Amid Janmashtami celebrations, a 32-year-old person died on Saturday after he fell while rehearsing for a Dahi Handi event. The Shatabdi Hospital, Govandi, reported the accident at 3 pm. The victim, Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari, was a member of the group of Bal Govinda Pathak in Raigad Chawl, Maharashtra Nagar, Mankhurd. Another incident took place around 9 pm at Adarsh Nagar in Andheri. Rohan Valvi (14), a Govinda of Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, who was previously suffering from jaundice, was seated in a tempo and did not participate in Dahi Handi. However, he became unconscious and was taken to a private hospital and then to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead. These apart, several injuries to Govindas (human pyramid participants) were reported across the city. According to Chaudhari's family, he was tying the rope for the handi from the first floor of a residential building on the G+1 floor when he lost his balance and fell within the house. He was taken immediately to Shatabdi Hospital by relatives, where the doctors declared him brought dead. According to Trombay police, Chaudhari was declared dead at 12.35 pm. 'The deceased person was not a member of any Dahi Handi troupe or a Govinda. While helping children tie the Dahi Handi, he felt dizzy and collapsed inside the house gallery, where he died, ' a senior police official said. Family members confirmed that Chaudhari was within the grill of the building while securing the rope. Police and civic authorities stated necessary protocol was in process following the hospital report. Besides, there were reports of a number of injuries linked to the Dahi Handi festival in different parts of Mumbai throughout the day. According to officials from civic and government hospitals up to 6 pm, a total of 75 people got hurt while creating human pyramids. In Cooper Hospital and other central zone facilities (CT), 48 Govindas were admitted. Of the 48, nearly 27 were under treatment, 21 were discharged following medical treatment and one was described as serious. The seriously injured patient was 23-year-old Shreyas Chalke, who was shifted to G T Hospital. A total of 17 injuries were reported in the eastern zone. Thirteen of the injured patients were discharged after treatment, and four were still admitted. In the western zone, 10 Govindas were treated for their injuries. Nine were discharged, while one was still critical. The patient who was identified was nine-year-old Aryan Yadav and is being treated at BDBA Hospital in Kandivali. A total of 75 patients were injured up to 6 pm. Out of them, 43 were discharged, 32 were kept under treatment and two were critical. Every year, during Dahi Handi festival, hospitals in the city are put on alert to treat such cases. Civic authorities confirmed that no untoward incident, except the injuries reported and one casualty, had been reported until Saturday night.
