Greenville Utilities Commission wins APPA Safety Award
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The American Public Power Association (APPA) recently gave the Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) a major award. GUC was given the APPA Safety Award of Excellence for ensuring safe practices happen within their electrical services. Diamond level is the highest recognition that can be received from APPA and GUC earned it by only having two recordable injuries within 275,830 hours worked by 145 employees. Only one of those injuries resulted in a loss of work, totaling five days. 'Our employees have worked hard for many years now to build a safety culture where everyone is keeping an eye on one another and speak up if they see something unsafe,' said GUC Director of Electric John Worrell. 'It's very rewarding when national organizations such as APPA recognize those efforts, and it reinforces the fact that our safety programs are making a difference.' The GUC started using their Situational Leadership Model in 2022 to train their employees, leading to their seriousness of safety. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Geraldton Universities Centre's Class of 2025 includes 41 graduates who will return to the local workforce as skilled professionals and give back to the community. On April 15, the achievements of the graduating students were recognised at a formal ceremony at Queens Park Theatre, where they were surrounded by family, friends and the wider GUC community. Marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, this year's graduates studied a wide range of disciplines including accounting, arts, education, medical sonography, nursing, paramedic science, psychological science, and social work which were delivered in partnership with CQUniversity, UniSQ and Curtin University. CQUniversity vice-chancellor Professor Nick Klomp gave the keynote address at the graduation. 'The partnership between our two organisations has opened doors to high-quality education right here in this region and has helped produce a generation of skilled professionals who will now give back to this very community,' he said. A highlight of the ceremony was UniSQ Bachelor of Nursing graduate Nadine Barmentlo receiving the prestigious faculty medal for the faculty of health, engineering and sciences. The award is given to graduates who have demonstrated consistently high academic performance and exceptional critical thinking skills. This is the fifth time a GUC student had earned either a faculty or school medal. In another honour, four Aboriginal students — Shanae McGuire and Shanae Clohessy (primary education), Mariah Kara (psychology) and Nicole Wyatt (nursing) — wore special sashes in recognition of their achievements. Greenville Utilities Commission starting ‘Operation Spring Cleaning'
GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) — Starting Sunday, April 13, Greenville Utilities Commission is beginning, 'Operation Spring Cleaning'. This is their preventative maintenance program to make sure GUC customers continue to receive high-quality water. They say the full process to clean every area will take about eight weeks. Sections will be cleaned from Sunday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to minimize inconvenience for customers. The cleaning will be done in different areas, or zones, each week. 'We do our spring cleaning so that we can clean out the pipes. You get things accumulating on the inside of pipes throughout the year, a little bit of rust and some bacterial growth that is killed by the chemicals in the treatment process in the water that flows through, so they don't pose a danger. They just start to build up on the inside of the pipes so we clean them out, so you continue to get clean water,' said Steve Hawley, the Communications Manager at Greenville Utilities Commission. You can reach out to Greenville Utilities Commission if you have questions about this cleaning. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. GUC to start their, ‘Operation Spring Clean' program Sunday
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) will begin their annual, 'Operation Spring Clean' program soon. Starting April 13, GUC will work on cleaning about half of the 722 miles of water distribution lines to ensure that customers receive clean water. Some fire hydrants will be opened and allowed to flow freely for a short amount of time. Cleanings will happen from Sunday, April 13, to Friday, June 6, and will only be done from 10pm to 6am to mitigate inconvenience to customers. Different zones will be cleaned each week and customers will be called the Friday before and the day of cleaning for reminders. 'Water service will not be interrupted because of Operation Spring Clean; however, we advise customers to avoid using water (if possible) when their lines are being cleaned. Although there is no health risk, the cleaning process involves flushing the pipes with high velocities of water. As a result, water may be discolored for a short period of time. GUC advises customers to avoid washing clothes until the water is clear.' said David Springer, GUC's Director of Water Resources. If anyone experiences discolored water or other issues, GUC recommends that they run cold water for 5-10 minutes until it's clear. Customers can also call GUC at 252-551-1551 for more information about the Operation Spring Clean program or schedule. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
