is here for Ford's last hot hatch as the company confirmed to Motor1 that every factory build slot for the Focus ST is spoken for. "All Focus ST factory orders until the end of production have now been reserved," European communications manager Finn Thomasen said. Dealers across the Continent may still have a few unclaimed cars hiding in back lots, but once those are gone-and when Focus production stops in November-the book will officially close on Ford's 45-year hot-hatch chapter. The Focus joins a growing list of Ford passenger cars already in the rear-view mirror. The Fiesta bowed out in 2023, the Mondeo in 2022, and the tiny Ka back in 2020. Without them, Ford's European portfolio is dominated by crossovers such as the Puma and Kuga. The shift has taken a bite out of sales: through April, Ford moved 149,601 vehicles in the EU, U.K., and EFTA markets-down 2.2% year-over-year and less than a third of Volkswagen's haul over the same period. Even Hyundai and Kia have pulled ahead, underscoring how much ground Ford has ceded without its affordable hatchbacks. Yes, the seventh-generation Mustang still flies the performance flag, but it's hardly a volume play. EU taxes punish engines bigger than two liters, dogging the 5.0-liter V-8, while the smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost was pulled from European order books at the end of 2020. The pony car, therefore, lives on as a niche halo, not a substitute for the daily-drivable, budget-friendly thrills once delivered by ST-badged Fiestas and Focuses. Whether Ford ever revisits the hot-hatch formula likely depends on batteries, not boost pressure. Former Ford of Europe boss-now VW sales chief-Martin Sanders has hinted that the Blue Oval could tap further into Volkswagen's MEB electric platform, the foundation for the forthcoming Explorer and Capri EVs. VW has already promised an electric GTI; a battery-fueled Fiesta ST or Focus ST revival isn't unthinkable if the economics line up. For now, though, enthusiasts must look to the used market or pivot to rival brands still flying the internal-combustion hot-hatch flag. The Fiesta Supersport of 1980 lit the fuse; the Escort RS, Fiesta XR2, and decades of ST variants kept the fire roaring. With the Focus ST's curtain call, the combustion-powered Ford hot hatch becomes history. What replaces it, if anything, will almost certainly hum rather than howl. Until that day arrives, the faithful will remember the glory years and, if they're lucky, snag one of the last STs before they're gone. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Ryan Blaney Breaks Silence on Cadillac F1 Rumor With Just One Word

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A post on X from a parody account wrongly claimed that the Cadillac F1 team has reached out to NASCAR's Team Penske to have driver Ryan Blaney test their Formula One car. It also stated that Blaney would be eligible to receive a Super Licence to race in F1 if he finished 2nd this year. Blaney has responded with just a single three-letter word. Cadillac's F1 team has been gearing up for its premier class debut next year as the sport's eleventh team. The car is being developed in full swing to ensure it is competitive from the first year. Set to be the second American team on the grid, Cadillac joins at a crucial time as F1 enters a new era of regulations in 2026, where cars will be powered by an equal ratio of electric power to internal combustion through sustainable fuels. This is being done to comply with the sport's goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. Ryan Blaney, driver of the #12 Menards/Cardell Cabinetry Ford, poses with the winner sticker on his car in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01,... Ryan Blaney, driver of the #12 Menards/Cardell Cabinetry Ford, poses with the winner sticker on his car in victory lane after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on June 01, 2025 in Lebanon, Tennessee. MoreHowever, the big question Cadillac gets asked every time is about its driver lineup. While no name has been announced yet, Blaney being linked to the new F1 team for testing would certainly attract attention. Cadillac F1 team principal Graeme Lowdon confirmed in March that car components were being tested extensively and stressed that there was more work to be done. Newsweek Sports reported: "In terms of timeline for production, we're happy with where that stands. "We've been using a lot of time up to now doing a lot of testing and validation of individual components, things like testing of noses, squeeze testing of chassis elements and the like. "There's an awful lot of work that has gone on in the background. There's still a lot of work to do. "We're in a significantly better position now that we're now a fully-fledged F1 team. We will have access to all the data and information that all the other teams have." He added: "Now we can really push to come up with the most competitive car that we can. The team is already very sizeable, we're very comfortable about the position we're in, in terms of being ready to go racing in 2026." Blaney, however, has rejected the report of him testing for Cadillac. Commenting on the post on X, he said simply, "Nah." While many would have loved to witness a NASCAR-F1 crossover, it won't be happening this time.

3,600 pairs of new Maine license plates to be replaced after printing error

Jun. 6—The state will replace thousands of newly issued license plates after a printing error, the Department of the Secretary of State said. About 3,600 pairs of license plates were printed with the wrong amount of space between numbers and letters, office spokesperson Jana Spaulding said on a Friday evening phone call. She said the erroneous license plates were printed within the same time frame. "It could potentially cause an issue with E-ZPass and other things that do that character reading," she said. "Obviously an inconvenience, which is unfortunate, but was caught quickly." The new plates, which feature a pine tree reminiscent of the 1901 state flag, are being manufactured in Canada. They began replacing Maine's time-honored chickadee plates last month. The 3,600 drivers who were issued the faulty plates are being notified by letter. The office will mail impacted drivers replacement plates and sticker tags at no cost. They should arrive in August, though the timeline may change, the bureau said in its letter. In the meantime, drivers are asked to use the errant plates and notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of any issues related to scanning, Spaulding said. "It's a relatively minor, short-term error," she said, adding that the issue affected only "3,600 out of a few million" the agency intends to distribute this year. Those who receive replacement plates can return the faulty ones to the BMV or hold onto them as a keepsake, but they should not be used on a vehicle, Spaulding said. Copy the Story Link
